Don't drink here!
We booked the upstairs for my colleagues farewell. The staff double booked and shooed us out, despite the fact we had all bought meals and drinks. Also the service was horrendous. There are lots of good pubs in Greenwich, try one of the others.
Deptford_Dunc - 28 Mar 2015 01:31
Now serving several real ales, £2.25 all day Monday's.
lionbaz - 23 Jun 2013 23:44
This has been done up in the last month. Still very cheap for beer and wine. Layout isn't the best but saying that its still probably one of the better places in Greenwich to drink.
Service is quick, toilets clean.
Mattyh34 - 13 Jun 2012 10:42
I popped in yesterday to watch the football

Good atmosphere, had a great burger

And they were offering a pint of Spiced Ale for 2.00 Absolute Bargain!!!

Would definately come again
helsbels30 - 24 Nov 2011 11:26
Looked at a flat near this pub so popped in for a pint.

Not too bad but it was quiet when I was there. Toilets were crap!

Probably go there regularly if I end up moving to the area though!
spike45 - 5 Feb 2010 17:01
I really like this pub. I always find the staff friendly, the prices are reasonable. toilets are shabby and could do with a touch up. think the blonde manager is really nice
SamBebb99 - 17 Sep 2009 09:13
Medium large featureless modern pub that feels like it has been removed from a franchise chain (Scream) and left to decay. it's in the language school area of Greenwich, so attracts a number of students. There are no casks ales. Standard pub fare at around 5 a meal. All keg lager and cider, plus Guinness.

Not a place to visit twice - really quite scruffy and dirty.
SilkTork - 13 Sep 2009 23:52
It's very student-friendly... and I'm a student - albeit that I'm in my mid-20s and prefer a good quality ale and a nice relaxing pub to drink it in, but this place has served me well in other ways so I can't really complain.

To be fair, calling it a student pub does it a disservice, it's not that bad. I mean, sure, it's not upmarket, it's not the sort of place you'd write to CAMRA about and it's not the sort of place you'd go for a quiet beer... but it's the place to go if what you want is to get cheaply bladdered with your mates.
tiredjay - 11 Sep 2009 23:45
I for one agree with rbaker74.
keep all the worst punters in Greenwich at the worst pub in the area.
alright on a quiet night in fairness.
not a fan of the bald barman either

peace and beers!
jdeath - 26 Feb 2009 11:41
Yeah, there are betters pubs in Greenwich, but there is a lot to like about the Auctioneer. The food is good and cheap. My orders have always been correct. The staff, contrary to what has been said, have always been friendly to me. Yeah, it can be a a bit. grubby, but it's basically a student pub and if you don't like it, go somehwere else and leave it for the rest of us.
rbaker74 - 25 Feb 2009 21:14
Visited this pub for a bite to eat on a Saturday afternoon. We were initially served by a surly barmaid, who informed us there was no bitter on, just lager and cider. We were then pointed in the general direction of where the cutlery was and told to go sit upstairs, the food would be with us in 30 mins. Waited over an hour at a dirty, sticky table near the kitchen door, which was propped open. The food finally arrived and all 5 meals were wrong. Explained this to the waitress, who brought the chef, who said he had prepared what he had been told we had ordered. Aforementioned barmaid then appeared from downstairs and berated us agressively, claiming that we were lying about what we had ordered. Even when we offered to pay the difference, she continued to call us liars (quite why we would lie about such a thing was never actually established), to the point where we had no choice but to ask for a refund. This we eventually received. We ended up having a McDonalds. Absolutely unbelievable. This place does not offer a pleasant dining experience. If you read this and then visit, you really need your bumps feeling.
Wrenf - 9 Feb 2009 12:27
On behalf of the Auctioneer and all of its staff, I would like to point out there is no truth in the comment posted by MrRight on 6th November. And we would welcome any queries about such in person.
Auctioneer - 29 Jan 2009 18:16
Recently was redecorated. The amount of pictures, mirrors and other stuff on the wall is a bit over the top, but sofas and toilets have been fixed (thank God!). Not a place for the Real Ale fans, but if your a student or of similar age, then you won't want to leave this place.
drinkdrinkdrink - 7 Jan 2009 03:25
Well, its a Scream pub- so its well like every other Scream pub.
Mock industrial look cut in half oil drums with light bulbs in them providing a strange orange glow on brown sofas, big tables and black shirted staff moping up spillage.
Soulless but strangely lively thanks to a generally immature bin full of students in search of yellow card discounted larger and Tequila chasers.
The weekend seems to bring a more sinister edge to the place as the usual army of tight shirted men descend on the place on route to the Venue.

