user reviews of the Horseshoe Inn, Mamhilad

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Be at ease, dear reader. "Mamhilad" is not a fearsome utterance, in some Middle Eastern tongue, meaning "death to the unbeliever". It is the name of the nearest village to this pleasant, far-from-terrifying pub.

There were four ales on when we called. Among them being Tribute and Atlantic. The other two were perhaps shuffling about, avoiding eye contact, because I don't recall them now, but the Atlantic was crystal clear and fresh.

Staff were friendly, good-humoured and polite - despite having to nip down to the cellar and draw each pint by gravity, owing to a temporary technical problem.

After a visit to the remote Goose & Cuckoo in Upper Llanover, we moved on to the first of two pubs in Mamhilad. The Horseshoe was my favourite pub of the day in Wales. It is a fairly small place that has friendly and professional service. The barman, chef and landlord took a keen interest. Ales were Mad Dog Y Ffoledd, Goffs Camelot & Tiny Rebel Cwtch. Then I noticed the selection of 6 ciders - Westons Old Rosie & Family Reserve, Gwynt y Ddraig Ancient Warrior & Farmhouse Scrumpy and Hallets Oak Aged & Blindfold. Hallets is one of my favourite producers and apparently they are based nearby here. We stayed for a late Sunday lunch, which was also very enjoyable. Recommended.

The Horseshoe Inn is well worth a visit. Amazing service with great choice of food at reasonable prices. Views from the exterior seating are really beautiful. Good range of beers and ales.

I can't say much more than chazzles to be honest - the renovation the girls have done on the old place is amazing....it's like a totally different building, just within the same walls as before!
A friend & I went there on a weekday evening recently for food & I would go so far as to say it was the best pub food I have tasted in ages! I only wish I'd had enough room for dessert!
Lovely, family-run pub. Would thoroughly recommend! :)

i am pleased to report after a recent visit that the Horseshoe is back in business and is offering a modern twist on the classic country pub. Well kept ales and an interesting choices on tap - including Doom Bar and Brooklyn lager (which i don't think i've even seen in Wales before!). A superb choice of specials were also on offer, the local cider was top notch, as was our meal. Really pleasing to find this fantastic location has a pub to match. Full marks to the lovely landladies that have brought the Horseshoe back to life!

Should never have messed with the classic country pub formula, when this place was great. Lets hope it gets new owners that want to restore the place to its former glories...

Looks like it's closing down. They were taking the pictures off the walls on Friday!

went to the horseshoe inn, mamhilad. no carling, no stella, limited wines and ale that was dirtier than a sess pit, all over priced with delayed and inedable food. recommend i do not!

The food served here was excellent however, probably best to book a table earlier rather than later in the evening because by 9pm a number of the specials had run out. Drinks served at the bar were rather pricey.
They have a "table policy",which appears rather inflexible in that you have to sit were they tell you to. My overall impression and rating of this establishment however is overshadowed by the attitude of the manager, who in front of a restaurant full of customers, reprimanded me for not adhering to their table policy. Would I go there again? Yes, if there were a change of management.
