As a walker who has now gratefully paused in this pub on a number of occasions for a breather and a pint or two, I heartily endorse the favourable comments here. It is a fine pub even by the generally high standards of the Chilterns. The range of ales is exemplary and the landlord is outstanding in his professionalism and welcoming attitude. In short, it is a rare gem. The only blemish is that after midday the music-free peace and quiet tends to be shattered by the arrival of foghorn-voiced golfers recounting their puny exploits on the greens.

As usual, my comments are based on a lunchtime visit. After a walk in the area which took in the delightfully-named Mop End, we arrived to a warm welcome from the landlord. Distinctly good beers were available and indeed consumed, which included the Adnams. Another party of walkers was already tucking into the food which looked good and fresh, and proved to be- try the bangers and mash! One of us had the ploughman�s, which consisted of a generous portion of fresh Cheddar cheese. The clientele was an interesting mixture of visitors (like us) and locals, making for a pleasant ambiance.
The beer garden quiet as it is behind the pub, and in any event the road is not particularly busy.

ps. I'm staggered that there is no bus service from Great Missenden or Amersham (except 59 which makes one! weekly journey on Mondays), necessitating a �7cab in either direction.

Marlow Rebellion, St Austell Tribute, Adnams Bitter, Bateman�s XB. Single L-shaped room, wood floor at bar, old stone tiles beyond, fireplace at each end, dartboard impossibly positioned (corner above large table). Beyond the bar to rear (the short bit of the L) is an open, but separate area, with large refectory style table and wooden benches, a plasma in rear corner, with the exception a a small old photo of pub the walls here are unadorned and look rather drab compared to the bar area which sports old photos, prints, plates, bedwarmer and shotgun. Opposite bar is a wooden pew with seat dividers and a wood-backed settle. Molly, the old pub labrador became quite affectionate, I hope she enjoyed the lamb doggy bag (from Red Lion) which had been intended for my own dogs, but which I left behind when the cab arrived. Very nice country exterior, grassy beer garden to rear, unlit and misty at 21:00 so I can�t describe too much but there seemed to be a field beyond and a chap at the bar said the river could be seen �with binoculars� � I think that may have been a wind up since it runs thru neighbouring pub�s back garden! Quiet last night (in total contrast to Red Lion) but a decent local feel nevertheless.

Friendly welcome from landlady who, spotting new faces, happily engaged us in conversation on a quiet, early evening start. (Society golf day for the regulars, I think). Beer good. Recently extended and about to set up three rooms to let. Cracking village location, but majority of clientele apparently comes from far and wide. A couple of friendly regulars were also keen to 'big -up' the pub and confirm it's status as 'a proper local'. No food on Sundays or evenings. As per previous postings, not to be missed..! Will make it a venue for one of our up-coming 'one-pub' pub crawls..!

Excellent country pub now in it's third generation with the same family, so obviously doing something right! Four ale engines including currently Black Sheep, Breakspears, Adnams & Cornish Tribute but known to vary at the weekends. One of my favourite pubs and well worth a visit 9/10.

lovely little pub - open fire, small bar - really very nice old fashioned establishment. well kept beer and welcoming locals - definitely drop in if passing.

This is the very best Pub for miles, if you like a good old fashioned pub. As already mentioned, there is no music, no machines, just good friendly chat. Pub was handed over to present landlord by his father so it has a long family tradition. Fires, wooden floor, dogs, and very well kept Fullers. Just what you would expect a good country pub to be.

Excellent family run pub with well kept beers and reasonably priced food (served weekdays only). Nice garden to rear. No music, no pool tables, no noisy teenagers, just a nice friendly atmosphere!
