A rather anonymous pub, overshadowed by the Castle. Visited during their recent small beer fest which seemed to be struggling. Having said that, the beer quality, Everards or otherwise, was exceptional, and I'd go back.

This pub has just been refurbished and is now a very pleasant place to spend a few hours. The Everards beers are excellent, as well as a guest ale. I was surprised as they had the Original, Tiger, Beacon, Forty Bob and Flourish as well as the guest ale, which is an amazing number of real ales to have on tap all at the same time. Even more amazing was how good the Original, Tiger and Flourish were, they have obviously been trying to make a good first impression since the refurbishment. I wonder whether the bar staff will keep the pipes clean and maintain this high standard for long.
As for the rest of the pub, it's clean with some high tables, a couple of big Chesterfield sofas, and various arrangement of seating so you should be able to find what you're looking for. The smart traditional decor should hopefully attract a decent bunch of customers - I noticed there was a good mix of Students as well as more mature customers, which gave the pub a good atmosphere somewhere between lively/friendly and calm and well ordered. I didn't try the food but they've got a good selection of bar snacks!
All in all, a good pub and refreshing to see that Everards have kept it traditional yet brought it up to date.

I wonder how often the joanna in the corner gets played.

This is a pub I will never visit again. A friend and I were sitting there quietly, when (simultaneously) pints of beer were poured over our heads by a group of a dozen "yoofs" (possibly young soldiers out of uniform). As we tried to leave they beat us up outside and left us bleeding in the street, me with a broken nose and two black eyes, he with broken specs and two black eyes. And lots of kicks. Why? We don't know. "Gay-basing"? Neither of our wives believe it. "Graddy-bashing"? Possibly. The landlord saw nothing, at least when asked by the police. I didn't think it was that bad until then. However, Cambridge has always had its share of mindless violence in pubs.

Pleasant pub with food and a full range of well kept Everards beers plus a guest (Jennings on my visit). Liked this pub a lot.

A traditional Everards pub completely opposite the Castle Inn. Five hand pumps available; Everards Sunchaser, Tiger, Beacon & Original with Jennings Cocker Hoop as a guest. All the beers we tasted were in good form which covered 3 of the pumps. Looks like you were very unlucky on your visit Trainman. I did not take a note on the prices but it was one of the more expensive of the day. The pub was rather quiet for early Friday evening which left us to have a chat with the friendly landlady. A TV was available in the lounge where there was a big fire place.

Four Everards handpumps and one guest, but not one of them was drinkable! Eventually asked for a refund and left. I've a good mind to alert Everards to the poor representation that their beer is being given here. A real shame as Tiger can be a fine beer, and this pub was the only one I noticed on Sat with sport tv so the fact that there were only 2 other customers is probably further indication of poor standards.

Nice place, quiet, good food. Not as much fun now Trevor has moved on though!