Though bearable, all the fun of a dead box of cats

Boston_Jones - 13 Aug 2008 16:27
The Auctioneer is a little bit 1996 but I like 1996.

No ale on here at all but the Guinness was decent and the service was friendly. Comfortable enough but the interior is very much Baddiel and Skinner and Shed Seven.

Not remarkable but you can imagine if you was local a reliable to place to stop by.
terenced - 28 Jul 2008 08:17
Can't say I enjoyed this place on a Saturday night - but I probably would have done when I was a student.

NB - the range of beer is not very good.
pubcollector - 14 Oct 2007 13:01
Relaxed place and lively! Always had a great time here! Music, pool and fast service - Does the job!
thesmiths - 22 Jul 2007 12:14
A students and youngsters hang-out, The Auctioneer is a lively bar a short walk from the train station and if a youthful crowd, pool and indie tunes are your bag, then you may find here appealing. I was here last night (23rd June) and quite liked it. The interior is absolutely nothing special at all, and its not a place for the ale buffs, but it worked for me. Prices were reasonable enough and the service was okay and with a smile. Despite being busy, it wasnt uncomfortable either. Im not too sure about Greenwich itself, but there are definitely worse places for the 20-something crowd to go.

HTM69 - 24 Jun 2007 14:12
I go to this pub every Thursday for Jacks quiz it is brilliant. In fact i am one of the Cheese eating surrender Monkeys if you are ever in there on a Monday. The staff are very freindly and very quick with the drinks. It is not normally too packed and the rage of Beer is very good, so is their snake bite.
17831918 - 7 May 2007 16:38

A proper student dig but if your young you should like it. Its a typical scream pub with student offers etc. The pint and burger deal for 3.50 is an utter bargain!

Worth a quick visit to kick the night off
austin - 27 Apr 2007 16:13
Decent enough studenty cheapish quizzer pool pub. Good first stop.
anonymous - 13 Apr 2007 16:14
I was here on Thursday the 25th for a leaving drinks shindig. I am 27 and the bouncer asked me for ID! Yes ID! Some might say I should be complaimented on being IDed but I beg to differ! The bouncer said he didnt know who I was which suggests to me if the bouncer knows you then ID isnt needed which is wrong in my opinion. A friend of mine had the same problem and he was with a friend in he's fifties!!! Rant aside it was an ok night especially as it was Pound a Drink night, but the drink was Carlsberg so you really can't complain. The Auctioneer is very a student pub and this was evident by the clientale.
Leroy79 - 27 Jan 2007 13:49
I used to go in there every thursday, but it seems to have lost its touch... Agreed, Jack's quiz nights are pretty decent though. Hate the fact that it gets so packed out though, means you've gotta queue for ages to get a drink and when you get there you're usually told they've run out of ice, which spoils things a bit. Still can't knock it as I get free yellow cards!
anonymous - 19 Dec 2006 19:07
I've changed my mind about this place since I am now in there at least two or three times a week.

The beer is still pretty poor both in terms of selection and temperature (only bother with Grolsch or Stella) but the food has definitely improved. OK, it's junk food but it is good junk.

The regular events they run their now, like Jack's quiz on a monday night are great fun, and mean there's more to do here than sit and drink.

The new pool tables are a blessing as the balls actually run true now, whilst the permanant water feature in the gents is interesting, if rather annoying if you're wearing baggy jeans!

Also now the uni students are back most of the chavs stay away which is great.

PS I think they actually mopped the floor a couple of weeks ago so no danger of leaving your shoes behind when you go for a wander
the_sarah_day_fan_club - 15 Nov 2006 13:05

My girlfriend and I came here Saturday evening (28 Oct) to watch Charlton's away trip at Newcastle on Prem Plus. Yet they had the Heineken Cup rugby on EVERY screen. Shocking that this Sarf-East London pub would prefer to show Heineken Cup rugby when one of the local football teams televised game AWAY at Newcastle is on. No wonder the place was virtually empty. We promptly left. The Auctioneer has lost its pole position as best Greenwich pub to watch football in.

