please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Definately worth a visit just for the old-fashioned atmosphere in this large bar. A bit pricey of course, but if you just want an ordinary Jupiler go next door, it's the cheapest bar in Brussels and the barmaids are fun, "Touche pas!"
I thought I had left my mobile phone here, I hadn't but the staff turned the place upside down looking.

Visited on Saturday 16th Jan in a group with a fellow BITE reviewer.

Established in 1928 this pub is run by a fourth generation of the Vossen family who originally opened it, naming the venue after the card game Sudden Death often played in Mr Vossens previous drinking house.

A large building, it retains virtually all its original dcor. Tables are lined up in rows rather like an original Yates wine lodge or an old German beer hall. It is lit quite brightly at night, and there is no music, only boisterous conversation. Strong nicotine staining has been left on the ceiling and walls and a residual tobacco smell suggests the pub allowed smoking until only recently.

20 beers are offered; one or two of them unusual, and in addition a range of hot drinks is available including Oxo and heated wine assumed to be mulled wine but do check before ordering! Food here is mainly tapas, toasties, sandwiches and omelettes.

They have kept the old tradition of uniformed staff who, on our visit, provided us an efficient, surprisingly quick businesslike and pleasant service.

And a tip for a trouble free time at Mort Subite: Be sure to leave your glass on a beer mat when pausing between sips. I fell foul of this rule and the result was quite entertaining.

A must when in Brussels and a good introduction to the joys of Lambic - Yes it is filtered and sweetened but still a decent drink. If you want the real stuff you'll need to venture into the Payottenland or nip down to the Cantillon brewery in Anderlecht

The gueuze is not traditional

A bit shabby - overworked table staff who definitely needed a cuddle when I was visiting. La Mort Subite beers are well worth the wait though - food was acceptable as usual in Brussels. It's OK and worth a gawp but you do get kept waiting before being served.

Nice enough, loved the Faro and Kriek. Nice atmosphere though the one waiter who seemed to be working the whole cafe was initially rude later just took the p!ss. Didn't feel unwelcome though. Second the cheese comment, very nice.

Traditional Brussels bar. Relaxed and comfortable and reasonable priced.

The Geuze is second to none.

A must for any beer drinker
the gueze is garbage sweetend commercial and in no way authentic

Wonderful - if only visiting one bar in Brussels, this should be it! A long, narrow, high ceilinged bar of incredible charm and character. It grandly defies the smoking ban, and waiters keep customers waiting to the point of frustration before suddenly descending with attentive charm. The herb omelette is juicy and gorgeous, and the Mort Subite beer was first brewed for this very bar. The geuze is served at the perfect temperature, and the rare Blanche, which appears to only be available at this bar, is quite delightful. The cat in the basket by the toilet door adds to the overall charm.

For those who don't like caporal tobacco, the upstairs is smoke free.

A mixed clientelle - some locals, some tourists, some business people, some artists. It seems that everyone comes to Mort Subite.

The high ceilings and faded walls give this a relaxed air, like an old Parisian brasserie. Beer list is good, supposedly the origination of Mort Subite, a decent (in non-authentic Lambic). Well worth the stop.

This is a very famous bar, and deservedly so, but the downside of this is that it can be full of tourists. Nice beer, and nice little cubes of cheese to go with the beer.

This has to be seen to be believed. Its layout reminds you of a church. It is in fact a temple to Belgian beer and is not to be missed. Gave its name to the famous Mort Subite brand of beers. Go there. Mature staff; snacks served.
