please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A Monday afternoon visit to Cockwood for some lunch and a couple of beers.

First stop was the Ship Inn. A very homely pub with an old open fireplace, wooden beams and an overall nautical theme.

4 hand pumps with 4 ales, 1 from Otter, 1 from Dartmouth and 2 from Hanlons. The couple of pints of Hanlons Yellow Hammer @ 4.3% I had was excellent.

Food is popular with an extensive menu and a decent amount of fish options on the special's board. The 4 of us all had sandwich's which were very good and decently priced.

A very nice pub, good food and service, good choice of ales, The Ship is worth a visit and is recommended by me.

Busy little pub when visited although by the end of the evening we were only our own. Beer was well kept if unexciting. Food was acceptable.
Canotcommend on location as it was dark, but had potential.

Visited the Ship with friends for an evening meal. The food was good and the young lady who served as was excellent. However, the person named Chris who I assumed to be the landlord was quite a different story!!! He appeared to be a most miserable and unwelcoming character - where have all the landlords gone?
We were presented with a bill inçluding drinks which we had not had. I accept that mistakes can be made, but when pointed out to him he made no effort at an apology and even worse no word of thanks for the £80+ which was handed to him. Very much doubt that we will visit the Ship again.

It was a nice day so the three of us took the train from Exeter to Starcross and then bus to Cockwood Harbour to enjoy both the Ship and The Anchor. What a good choice - the weather was lovely and both pubs were excellent. The Ship gave us the chance ot try Bays Brewery Topsail which was very nice indeed (2 pints of that one) They also had three other beers and the pub is a nice little "olde-worlde" place with a pleasant patio area to the side. Perhaps a tadge on the low-key side for service (I always give points for a nice friendly welcome to new customers which then makes you feel at home and want to stay). Anyway the beer was fine and we enjoyed the pub in the sunshine.

Had lunch here today. Decent pint, nice food, friendly staff, lovely setting.
Perhaps our single post friend below may have an axe to grind.

Sorry sad and surprised for the experience mikeB58 had. We visited The Ship last May and had the best (5) pints of Jail Ale since the Drewe Arms (which is straight out of the firkin), not only that, the young lads behind the bar not only were courteous, patient and respectful, but seemed to posess at least a basic knowledge of the product they were serving - a refreshing change for these two fifty-something CAMRA Real Ale questers. The Ship is the pub of choice for us in Cockwood now.

Dear mikeb58

As the landlord of this pub I would appreciate it if you could give me exact details of the experience you had in my pub as we take customer service very seriously here.

Between us as a family we have over 100 years experience in the pub trade and have never been accused of anything like the things stated in your review.

If it was a member of staff that you felt was at fault, for whatever reason, then the only way to deal with it would be for you to contact us and explain your issue, which we would be more than happy to do.

The pub itself is excellent, the beer is good and the food is acceptable.
The hosts however are very arogant and extremely off hand and verging on rude,
they have no sense of a welcoming attitude.

Thye act as if they are doing you a favour by serving you.
Hardly a good trait when the pub is empty in the middle of feb.

Their attitude was very pompous and dis interested even with the few locals we saw in the pub. The locals themselves were very friendly and good company.

The Anchor is a better choice, the food is as good, as is the beer but the welcome is warm friendly and fun.

Avoid the Ship it is not a good advert for traditional pub landlords and welcoming
atmosphere.

exellent pub with a good selection of ales and really good food that always seems to be red hot and well served, the only down side is if you want to eat the place is usually very busy but the staff are helpfull and will try and get you in somewhere.

My friend and i cycled to the Ship at Cockwood from Exeter for Sunday lunch.
We were impressed and although we did'nt book they managed to squeeze us in without a problem.
The only trouble was we had to cycle back!

8/10

A dimond in the rough. Excellent food and good beer (especially cornish ale). The staff were friendly but the locals were my personal highlight. Fishermans tales and local colour abound, enjoy.

Been a few times, great selection of food, with constantly evolving menus, nice beer garden, strange locals though

This pub, over 200 years old, has just been revitalised with new management. Lovely ambience. Superb range of wines and champagne by the glass,
Garden with estuary and harbour views. Excellent menu with mains from 7 and Sunday Brunch.