Searching_for_H_Files - 31 Oct 2006 11:14
Good starting pub wouldnt want to stay there all night full of tasy studenty types (women).
easyskip - 23 Sep 2006 17:02
I like this boozer. It's a bit like marmite in that you either like it or loathe it.

Booze is cheap for area, as is food especially if you are a student given the 'Yellow Card' promotion - or if you have nicked one. I can understand why some of the more up market types would not like it, as some of the furniture is not up to scratch and the toilets are a little on the dirty side.

Footy is live on TV and there are numerous of these, so a good view is virtually guaranteed. Thursday nights are always popular, given that it's 1.25 a drink on most drinks - Arse as father Jack would say!!!
chrisgum1 - 1 Sep 2006 14:09
A decent boozer to watch football, though I agree with the 'Sarah Day fan club' about the projection unit in this pub. The video dukebox is excellent though. Anyway, I generally see Greenwich as a couples place and other than a lunchtime maybe, this is not somewhere I would come with a lady friend! Therefore, I would also not class the Auctioneer as a place for lads 'on the pull' over a student Thursday, Friday or Saturday night.
Searching_for_H_Files - 11 Jul 2006 17:00
Agreed, this place isn't brilliant but it caters to a certain clientele and there are lots of places in Greenwich to go if loud student types aren't your cup of tea. Best avoided Thursdays if you're an oldie as it's student night, and probably weekends for that matter! Bouncers are decent, however, and the bar staff are very tolerant given the hoardes of youngsters thronging at the bar. Wouldn't recommend it for a quiet night out, especially with the music TV on loop making conversation difficult, but a drink at off-peak times is probably good. No real ales tho, which puts a black amrker next to it. A yellow card also helps as it's a bit pricey otherwise (3-05 for a bottle of tiger if memory serves!)
man_of_kent - 14 Apr 2006 17:39
The beer isn't great but 'broken glass'? really? This pub has 2 pool tables, which wins points in my book (although they are a bit sticky and not quite the right size). The lager is cheap and the atmosphere is generally lively. Also, I bet the person who rates it the worst in SE London has never been to Woolwich.
Pedders - 16 Mar 2006 13:57
This pub wins the award for worst pub in all Greenwich. No, actually come to think of it, it's the worst pub in all South East London.
JamesW - 16 Mar 2006 00:57
Jesus - this is an ok pub - many good nights here. You have to wonder about recent reviewers. Particularly the "Sarah Day fan club" apparently they have often been served burnt food.

How many times would a pub have to serve you burnt food before you stopped going there to eat? Once would be enough for me! Maybe a jealous competitor bitching?

Still it's not for every one. If your into your real ales and what not it's clearly not for you. Just a matter of taste really.

Personally I'd rather have a good pint of Stella than any of that real ale m'larky!
bewley - 22 Dec 2005 21:13
Absolutely dreadful place. But if you like sticky tables, over flowing ashtrays, crap service, flat beer, dodgy decor, grim food then this is the place for you!
I'd rather eat broken glass than have to venture into this cess pit again.
anonymous - 27 Sep 2005 12:07
Awful pub. OK its cheap but its cheap because the beers are rubbish. This is basically a weatherspoons that is trying to be 'hip' or 'cool'. The food is junk and has often been served to me burnt. Gets packed for the football, with students and young chavlings as it has a projection tv. Unfortunately this Projection unit is awful and hindered by the fact that the sun shines through the windows onto the screen on clear days mean you get a really washed out picture almost all the time.

