Soon to be demolished it seems - planning permission for a revised plan approved.

Absolutely horrible place that never had any quality beer on (there's about as much chance of getting a pint of Bombardier now its closed as there ever was) and was full of lunatics who, variously, chucked food around, shouted for no reason, wore 80's style demin outfits stared at you. This may sound quite entertaining; it's not if you want a pint in peace.

I believe that the application was rejected and it has now gone to appeal. Given that it is in Wimbledon Village, I can't see the appeal working. Hurrah!

I agree - this is so called progress - I feel desperately sorry for the locals whose pub this once was. Can't see myself calling in when it reopens, somehow

Planning application for total rebuild incorporating ground floor gastro-pub.......dont expect anything for a couple of years !!!! Go to The Swan next door

The King of Denmark is now closed and as far as I know is to remain so. I believe the lease has expired and the freeholder wants to do other things with it.

A sad loss, far more of a real pub than the neighbouring Swan, which is excellent nevertheless, particularly if you're eating.

A proper local pub, with cheaper drinks than most village pubs and a much nicer atmosphere. Unfortunately it's closing down soon, so hurry for a final pint.

Good real local pub, unlike most of the others in Wimbledon Village, and much cheaper prices.Tatty yes,but always friendly and great for watching Sky TV and pay per view football.

I like this place, it has character and its grungey feel is great because it so pisses off the local residents who feel it affects their property prices. Actually its not that bad and is an old fashioned pub. If the la de da locals don't like the fact that it doesn't sell Harvey Wallbangers then welcome to the real world where most of us serfs live.

old faithful. i grew up in here. shame there's no darts board anymore. cosy, friendly and the regular drunks hunched in the corner give it that community feel. great for a quiet pint sitting reading the paper. i vaguely remeber one new years party being wicked though.

Attica, the King of Denmark, Wimbledon was one of my watering holes in the late sixties before heading to warmer climes(Australia).
Is it possible I know you?
By the way, my brother Alun played in Cat Stevens band.
cheers, phil

Sad to hear the King has gone downhill.

This was my local 35 years ago, just before I left England for America.

In the late '60's it was "almost famous", frequented by various celebrities like Dave Davis of the Kinks (who liked the public bar darts), Cat Stevens and his band (who were a bunch of good blokes), Donovan, Oliver Reed, and many others.
One Saturday early evening I even saw John Lennon step in for a drink, probably on his way up to London for the night. (He stood at the bar and only stayed for 10 minutes, but I did make it a point to step up and order a pint so I could stand next to him.)

The King of Denmark in its day was so popular that on a weekend you could barely even stand in the saloon bar. The Swan next door was a dump that had barely a dozen patrons on a Saturday night. You would only go there if you had just met a girl at the King and needed to talk.

Well, times change, not always for the bast ...

what are you on about. a great football pub with great bar stuff and punters/ who cares what it looks like

10/10***

Utterly mediocre and that's probably being overgenerous. The only 'beer' available was Courage Best which was clearly not the best of starts. Nasty and slightly tatty decor and the other punters were fairly dodgy looking. With the much better Swan next door this place is easily avoidable.

got served in here without trouble at 14. that was 5 years ago, apparently they r trying to clamp down. Still, if ur in the area the village is a couple of minutes walk away - perhaps more expensive, but worth it

If only the King of Denmark owned this pub then maybe it would have some money spent on it...
