Multiroomed Public house with pleasant open bar area with barrels (firkins) racked behind the bar with real sold on gravity, by friendly barstaff

Two from Mighty oak and Adnams. Very reasonably priced 2.70-.280. Refreshing absence of GK. Beers in good condition

Recent local camra regional award, deservedly so and worthy of its entry in GBG 2010. I will make the effort to return.

One of the best Pubs in the area. Food is home cooked, fresh and plentiful. the beer is generally from Adnams and Mighty Oak and not, thankfully, Greene King as is so often the case in this area.

charming little pub in a quaint little village, nice friendly service although quite quiet on a Friday afternoon. The food was absolutely delicious, although it did keep disappearing off the specials board quickly! Tomato and Lentil soup of the day with warm granary roll 3.50, kofte lamb meatballs and rice and spicy chicken and rice 9.50 each. The decor and garden could do with a bit of an upgrade but will certainly be going back soon. 9/10

A 15th century Coaching Inn with a rambling and relatively unspoilt interior, this place has been in same family for many years and retains a loyal selection of staff offering a degree of stability that few pubs rarely enjoy. In the small main bar just inside the main door, the well kept beer is served by gravity direct from the barrels behind the bar. 2 Mighty Oak beers (Maldon Gold and IPA) and Adnams are standard plus a guest beer (disappointingly London Pride on my last vist although I guess it is not as common in this area). It should be noted that the price of soft drinks is quite hefty. A rather hypnosis inducing clock watches over the proceedings in this intimate bar but for a bit more space, take the corridor round the back of the pub to the larger bar. On the way, take a moment to peek through the windows to the adjoining rooms if they are not open (they are generally used for functions or during busy periods). The larger saloon bar has a bare brick wall along one side with built in fireplace and beamed ceiling with a few brasses and pewter tankards. Beer clips behind the bar show the range of guests that have passed through (most far more interesting than London Pride!). The food has a very good reputation although I have not eaten here. An upstairs function room (no dancing allowed) is used regularly for live music sessions or larger private functions. Quiz night on Sundays. When the weather is fine, the huge spacious orchard garden to the rear is just the ticket. The pretty village is worth exploring and the castle itself is a short walk away.

Just been to the best beer festival in a pub, and was served by a very knowledgeable man behind the bar and the host was a lovely lady (Penny) who made us all welcome. There was 16 ales served at a perfect temperature and a great joice to suit all tastes. my favourites was
1/ bath ales "wild hare" golden organic beer with a fresh citrus hoppy aroma 4.5%,
2/caiggorm "trade winds" light golden in colour with a high proportation of wheat and corn, 4.3%. 3/mighty oak "skinnackered" a tawney red bitter that will give a rosy glow to a long summer evening.
All this was happening in a very old Essex village with olde worlde houses. and to top it all there was a spit roast lamb served in the garden

another gem of a pub with a long history set in a lovely part of the Essex countryside, all beers are on gravity and the staff and locals are so friendly, well worth a visit or two. bus 89 from Braintree will put you off outside. dont forget the beer festival on the 15th and 16th July and look forward to a hog roast in the garden!!

A truly great multi roomed pub,one of which is non smoking,in a very picturesque Essex village. When you walk in it's like stepping back hundreds of years. All real ales are on gravity with GK IPA always on with a couple of guests all served by very friendly staff. There is a beer festival this year on 15th and 16th july which should be well worth a visit. This pub is a gem and should not be missed.