Does have TVs behind the bar though which I suppose is a plus.
the_sarah_day_fan_club - 19 Sep 2005 17:40
This is a typical example of a shit pub where I once asked for a pint of beer only to be told that they didn't actually know what beer was, they didn't serve any and the only thing on offer was crap lager, alcopops and other such unenticing fare. Immaturity is the rule here, pay large amounts of money for a crap experience if that's what you want. For a football experience you'd be better off at Hardys or the Lord Hood.
georgebridges - 6 Jan 2005 00:49
The auctioneer is class! I do think the drinks are a bit overpriced but so what. I do think you get some pretentious idiots in there with their wannabe quirky haircuts
Nash - 19 Nov 2004 12:02
where did the young people go?... full of wannabe students that are CLEARLY over the hill! standards have definately slipped... all the way downhill.
mike - 12 Nov 2004 13:55
DO NOT EAT THE FOOD!
Being a great lover of scream pubs i was excited when i moved to greenwich and found this. But my God, how could anyone get a simple meal so wrong. The burger was RANK, the chips were cold, the cutlery dirty. And the Irn Bru was flat. So I was then given Coke, which was warm and also flat. This place is really bad. Only ood point is the funny bar man and he even admitted to me that 'standards have slipped'
Greenwich Gorilla - 19 Oct 2004 13:11
Went in there on Friday afternoon for some lunch. The food - what can I say?! Delish. The service - great. The atmosphere - spot on. I'd recommend this pub, it's wicked
Phil - 5 Jul 2004 00:32
Probably the best pub in Greenwich to watch the footie/rugby in, gets you in the right mood. I'd say start in this pub beofre moving on elsewhere - it's got a great atmoshphere. Yeh, it get's busy but surely thats proff of a good pub? Stop complaining about the students, its a STUDENT PU deal with it! Not my fave, but I still have a good time here. The manager's cool too, as are the staff
Alex Jonny Thrift - 18 Jun 2004 14:37
ITS FOR STUDENTS LINCOLN, GO TO WEATHERSPOONS! WHEN ARE PEOPLE GOING TO UNDERSTAND!
It's bad because there people singing and shouting? Do you mean enjoying themselves? Well in that case, NO FUN IN PUBS! NO DRINKING NO TALKING NO ANYTHING. Scream pubs are about being able to go out with your friends and have a laugh, be yourself and be loud if you like. Do you people just look out for scream pubs so you can go into them and have a bad time and then complain about it? I like the auctioneer. I've had some great times there.
joe - 14 Jun 2004 14:47
Really good pub if you want a cheap night out and to pull a student!
Gemma - 13 May 2004 17:27
Nah don't go here. The manager is well rude, as are the bar-staff, the beer tastes off - yuk. PLays crap music, esp. the DJ's. Eeugh it's absolute crap here
Nicola - 30 Mar 2004 23:51
Really good pub with a great atmosphere. Love it =o)
Lauren - 27 Feb 2004 18:25
I would highly recommend it! Wicked pub, but bad acoustics so everyone in there ends up shouting and u cant hear yourself think let alone what your mates are saying or the music thats playing. Bar staff are great well a bit dull, but at least the service is quick, people who go there seem up for a laugh, nice layout, good dress code I love it!! Best pub in Greenwich! Auctioneer gets the Mayors seal of approval! Outsiders rule!!
Tom Powell - 23 Feb 2004 14:03
It would be ok if the bar staff could remove their heads from their arses to searve you.
James - 23 Feb 2004 13:01
Naff pub catering for students & cash strapped people. Prices are cheap but its reflected in the quality of the beer & the food. Avoid.
Lolly - 10 Feb 2004 15:03
Nice pub, friendly staff, nice food and decent prices. Big screen showing all sporting action, and more than enough space upstairs and down. Lots of students so if you can't stand them you're probably best off going to one of your gastropubs but for normal people it's a very decent pub. 9/10
Steven - 5 Feb 2004 17:58
Wicked pub - rammed full of students. Mmm.... and the beers nice too!
Allan - 13 Nov 2003 15:40
it's a really nice pub and the staff are lovely. the reason that it offers student yellow card membership and promotions is because the pub is for students you plank! Get over it and if you don't like it i'm sure they won't miss your custom. whetherspoons offer promos for tax paying people, go there.
student type scream lover - 6 Oct 2003 20:44
Very friendly staff and less idiots than alot of other places in Greenwich.
James - 30 Jul 2003 22:56
Sorry to be contentious, but I like this pub. The staff are VERY friendly, (what are the other reviewers doing?). I especially like the food. Clean and comfortable. NOT as many student as I'd have thought !!
Kim - 16 Jul 2003 19:49
It's just the same as every other ITS A SCREAM PUB - full of students who enjoy drinking far too much and shouting, singing and generally being annoying. Only bonus is that most of them have large tv's for watching the football - and at these times (especially during the day) the atmosphere can be tolerable.
Lucy - 11 Jun 2003 19:09
didnt like the staff - far too pretentios and its only an Its A Scream pub. Wake up, don't go there
oilver - 22 May 2003 15:16
Awfull pub catering almost solely for students - Special offers for Students Student Membership etc... Why not have special offers for people who work and pay taxes?
lincoln - 17 Apr 2003 16:19
