This pub isn't as nice as the Chestnut Horse further down the road, but it is more of a 'Boozer'. The staff, especially the blonde barmaid, are friendly and the locals are affable. I tried a beer called 'Green Hop' or at least I think that was what it was called!!! It was in very good condition. If you're passing its worth a visit.

Very quiet village pub, where I was the only customer. This is now a Marstons pub. Two of their ales - Ringwood Best & Marstons Pedigree were on. The landlord was friendly enough. But the pub lacked atmosphere and customers. A TV was showing Sky Sports News with the afternoon football results.

We visited late on a Sunday afternoon. Perfect beer, menu and ambience. A real old local, full of interesting nick- nacks and warm wood furniture. Friendly welcoming staff. Fab authentic PUB food, a lot of home made stuff, very reasonable for this neck of the woods. Good portions and not a 'jus' in sight! A good selection of real ales, well kept. Will definitely visit again. Dog friendly too!

My partner and i visited the pub a few days ago when we were out fishing. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and we stayed chatting to them for some time. After looking at the menu i chose the king prawns to start with and my partner chose the salmon and courgette salad. Both were presented brilliantly and tasted just as good. For mains i had the steak and ale pie and my partner had steak. The pie was lovely and you could see that it was home made, it was exactly what i needed! The steak was cooked to perfection as my partner is very picky with how he likes it. He was very impressed! On reflection i think the pub is definitely off to a good start, we're in the area again in a few weeks and we'll definitely be returning!

At last a landlord who knows what to do with this pub. Its just lovely to find reduced beer prices, a choice of Real Ale, great food cooked by the lovely Pauline, a chef of remarkable talent and invention. The pub is back to being a proper village pub with traditional pub food, good size portions very reasonably priced, a new menu just out and a fantastic wine list. The pub food here oouzzes quality and value I cannot rate it higher that 10 or I would.
It has changed hands alot but hopefully these are here to stay. Make an effort and visit.

This pub is changing hands on 12th Feb.
Should be back to normal or better than before soon.

Decent beer, reasonable food, friendly staff - every village needs to have a pub like this.

Popular local. Food quantity and quality on the decline. Reduced real ales on offer.

This use to be a favourite village inn of mine when I moved to Winchester a while ago. It use to carry at least five hand pumped Real Ales, some of which were locally brewed, and use to serve a hearty feast of well cooked and presented pub food from a huge menu that hung at the end of the bar.

But a recent visit showed that something has changed. It's not the beer that has changed - apart from a reduction in the number of real ales on offer, the beer quality still remains excellent. Nor is it the overall ambiance - the staff and locals are still friendly and welcoming. What has changed significantly is the quality and quantity of the food. True, the large menu board remains, but there simply isn't the 'wow' factor when you get your trad. pub grub. For example, you use to order a steak and get a jug of sauce; a separate side salad etc. etc. Small things that don't cost alot, but add the necessary sparkle to a meal ;-)

Overall, a disappointment but I hope that it is not a sign of things to come.

Probably the perfect pub. Superb beer. Excellent food. But what makes it is the people...just extrememly friendly, clientele and staff. There's always plenty going on, and the landlord seems to try and organise lots of events and trips for the regulars.

Bloody marvellous place! Very friendly, great beer, great grub and well priced too. Go here once and you will never bother going anywhere else again!

Unassuming from the outside, this pub offers a very friendly welcome from both the bar staff and the locals.
Wide range of well kept, reasonably priced, local real ales alongside fantastic good-value home cooked pub grub.
This pub also remains at the heart of the local community and is what every pub should be, judging by the posters advertising quirky competitions and school fete's.
You may even witness the ivories being tinkled by one of the locals.
Well worth seeking out - and only about half an hours cycle ride from Winchester.
