user reviews of the Royal Marine, Lyne

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We’ve been coming to this pub on and off over the years and invariably found that the ales’ quality was on and off too.

However recently, we thought we’d give this pub another go (as we don’t like hearing of pubs closing). We were pleasantly surprised with the good range of well-kept ales (price range £3.25 (Landlord’s choice) to £3.50-ish) that are on offer. The friendly landlord advised us that he’s trying to organise a beer festival on the first weekend of October (4th/5th Saturday/Sunday).

We’ve also tried the food cooked by the landlady. There’s a black board on the wall next to the bar with 2 specials (about £9.00) along with a basic menu. We had some very tasty lamb shanks and so were the rack of ribs we tried 10 days or so later.

The landlord/landlady are trying hard and it seems to be working. It’s a lovely and welcoming pub. We like sitting outside in the summer and other than the very few locals who race down the road, it is a quiet lane and the pub is worth seeking.

Had a pint of Doom Bar here, and it was above average. Looks like the pub is closed on Saturday nights through the winter.

Traditional old-fashioned pub with welcoming atmosphere and exceptional Ruddles - doesn't matter what the beer range is if it's kept as well as this.

In the village of Lyne, the other side of the M25 motorway from Chertsey, is The Royal Marine, a small cosy, comfortable free house.

The pub dates back to 1847 and was originally 2 separate cottages. It's name is in recognition of the fact that Queen Victoria paid a visit to see the marines stationed down the road at nearby Chobham Common.

A comfortable, carpeted traditional interior features a number of items of marine memorabilia and a collection of jugs hanging from the ceiling beams to the left of the entrance. Unusually, for such a small pub, room is found in one corner for a dartboard. I don't recollect seeing any TV's. Leather bound menus on each table would appear at first glance to indicate a strong food emphasis, but, based on my recent Saturday lunchtime visit, this is first and foremost a pub, with a seemingly loyal band of regulars.

A rather scruffy well worn sign on a fence directs customers to the "Patrons Car Park" - a car park behind the pub which is notably large for a pub this size. On street parking is also available. Past the car park is a garden. There's seating on the pavement at the front where you can watch the locals speed past in their Chelsea Tractors ( 4x4's ) or, occasionally, a farmer transporting bales of hay on a more conventional tractor.

The pub appears to be very much part of the local community and puts on occasional Hog Roasts, BBQ's etc. An "RSPCA Fun Day" is planned for 18 September. It is therefore somewhat surprising that the pub normally closes at 2.30pm ( even on a Saturday ) and doesn't open at all on Sunday evening ( 3pm close on Sundays ).

The Royal Marine is a CAMRA Good Beer Guide regular and the yearly stickers are displayed behind the bar. There's several CAMRA branch certificates on show, including one for local CAMRA Branch Pub of the Year for 2006.

There's 4 handpumps which were serving Ruddles County, Ruddles Best, Greene King Sun Dance and Sharps Doom Bar, a selection which might best be described as uninteresting. The existence of Courage Best posters in the gents would appear to suggest that that beer is often on. Both the Ruddles County and the GK Sun Dance were in good condition, but they're not particularly inspiring beers at the best of times and the emphasis on Greene King brewed beers ( 3 out of 4 ) was a disappointment.

I'd happily revisit, but I'd be hoping for a better beer selection if I do.

Nice little pub with an intimate atmosphere and some good ales. Stopped in for a couple last week after reading good reviews below. Friendly barman and locals, but things were spoiled a bit by the middle-aged couple who spent the whole evening sat at the bar kissing noisily and inappropriately and irritated everyone in there. Would definitely come back, provided that couple aren't in there again!

In the area so stopped for a quick pint. Triple fff Altons Pride, Doom Bar and Greene King Olde Trip and Ruddles County. Nice little pub with seating outside at the front and in the beer garden below the car park. Ales priced at 3.05 - 3.15. Closes for the afternoon.

All you could want from a pub. A warm welcome, excellent beer (always changing), friendly locals and good food.
On the down side - no chips. On the up side - no smell of chips!
Was N Surrey pub of the Year a couple of years ago, and it's still as good.
Especially worthy of note is the sub-Surrey price of the beer. Both the cheapest and the best kept for miles around.

2.50 for a pint of lime & soda are they having a laugh. Lovely little pub.
good food (taking a risk not doing chips).
great beer 4 real ales, only a little bit dearer than the lime & soda.

Well, its a Monday. I have an odd day off work and I had heard there was a nice cosy pub 5 minutes drive away. So I decided to visit the Royal Marine in Lyne. Everything that has been said already about this pub is correct. Its a great place to visit. They had 3 bitters (Hogsback TEA, a local bitter brewed by a micro brewery in Addlestone and a third which I dont recall). As I had just driven back from visiting the Hogsback brewery with a boot full of beer I decided to go for the Addlestone beer. I am pleased I did. I know the Hogsback is always good but the Addlestone brew was lovely with a rich flowery aftertaste. Excellent. I ordered my standard food (which should be done by every pub in the world) - steak and chips. I couldnt fault it. The steak was just right, there was a nice plate full of food. In fact I'd swear the guy who cooked it actually brought it to my table. When was the last time Gordon Ramsay did that ? On top of all this one of what I assume was a regular even let me borrow his paper to read. Very Good.

Excellent little pub with great beer and friendly smiling faces behind the bar. Never had a bad pint (and I'm fussy) and they always rotate whats on offer.
Well worth hunting out.

Great little pub. Very friendly landlord. Has a good selection of real ales. Interesting knick-knacks: loads of tankards and some interesting militaria.

Food was excellent. Best all day breakfast for miles and the home cooked ham and eggs are absolutely mouthwatering !!

Highly recommend a visit.

Return visit yesterday, must admit I was a lot impressed. The beer range was good (4 ales, including a lovely dark - Pullman's Old Ale) and the condition was good overall. Inside was nice and cosy, and there was a genial, if quiet atmosphere. Can see why it won North Surrey CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2006.

Darts was being played, and the food served up was of the classic 'being looked after by dad' variety, a huge plate of ham, egg peas and chips.

I can recommend this place wholeheartedly on current form.

Personally, I think this is a great little gem. The landlord, Pat, and wife Sue are very friendly. Beer is always top notch and often features a mild.

Lyne Mountain Rescue Team? The local charity fund-raising organisation is based in the pub.

A nice little ale-house tucked away just off the M25. Interior marine themed and doubles-up as HQ of the Lyne Mountain Rescue Team (the joke being there are no mountains in Surrey...)

Real Ale available, but didn't strike me as being anything to shout about. A lot of people do swear by this place however, so give it a try!
