A fine pub, excellent beer, friendly staff and nice atmosphere. One small problem is the lack of comfortable seating.

Four of us spent a great weekend at the Sportsman Inn in Amberley whilst walking on the South Downs. It's a nice, traditional, well run pub and Rob the landlord and his staff couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. The three beers we tried (Dark Star Hophead, Harvey's Best and Brains SA) were all very well kept and the food was perhaps the best pub food we had ever tasted (perhaps rude to call it "pub food" as it would have graced many good restaurants) and we felt, good value for money. The pub is nicely situated overlooking the Amberley Wild Brooks (water meadows) to the rear, has three small cosy bars including a brick floored public bar with dart board and a nice conservatory overlooking the wild brooks where most of the food is served. Our bedrooms were comfortable, clean and well equipped. Can't wait to return.

Fantastic views from the beer garden / wooden decking area out back.

Worth visiting this pub for the views alone.

We only stopped for one drink, so don't want to pass comment on the pub as a whole, based on one pint.

Only had time for a quick pint whilst cycling through, very friendly, excellent location, menu seems appetizing, must return soon.

Warm afternoon on the verandah overlooking the Brooks with a cool pint, very nice indeed.

Stayed here recently, for the second year running, as the half way point on our annual cycle the south downs way weekend. We are always really well looked after, our bikes safely locked in an out building overnight, and breakfast laid on an hour earlier than usual to allow us to get away in good time. In addition to this the food (dinner and breakfast) and beer (3 to 4 well kept local real ales) are also well worthy of a visit. Just a shame we're usually so tired that we only last until about 9.30pm before retiring for the night.

A pleasant country pub nestling on the edge of Amberley with a friendly atmosphere, I enjoyed a well kept pint of Hophead (Dark Star) and Harveys Best. Food was excellent and even though tending towards the pricier end of the scale for pub food, represented good value because of the high quality and variety. Would certainly recommend a visit if you're in the area. There is a very small car park (takes five or six cars) but you can park on the road.

nice to see the sportsman in good hands, would have been a shame if chris took it back.he left because the black horse was so good and could not compete.sportsman is now fresh clean with good menu and was nice to see all the old faces back.very nice place to go on a nice day because of the views and the evening is good because of the food.i think its the only place to go in amberley as black horse is finished. went past last saturday and only 3 people in there, says it all really. good luck sportsman. molly

Went there a couple of weeks ago. Was not too impressed with the pub itself, bit smokey and was not too nice. But we had a meal and it was really nice. The landlord was also very friendly.

Visited Sunday 28 January for lunch, very good. On the bar, four real ales and a wide selection of good lagers and wines at very reasonable prices. Food, my wife had lamb and I had beef - all cooked perfectly and the sweet (fruit crumble) was to walk on hot coals for. The only criticism, the poor old chef got a bit unlucky with the yorkshire puddings! To the tourist, not easy to find but if you are visiting the Amberley Industrial Museum then this is all round better value for money compared to anything on the main road. We will go again - 8/10

Went to a wedding reception a few miles away and stayed here. Nice atmosphere, incredible views and friendly bar staff.

I agree the 'tea room conservatory' could be better but it's nice to sit outside and the views more than make up for it!

Although not very appealing from the outside it's quite cosy inside with a bit of character. Staff are friendly. Food is ok. View from the conservatory or terrace is very nice - wetlands area, we saw deer.

Going against the grain of opinion here we preferred it to The Black Horse.

No atmosphere, horrible place. They did us a favour, when after phoning to ensure that there were tables free for dinner, we arrived to find no space. Head to the Black Horse!

Must echo previous comments. A very sad demise of a once great pub.I never thought I would prefer the Black Horse.

Went this pub after reading about it in the good pub guide. Big mistake! a horrible pub stayed for a quick pint then straight out. There are a couple of tables by the bar with some appalling new age art on the walls for sale, hideous (made a dull room look like a crime scene). Main seating area is in an ajoining conservatory to left of the bar, looks horrible, bit like a tea room almost. The view out the window is very nice but pub its self lacks any kind of distinctive feature of interest, doesnt even feel like a pub to me. Somewhat disjointed and deadpan atmosphere. All the ales were off except London Pride which tasted abit off aswell. Horror of a pub, certainly won't return. Try if you wish, not worth the time if you ask me.
