Great, great food, still a pub by the skin of its teeth. Seemed to be a single beer (Branscombe Brewery) on tap.

But 8/10 as the food was superb and not silly money (starters £5-6, mains £10-15).

A marked improvement on my last vist, much better for both beer and food, and a nice crowd in what with blazing fires etc.
Check out the urinals; the shap of things to come? I've certainly never seen these before, impressed

Stayed here for a couple of nights in December & loved it, the food is to die for.
It was lovely & cosy despite the snow with 3 real fires & plenty of antiques & nooks & crannies etc.
I think there were 3 real ales on & they also seemed to have a great selection of bottled beers.
All in all a superb pub.
N.B We really enjoyed the Halfway house also (although completley different).

Gone down hill I'm afraid to say. very expensive food and the beer quality was poor. Two ales on gravity from stillages on the bar were both in poor condition and too warm.
I dont understand why owners of these gastro type pubs go on and on about the supurb quality of every ingedient on the menu but continue to serve ale in such poor condition.

Top quality pub, but a slightly disappointing range of real ales (2 on). Quite a few bottled beers, though. The food is excellent, but not by any means cheap, and the chips were possibly the best I have had in the south of England. The staff work very hard indeed and it was an excellent choice. Worth a special visit. 9/10

The last few reviewer's comments are pretty accurate - good hard working staff, good food and fairly swift service - even on a busy Friday night. Only 2 real ales. My only gripe is that, good as it is, it is vastly overpriced - 13 for fish and chips with a few fancy mushy peas and 13 for an 8-oz steak +3 for chips +3 for salad seems OTT to me.

Love this place! Best pub in the South for ticking so many boxes...friendly atmosphere, friendly locals, excellent food, good range of interesting drinks, lots of ale and cider, beautiful setting and building and fab accommodation. We visit every year and it just gets better each time. Packed when there is live music each Sunday in Summer, but they keep up with demand at the bar and are still smiling at the end of the night. The food is heavenly. My only complaint is I wish they would open another similar pub nearer to my area!

This pub is fantastic, we have now been then three times in last six months even though we live in South West London. The food is exceptional, the staff are very friendly and the whole place oozes old world charm.

Excellent. 1st class food, beer and service. Great wine list and menu and a wonderful pub. Well done.

Food was excellent and quite reasonable. I seldom ever say that about a pub. Drinkers are quite welcome here.

The village is worth poking about as well.

A brilliant pub, oozing character. Sensitively refurbed. The staff are superstars: we went on a packed Monday night and the two girls serving food AND working the bar were just brilliant. We had to wait a while as it was so busy, but were kept in the loop by them and offered a drink on the house. As well as some more high-end dishes, there were some generous portions priced at a tenner.
Lovely wine, the real ale deal with the barrels at the back of the bar and a really lovely mix of locals and visitors to the area.
The rooms upstairs (where we stayed) have been beautifully done: apart from a very creaky vintage French framed bed that kept us awake! Loos are across the corridor to a couple of the rooms, but it's your own loo and they provide robes to hide the embarrassment!
Love it. Great pub. Good food. Excellent staff. Good beer. Couple of local ciders. Great wine list. Highly recommended.

First Class.
A great place for a decent meal (I think it was voted 'gastro pub of the year' by some newspaper or other, but don't let that put you off).
A good selection of ales, wines and spirits,(although I'm not sure about any ghosts!)

Went there back in July but had a fantastic meal (scallops were fantastic) at a price that was more than worth it. Can't comment on the beers as I had to drive - if I am ever staying in the area I'd be sure to try them!

very atmospheric pub. good pint of branscombe straight from the barrel.

A gem of a pub. A bit remote if you plan to drink. The food is well worth making a visit for.

What a bizarre place! Lots of little alcoves off the two main bars and a real surprise awaits you in the mens toilets.....
Great selection of ales behind the bar. More than likely haunted.
