..such a shame.... this was my regular for the last 15 or so years,.. and it's finally closed....

The place had been going down hill for the last 2-3 years,.. no beer, high prices, and not a great atmosphere,..

Hope it re-opens soon, could be great again,..! (as long as they put the pool tables back)

This was a great community pub but the new landlord has ruined it. And he buys the bottled beer from Tesco Express.

This place is a complete disaster! There's hardly any beer to choose from and it's all pressure beer and that's over priced. It's got a really intimidating atmosphere too. It's got that bad that there's a group on facebook called The Cromwell Inn, Basingstoke - Where Did It All Go Wrong.

I grew up close to this pub and it's improved a lot. But then when i grew up there was a fight there every saturday night!

Only 1 pump for real ale and most of the time it is rubbish(they don't shift it quick enough)The place is starting to look tired and the toilets could do with a deep clean - they stink.
The Landlord is friendly but could curb his language.
This pub with the right management could be a goldmine!!

Great place for a quiet night out reasonably priced very friendly and polite staff some great changes recently nice to see a pub that still has pool tables that cater for the 20+ clientele

An old converted countryside huge barn, now a a pub.
anonymous - 5 Aug 2007 13:50
.....the current owners have done a lot to make this once tired pub look far more inviting,....

They have removed all the old chunky beams around the seating area and bar and with the added mirrors really brightened the place up.. (still waiting for those elusive windows to be fitted tho)....

The pool tables are top class and thank god for the smoking ban, as previously it was hard to breath in there some nights due to many of the local chain smokers,....

They also put in the long over due pub garden last year, I have no idea why previous owners didn't do this a long long time ago?

Bad points I would say are, prices are expensive, some have actually come down (i guess due to complaints?) but are still far higher than going in to the pubs in town........

I use to live around Lychpit, have they done the referb? They were going to in 06 I think, and have they got rid of the tv's?
rustykiwi - 6 Jul 2007 05:26
This is a great pub, i dont see why everyone is moaning about prices there fine. love the pool tables and the locals are great, jugs and special shots there are excellent, love the atmosphere, need to cheer up some of the old grumpy men tho...

Best nite friday, oh and what the hell happened to Zico x

Rip-off prices and football on TV, left and walked to Old Basing to escape both.

Having just moved to the area from London, i loved the look of the Cromwell Arms from the outside. The big oak beams and towering roof of the old barn style building look fantastic. Being located in such a fabulous historic building, in a prime location in the centre of up and coming Lychpit, it is a shame that this pub suffers from "Sports Pub" syndrome. Not a pub to go to if you want a conversation, everyone is too busy leaning on the bar, clad in their teams regalia, fixated by whatever they see on the screen above the bar. A request to the landlord: Get rid of the sports screens, make the place look a bit more classy and you could triple your profits overnight. A pub with excellent potential, i wait to see what becomes of it. I couldn't recommend it at this point... The Bolton Arms or the Crown in Old Basing really are in a completely different league... the drinks are cheap though.

Landlord - Check out the Queen's College Arm's in Bramley on the A340, Make the Cromwell more like that and i'll be recommending you to everyone i know.

Rating 6,
Potential Rating 10!

been going there for many years,...... seen some bad landlords and some very rude bar staff in the past, but the new landlords Debbie and Chris are very friendly and have done the place up very nicely,... definitley the best place to go for a beer and a game of pool,.

Only thing that lets it down is the price of the beer though, far to high,.... much cheaper to go in to the town....,

great family pub, used to be a hovel before chris and debbie took over. we bring our family in every week and the staff are very friendly and always make me and my family welcome. like the new re-furb and cant wait for the beer garden and windows to go in. prices are lower than some pubs in the area and you do get a good pint and good service for your money. we will be returning because we love the place. top marks to chris and debbie.

Looking good, a nice place for a pint, also doing lunch now which we were all very pleased with. Still charging silly drinks prices mind.
raywest - 10 Oct 2005 16:30
Good bar staff and pleasant punters, drinks overpriced though sadly. And that's the only reason we do not go there more often.

THE CROM IS A VERY FRIENDLY PLACE TO DRINK WHERE THE LOCALS MAKE YOU FEEL VERY WELCOME. THE BEER IS QUITE TASTY AS WELL AS SOME OF THE BAR STAFF!

Best pub ever!!!

I have been drinking in the Cromwell for a while now and i would just like to say that it is home to the Wedgie King.......
Jamie - 15 Apr 2004 10:29
This pub is dark and abit smoky but locals are pleasent and you dont feel like an outsider. They have entertainment every fortnight which is usually good.
anonymous - 29 Mar 2004 18:16
This place really is quite poor. The landlord is weak and because of this the place seems to have been taken over by teenagers wanting to play pool and table football. It could have been a nice pub but it has no charm anymore.
james beattie - 22 Mar 2004 12:30
It's ok but there was a real idiot behind the bar, a loutish character with a baseball cab and a track suit. He was ignorant rude and completely unsuited at his job. Whilst he's in there, i'm not.
Alex - 7 Mar 2004 17:06
This used to be used as a training pub for landlords by the brewery resulting in the varying standards and atmosphere over the years. Some were great some were rubbish. Now it seems the brewery have sold the lease so it should settle down now. No food available which is a shame as it was, sometimes, very good.

I have been there several times and to be honest it has a great atmosphere, which not many pubs have (millstone pub for instance) the pub keeps to its routes by giving the public a feeling you are going back to 1600s with its dark interior and on the walls it shows off the center pieces of cromwells time and giving the impression of what it may have been like during the civil war (very dark time indeed).

The locals are very welcoming and have a lot to say about the area in general, some pubs have a very stricked way about them and the locals are very weiry on who comes in or not but the cromwell is different and has this relaxed atmosphere and at the same time being very lively and exciting.

Well it's alright I suppose, on a quiet housing estate in Basingstoke with local M&W shop next door, to avoid the high prices of the fag machine. Very dark inside though. Don't go there at lunchtime Mon - Fri, as the place is swamped by yuppies from the local business park.
