please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Be warned. This pub doesn't seem to give ANY drinking up time whatsoever. I popped in a few weeks ago at 10:50, and we noticed that all of the chairs were stacked on the unoccupied tables already, (with the feet on the table surfaces, how hygenic,) and so I asked how long the place was open for. The bar lady told us that they were only serving for ten more minutes and we would have to leave at 11 pm exactly. We turned around and went to the Cat and Wheel instead.

Decent pub with nice selection of Bath Ales brews. Shame all the bar staff are knuckle dragging bronx homeboy wanna bees with jeans round their arses and baseball caps at jaunty angles. You'll be lucky to get more than a grunt out of them and don't expect to be served in turn.

This pub can be awesome. The beer is well kept. Bar staff, however have a screen saver on their shiny new tills. Says "If you smile, gypsies will steal your teeth". But overall, good social pub. Utilise when starting off on a big night. Quiet pints have to be tactically executed.

Be warned - the other night I witnessed a customer getting a lecture from one of the bar staff for holding up a 10 note, being told staff there didn't like that sort of thing and if he did it he would be served last! As far as I could see he was just waiting quietly to be served. I understand that as he was on his way out the manager confirmed this bizarre rule to him! Intrigued I looked up a couple of sites on pub etiquette and they all recommended holding money up to signal you are waiting to be served - I would have thought good idea in the Prince of Wales as the service can be pretty erratic.

Wanted to post as I found the whole thing pretty shabby - if they are so offended by the sight of a 10 note then I'll be taking mine elsewhere. No punter should be treated like that. Incidentally, I noticed in the gents toilet there was some graffiti, including some very industrial language, much of which didn't look new and I couldn't see any attempt to remove it. Maybe this is less offensive than holding money up in the pub.

The picture is wrong, its of the un listed Prince of Wales in St Pauls, man.

Last time I was in the Deuchars had bits in it. Go to Cat and Wheel.

I've only been in here once recently, but my experience is quite different to the other posters. It was very busy, packed in fact, both inside and in the sizeable rear garden, but there were may staff behind the bar and service was quick and efficient.
Beer choice seemed reasonable with Bath Ales Gem, Butcombe, Deuchers IPA plus one other guest, although I can't comment on their condition as I stuck with the excellent Ashton Press.

Nice pub, but service can be hit and miss. Was in last night and the music was playing full blast last night, and made conversation hard.

If we're talking about the POW in Bishopston (on the Gloucester road next door to Maplins):

Ever since its renaissance a few years ago, this place has gone down hill relying heavily on its excellent location and reasonable size. The real ale I drank last night - the excellent Butt's Barbus Barbus was warm and on the brink.
Stench from the toilets permeating the whole pub. This place is now very pricey indeed. Conveys very little value for money and there are considerably better pubs in the area, not least the Cat and Wheel. Additionally, this pub not so long ago scored zero stars out of five for the hygiene in their kitchen on a spot check. Says it all really.

I forgot to mention, the beer almost always has very little condition to it. it's like the chef is doing the cellar as an afterthought.

The second closest pub to my house, and i go there on average twice a year. quite pricey. Very often, terrible service. once, myself and two other customers were waiting at the bar for a full minute while TWO !! staff were finishing off thier chat with mates. i actually had to interrupt one of them to get service. It may not be like this now, as there is a swift turnover of staff and management, i beleive. The same owner tho.

Nice enough place but my ale was on the turn.

Beers, excellent. Food, great. Service, erratic. Weekend clientele, infuriating.

Incidentally the picture above is the Prince of Wales in St Pauls, not on Gloucester Road

Good pub. Has a decent range of beers and ciders (draught and bottles). Good quality food and the price is just about right. Not a fan when it gets very busy at the weekend but early evenings and lunchtimes are great.

I thought this pub was better when it was a poky little local. New incarnation fell between two stools - was it a trendy wine bar or a proper pub? Seem to be moving back in the direction of proper pub recently. Beer ok, food good, service at the bar can be appallingly slow, as iyers says above.

Nice pub good beer and friendly welcome - convenient for the quality local kebab house round the corner too

This pub would be great if the service at the bar wasn't so painfully slow, but then it has been for a while and it doesn't seem to deter people going in there. Get there early on fridays and saturdays to get a pew as it is invariably rammed.
Westons Organic in bottles and Ashton Press on draught for the ciderheads amongst us!

Altogether an improvement, a failry sympathetic modernisation of what was a poky grubby local. Decent beers. Toilets were unisex when I visited! (well, except the urinals at least).

Good selection of ales and lagers and the like, went there for a Sunday roast and there were veggie and meaty options that were quite organic.

I think they do music of a week-day evening and it has quite a laid back, trendy buzz. Sawa member of Massive Attack having lunch there.

There's a bit of graffiti in the blokes loos asking "what have you done to my local?". Made it into quite a cool pub, I think.

two sides to the pub, left and right, with a narrow bit at the fron connect the two. Good selection of beer, handpump and draft, including Becks on draft! Has a wide range of punters, students to toffs and no one gives a toss who you are as long as you don't cause agro. They have good food too from the local suppliers (free range meat, local baker etc.).
