user reviews of the Setting Sun, Brighton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I suspect that sales rocket in the summer as people come here for the sunny, viewtastic outside space rather than the beer - which is pretty average in truth - but there's usually one or two ales on with Arundel's Sussex Gold a staple.

As I live on the same road, I can indeed confirm that this pub is still there (see below). Probably the best view in Brighton from a pub garden - you can see Worthing Pier on a clear day, 12 miles away. Friendly staff, two ales which change regularly, extensive menu, and reasonably busy most evenings - I should use it more often now I think of it!

Worth toiling up the hill for the view. Beer was very good. It was very quiet when we turned up so no problems with service. The 'beer garden' is pretty spartan: the pub owner could make a lot more of this given the sea views. And I was alarmed at the outside electric heater being so close to the uPVC bathroom window. This had a bad scorch mark on it. Surely the heater could be moved or disconnected (maybe it has been - let's hope so). Hope the place is still there next year and not a smoking ruin!

Go here a lot as my girlfriend lives on same road. Had a face lift and well needed, staff are brilliant and very helpfull and chatty. Not had a meal in a while but went i did was excellent and good value. Best view from a pub in the city and good stone throw from town, infact lots of sea in the view.

i visited the setting sun on thurs 13th march, i found the staff very slow and unhelpful on some occasions. the meal although sufficient was very unpleasant so on te whole i did not have good visit.

The view does include the sea! and lots of it.
new owners very keen to win back customers. Very good food.
Bar service is slow (they seem to be new to the pub game)-but then behind the bar there is only room for one!
If they can get that sorted- they're onto a winner.

This used to be my upmost favorite pub in Brighton, then it seemed to become run down. However-great news! It seems to be have taken over by new "loving" owners with a new food menu....just in time for the summer! Welcome back

Left Basketmakers, crossed grand parade, hiked up the very steep morley & sussex streets, reached the Setting Sun(pretty much an estate pub)completely out of breath, to find a chalk board outside pronouncing the beer garden was open; it wasn't, the pub DOESN'T OPEN UNTIL 15:00 MON-THURS! The view doesn't include the sea, just the hilltop properties to the West. I can't give it any plus points & won't be back.

This is the best pub in brighton. The view is stunning and I have had many great evenings there.
The sunday roasts are the best...

A great pub with a spectacular view. Definately a good spot to go for a quiet drink, the service is not 100% but when your out for a nice drink it does the job. I go here often, friendly staff, cheap booze what else do you want!!!!

I'm afraid I have to agree with the previous review, wonderful view but that's it,very slow service, one member of bar staff on a beautiful sunny, warm Friday evening! obviously no forward planning there! I went there with some friends on the recommendation of a friend, but I think either it's changed hands recently or the owners/managers have just given up trying and are banking on the view to get people in! No food available either!

This pub has possibly the best view in Brighton. Sadly it seems to have fallen on hard times. Most locals avoid it now - Shame.
ps rating is for just the view in this case.

A great pub with a great atmosphere - like walking into your living room. After a couple of visits the barman Dan knew what my drink was! The food is great too.
