user reviews of the Chequers, Orwell

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We've eaten and drunk here on two occasions and have been pleased. The menu is limited and rather on the posh burger/fish and chips/choice of steaks side of things - not cheap - but tasty and well-presented. There seems to be a few specials to add variety. The beer is interesting - good selection of hand pumps, but the guest beer I tried wasn't clean and probably hadn't been racked that long. So best to stick to the regular offerings. Other reviews seem to indicate a little minor tension between regulars and more casual users. That's probably right and the overworked lady behind the bar couldn't cope with an error on the till and suggested that she served a regular first. I politely suggested otherwise, as we were in a hurry. The regular got the hump, used foul language and stormed off into the front garden!

A good friend of mine used to live near this pub and although I visited it a few years ago, it was a great place. The beer was good and the pub full of character. It had brilliant regulars including a few elderly gentlemen who introduced me to the pleasures of G&T after losing to them at pool. I can only assume that the discontented people reviewing this pub are exactly the sort who insist on spending a jolly good day out on Bank Holiday weekends visiting pubs, which they'd never do otherwise (the sort that really annoy regular pub goers). Face it, only a total recluse would expect a pub to be quiet on a bank holiday weekend, whether its raining or sunny.

the beer is top class and so is the food. what it did not say on the other entries was that Wimpole hall had a large event on so the pub was very busy on the bank holiday and the landlord did not just hide be went to help in the kitchen where he was most needed.

Good beer and good food but don't visit on a Bank Holiday / Weekend or any other time when it is a nice day as understaffed and under provisioned leading to disatisfied customers. Had to wait 1hour 20 mins for food on Easter Monday - Landlord left staff to deal with complaints and disappeared from sight.

We called in for lunch at about 1.15 on Bank Holiday Monday, having seen their roadside billboard on the A603. The beer was fine, but after ordering it we were told that there would be a delay of about 40 minutes for food. In the event, the length of time taken for the baguettes to arrive was, at 90 minutes, ridiculous. We finally received a very grudging apology, but only after chasing after the manager for some time to complain about the delay. A sad end to what had until then been a good day out.

Friendly Pub serving food (vegetarians catered for) and real ales in a pleasant village 8 miles from Cambridge or Royston.
