Great Friday night atmosphere with a fantastic juke box which was turned up nice and loud by the lovely girls behind the bar (great choice of staff!!)
Called in for breakfast the morning after and it was the best cure, ended up staying all morning as ladies behind the bar were entertainment in themselves. Regulars all friendly too, I'll definitely pay them a visit next time I'm in Chelmsford

This is a good pub if you ignore 2 factors, the first being the manageress and her sour face and her instant dislike to anyone she doesn't like the look of, and the barmaid Lena who likes to shout orders rudely at her staff and seems to make a lot of people feel uncomfortable by dressed like a 16 year old even though well into her 50s.

It's definetly not a place you want to take your children, but the food is nice.

Petethespy.
I've heard of Grenada in the Caribbean but not of one in the Carebean. The Ship's menu must be fantastic if it can dream up dishes from unknown sources.....!!

I have been drinking at The Ship for over 8 years now and call in usually at early doors after work for an hour or two. A good crowd a regulars, and always good crack. On the whole the bar staff are on the ball and very friendly and chatty. Some of the real ales are OK and the Guiness is always very good. Must mention Debbie with her smile and "happy dimple", Andrea, Mark, Lena, Mike, Alison, Will, Alex and the Guv Grant. Oh, and the Chef Darren who does the best garlic King Prawans this side of Grenada in the Carebean.

My mates and me all love this pub but it started to ruin since xmas, its now open till 2am and all you get in there after 12am are drunken T*******s that do not want to pay for a club it ruins the atmosphere completly putting the cutomers on edge, even though the door staff are on th ball we still have to suffer the unwanted passers by! well actually we dont as we leave normaly venture of home with some beers with me mates but just can not stand the clearing up in the morning lol :-) Come on the ship get real with your closing times your driving all the customers away... BUT STILL A GREAT PUB.

A friendly and efficient staff make this pub ideal for many of the local business community. I've found the beers to be consistently good with upto 6 real ales on offer. The food is good value and well cooked.

I have been drinking in the ship for over ten years now so i have seen staff & customers come and go! was glad to see the back of the last manager as if you face did not fit he did not welcome you at all. the manageress and the staff now are all friendly, funny and pleasing on the eye ;-) the beer is great and they do a good selection of real ales which change frequently giving a good choice. I dont often eat there but a watch the food passing and it looks great.

A great pub that serves as a meeting place before going further into town, or for staying in just that bit later on a friday and saturday night. The staff have always been friendly. I've never been ignored. As for a previous comment about ales being flat; they're supposed to be, they're not lagers :O Obviously, not part of CAMRA lol.

I go in there regularly and the staff are always friendly. The ale is always good. Don't understand the last comment about the beer being flat, this is Essex mate, it's supposed to be flat!

They do a good bit of grub in there too.

Visited this pub as part of a family Group of fortysomethings for a Saturday night get together.

I am afraid that the Beer was all flat. There were Fireside, Old Hooky, Abbott and IPA available and every one was flat and lifeless.

How can they all be flat at the same time? I asked the Bar Staff but they didnt seem to be bothered and was offered an alternative (I think she meant Lager!). I said there is little point they (the Bitters) are all flat.

Beer was mediocre when I have tasted much better in other pubs in Essex. One of my drinking companions even drank a Magners and then wine because he really didn't like the first beer and none of mine looked any more appetising.

I shall not be going back!

Great pub, friendly bar staff, can't understand the last comment as the manager was very polite and welcoming although it did look like she didn't suffer fools that well so to get a sour faced look the last reviewer must be one!

Good pub. Sour faced manageress but good company and reasonable, though not great, beer. Certainly worth a visit in Chelmsford, you will return.

Excellent pub! great food and even better without any smoking! ps the door staff are not rude, well not to me anyway, only seems to be the ones abusing the drinking up time that get shouted at!
anonymous - 20 Jul 2007 15:14
Extremely rude door staff...closes 1am fri & Sat...door staff then ruin next 20 mins by shouting requests for you to "drink up"....are we not allowed 20 Mins?..what happened to customer awareness?

Great pub, used to be a Ridley's but since that brewery has been taken over it;s a Green king pub, still good though, serves IPA, Abbot Ale and many more beers, and they serve food which makes a very nice and reasonably priced lunch - i recommend the jacket potatoes

Good pub for a couple of swift ones on an alternative route home from the station. Avoid it when the footy's on. At least a couple of times it teetered near kicking off. Barmaids do provide a passing sideshow. Beer ain't too bad either.

Good lively pub - with pleasing to the eye barmaids !
