user reviews of the Sir Joseph Paxton, Locksheath

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Still using the Joe, the beer is good, most of the staff are very friendly (although there's one who always seems particularly miserable !). Food is usually good, the owner seems to love to blow his own trumpet "cheaper than Wetherspoons !", not much of a boast ! The only thing that really needs attention is the gents loo, rip it out and start again Nick !

New owners making a real effort - good, cheap food (fish and chips excellent), 3 well-kept and interesting real ales (and a fourth planned). Yes it's not the smartest pub, but it seems to be thriving and the locals are returning. Keep it up!

No complaints about prices or food quality, yes it could do with re-decoration but knock it down ???????!!!!!!!!!!
banditmike - 15 Mar 2010 15:09
Well the beers and wines have all gone up, yes normal, but the pub is a mess , it needs a good paint up , just look at the cobwebs, eat there not for me ,its a shame' knock it down, build a 99p store.they have to improve or move !!!!!

I use this pub more now than I have in the 24 years I've lived in the area, I like it's "proper pub" atmosphere.
I was very pleased when they put tvs in to show the Saints v Pompey FA cup match, that was an excellent day ! Hope they will be showing some World cup games too.

I have just visited the Sir Joseph, I must say the new owners are making a real effort. The food was great value, served quickly and looked great. I have eaten at the Sir Joseph 5 times in December and every time the food was great. The chef is the same but I think he has been re-trained, i had no problems with the food or the price / service. 2 meals for 9 really good, the wednesday quiz was great give them a chance.

Well the new guy has taken over, new menu from the 7th December which looks ok, they are advertising a Super Sunday menu, believe me it is not super, the roast potatoes are frozen ones, rubbish veg, I thought you only get peas and carrots on a roast in a cafe, problem is they still have the chef that worked there before. The Landlord hasdhis arse hanging out of his jeans, which was not a pretty sight, and the bar staff was wearing a belt for a skirt. won't be bothering to go back to eat there!!!!

So the Landlords are leaving! And where have the very nice leather tub chairs gone? Hhhhmmm perhaps just a mile up the road? Give them back landlords, they live at the pub, and have done for such a very long time......

Was very impressed with the way the pub has improved but the new landlords haven't really gone far enough, the food is "ok" at best, I would rather pay more and get quality. The pub needs re-decorating badly and the gents are still in need of a refit, also it would be nice to see more made of the garden.
I have heard from a regular that Tracey and Andy are leaving, my source was very pleased about this saying that the pub has no atmosphere and was better when Steve was there ! I have to totally disagree with this, I think Tracey has done an excellent job and believe it probably just finances that have prevented further improvement. Personally I would not set foot in the Joe should someone like Steve take over !!!!

This public house has so much going for it, sorry but dear Tracey its time to get the paint out !!!, you and andy have done a great job in making the paxton a local again, but the inside needs a coat of paint, talk to us? this is a comment not ment to cause any upset to yourselves. very kind regards spiderman , Terry

On holiday from Devon Called in at the Sir Joseph Paxton pub found staff to
be really friendly and welcoming and the appearance of the pub was very
clean. Had lunch for 4 people, food very good and price reasonable. Will
visit again if in the area. J.Haywood.

I have only lived im this area for about 5 years, this pub has had its ups and downs, but since the Tracy & Andy have taken over they have taken great steps in making the Paxton a much better place to go for a drink, a meal, their is always a smile, a hello, a chat, yes its a much better place now, try it to see. spiderman

Great pub and worth a visit for evening and food on the weekend. Bar staff are friendly and welcoming.

This is a family friendly, community pub offering quality, home cooked food at reasonable prices. There are 3 great real ales.
There is a plenty of parking available and a large, enclosed beer garden.
Regular weekly activities include Quiz Night on Wednesday at 9pm and Saturday Meat Raffle at 8pm.
They also have live music from time to time and jam sessions about once a month on a Monday - great fun!.

Obviously previous reviews are now out of date as I visited the pub this week and the manager, Tracy, and her bar staff, were excellent. The pub was very clean, well furnished and for a Monday there were quite a few regulars enjoying themselves.
Very friendly and made to feel welcome. Could not be better.
Also they have a range of food on offer and menus for every occasion and taste. Families with children are welcome and wholeheartedly caterered for.

I can't wait to tell the new owners, what's what and who's who, and especailly what a waist of space they have employed in the position of manager...name being Nikki...She is a trouble maker and likes stiring the gossip and also her husband is a dick!!
GBest1 - 28 Sep 2008 18:40
Sorry I meant "I have to SAY some of the regulars" ! Some of them are beyond saving !

banditmike - 18 Sep 2008 13:16
I hope it is fully re-furbished before it is re-opened, it needs a lot doing ! I've heard that the poorly kept beer was the main reason that people stopped drinking there, but mine was the landlord, the staff, the condtion of the place and I have to save some of the regulars ! What we need is a friendly "family" pub. Fingers crossed but not holding my breath !
banditmike - 18 Sep 2008 13:15
Apparently this pub is going to re-open early October and I've also heard they are going to continue to employ the obnoxious, rude blonde idiot...Nikki.

I hope the new owners come to their senses as she will not benefit them at all!! she was the main reason everyone stopped drinking there...
GBest1 - 14 Sep 2008 18:03
Does anyone know what is happening to the pub ? I see it's now boarded up, hope it's not turned into flats !
banditmike - 18 Aug 2008 09:49
This pub has finally got what it deserved...Closure!!!

Glad to see the power crazy manager...Niki, is now out of work...

There is a god...
GBest1 - 10 Aug 2008 21:13
I've lived close to this pub for the last 22 years and it's always been poor. There must have been 5 or 6 landlords in that time, but this one is the worst without a doubt. No food, nothing in the garden but rotting benches, not child friendly, disgusting toilets, drug dealing is a big problem. Stop press......... the landlord's done a runner and the pub is now "closed until further notice", it can only get better !!!!
banditmike - 28 Jul 2008 15:29
Decent community pub with quality Deuchars IPA, Bombardier and a guest ale. Struggling following smoking ban and has been on market for a while - now does no food and Sky TV has vanished. Watch this space.
PS I have always found the landlord to be OK. His mother however is something else...
chrisclipson - 1 Apr 2008 14:03
typical dross pub, beer is watered down and the landlord is a rude obnoxious pervert....the barmaids look like they have come from a pikeys caravan park
Peter_Lawrence - 20 Jan 2008 17:40
Great local pub with friendly punters
badboy69 - 31 Jan 2005 11:10
