user reviews of the Hootananny, Brixton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Had a pint of the house beer, Hootananny Pale Ale 3.6% for £3.00. Not sure what brewery made it. Large pub, between Brixton and Herne Hill train stations. Multicultural clientele which fits into the area quite nicely.

Went again recently and had another good time! Fun music. Good use of outside space. My G&T tasted a bit funny though.

this is one of the worst pubs i have been to stay away bands that you buy tickets for dont turn up and no offer of refund the owner of the place does not have a clue what she is doing and when you try to talk to her acts like a 5 year old little girl drinks are over priced and the whole pub is dirty with the bouncers having a part time job going around trying to sell there special cig

It was very lively when I visited on a Friday night. Needed to queue and get frisked by a bouncer before getting in and there were stalls outside selling food and drink. Combine this with the pub's spaciousness and the live music and it felt like being at a festival. Definitely worth a visit.

Speaking on behalf of many entertainers that have had the misfortune to agree to doing a gig here, this place is a nightmare. DONT DO IT! the promoters and the management are the most unprofessional, rude people you could ever have the misfortune to deal with. The running of the place is a shambles and sound engineers are a catastrophe... changing microphones and leads during songs, just terrible terrible gigs....In agreement with Haldir, its all about the money. I am surprised they have not been blacklisted by the musicians union, among other professional entertainment boards.

I live round the corner too - surprised by the negative comments on here.

Great music, cheap beer, shows all sport in the week- has a bit too much of an edge to it on some nights.

But Brixton would be far the worse without it.

I'd love to say that this is my favourite pub as I live around the corner from it. But frankly, it's a dive. These people don't give a flying f**k about anything but their profits.
The noise from Thursday through till Sunday night is a major annoyance to many locals. Despite many calls, complaints etc. it's pretty clear that the Hootenanny is just another carpetbagging bunch of exploitative gobshites who want to get rich on the "Brixton vibe" while treating the locals like shit.
I've lived here for 25 years and have seen the "Canning" through all its phases - this is the worst so far.

I'm surprised to read some of the comments made about this place. I have been heading to Hoots for about 6 months now and always find the place filled with a sweet crowd and some lovely staff. An extra bonus is that on the occasion where you get too pissed to work out a return journey home a hostel, ran by the pub, is short swagger upstairs.

I really liked this pub, especially the Thai food, the ambience, the outside area, and the general feeling of space, which you do not always get in pubs. Very nice indeed.

I stayed in the hostel. The people were very friendly and there was a party every night. The live music on Friday and Saturday was also fantastic.

advoid very poor customer service. website states when you book gigs bands come on 730 or 8pm yet truth is 11pm or later, i waas mis informed about this and was refused a refund in full and was promised website would show these times but weeks later they still dont.

Excellent pub. I say that as i'm Scottish and it's virtually the only pub in London that shows the Scotland football games.

Horrible! Head to Herne Hill for happiness in a glass!

mostly full of scummers, drug dealing still rife here and not a friendly gaff BUT in its defense it's always been like this and they hold some amazing last minute secret gigs...

I know it's stating the bl**ding obvious, but we have three reviews by three newcomers who have just logged on and commented on no other pubs. For how much did you sell your souls, boys ?? Surely more than a pint ??

This is quite simply the best pub in London. I go there all the time. Fantastic food and great value. And the saff are superb.
I love it.

I stumbled across this pub by accident and couldnt believe my luck.It has all you could ask for from a pub. pool tables, live music, giant screens, huge outdoor garden, nice people and good beer ... really good beer.
