Now the Piston Broke. Good selection of ales on gravity but sadly the temperature of the beer was too warm. Accepted that it was a hot day but the cooling jackets should be able to cope better.

Cracking little pub that serves a good selection of real ale straight from the barrels behind the bar, it gets busy and is fairly small inside.

The barstaff were very good and the atmosphere in the pub was relaxed, plenty of "toad" memorabilia as well, a very good drinkers pub

Only popped in because i had 15 mins before the chip shop next door opened up,glad i did.Great range of ales, friendly landlady & customers.a pleasant & traditional pub.As other posters have said it can be easy to miss-but try not to as this pub is certainly worth a visit (or 2)

Quirky little pub with a good selection of ale straight from the barrel. The Itchen Valley Winchester Ale was excellent.

The Lazy toad is still a great little boozer, friendly locals, great beer, Dogs welcome and given a treat! (good, because ive got a dog!). As some other commenters have said, easy to pass this place by but dont, its one of Shorehams hidden gems

What a find it is. Neither the pub's frontage, nor its location, nor its quirky name, really do it justice and I can imagine many slip past it either not noticing it, or dismissing it as a potentially dubious seaside venue. If you do so it is your loss, for the Lazy Toad hosted a thriving and bustling set of people from a mix of backgrounds, and perhaps more surprisingly a cracking little range of real ales - drawn from the casks! No, not a pump in sight; just beer straight from the barrel. Tried the Downton New Forest and it was splendid, if a little lively when first poured, and there were at least 5 others to consider from 3 other breweries.
The decor is bizarre, in that it doesn't quite seem to know whether it's a pub, a wine bar, or a social club. But its slightly unorthodox styling suits the area and is no bad thing, especially as the ale - and the whole vibe in general - is obviously on the up.

A hidden delight, if not a hidden gem.

Forgot to mention how friendly the staff were, with some really good prices on the beers and some nice nibbles on the bar (If that wasn't enough there was a plate of garlic bread followed by chunks of roast meat!)

Nearly walked straight past this place, what a mistake it would have been, do not do the same! If I had the money this is the type of boozer I would love to create. Great choice of beer, straight from the cask, nice original surroundings (even artistic wenches on the walls). On this occasion, Entire Stout and Bishops Finger sampled of the good selection available.

Another visit to this fine establishment on sunday, another huge success. 4 lager drinkers in my group tried Doombar!!! Their second pint was another Doombar, well for 3 of them.

YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS PLACE OUT!!!

A fantastic small pub, hidden away so you must look out for it. Barmaid was extremely welcoming and friendly. Best pub in Shoreham, will be introducing a number of people to this place.

Quality and selection of Ale on offer is second to none. Last time I visited, they had Doom Bar on sale, I had been on at the father-in-law and the Lazy Toad done this pint justice.

Keep up the great work.

Easy to miss as it's not obviously a pub from the outside. But inside, a wonderful place with half a dozen beers all on gravity and some rather unusual (!) paintings of frogs on the walls. Well worth a visit.

Good Beer, friendly - as far as drinking goes this place is top, dont expect food, outside seating or any such mod-cons

Basic little high street boozer but very nice all the same. Nice and freindly (staff and customers alike) and a reasonable choice of ales, all on gravity. It was the first of the 3 pubs i visited in Shorehem-by-sea yesterday, and the best.

Lovely place. Very friendly staff.

Put me very much in mind of the Claret in Addiscombe, including the interior layout, but maybe with slightly better furnishings & light. Certainly both establishments are similarly minded about good beer and the Lazy Toad serves all by gravity from covered barrels on stillage behind the bar. 10/12(?) were set up with six being served on our visit. The ones I remember are Summer Lightning, Hopback Crop Circle & Harveys.

I live in Lancing where all pubs are GRIM!.
I often walk my dog here for a couple of interesting ales, (the dog gets given a dog chew or treat, nice touch). A very good locals boozer, plenty of middle aged conversation, prob not for the 20 year olds.
The selection of real ale is a good reason to visit, even if you dont have a huge gut and a long beard!

Undecided on this one, part of a crawl and this was number 3. Beer was fine. The place was small & busy but we managed to sit down quite quickly, stayed for two and moved on. Could be a nice local, given time.

Mixed feelings about this pub - it usually has good beers served by gravity straight out the barrels behind the bar: v. good. But sometines they are a bit warm: not so good. Friendly: good, but bear in mind it seems to be mainly frequented by visiting leathery suntanned wealthy ex-pats from Spain, or ex-ex-pats, now living 'in the country', who have a rather right wing view of the world around them. Prince Phillip would like the company: bad.

Not an old pub but it could be. It's only been open for a few years and these new pubs in a converted shop don't usually work very well but this one does.
Not a lot of younger people in here but it always seems to be busy. The locals are friendly and the beers good. We actualy had a kitty held behind the bar with about 200 in cash in a pint pot and one of the group decided to monitor it and declared that we had NOT been turned over, but we never thought we would be, it's just not that sort of place. Visit and enjoy.

This is a wonderful place to go and have a friendly drink. All the staff are efficient and friendly and are very welcoming. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good quality beer or wine with great service.

i knew it was there but still walked passed it so watch out for it as it is an oasis for ales served straight from the barrels by a very pleasant barmaid great hopback "crop circle" on when i visited it on 10th may. i will definately return

A pub that is very easily missed as it looks like a shop from the outside. Once inside it is a very nice little pub with a friendly welcome from the staff. All the real ales are on gravity and on my visit there were 4 on.A good pub for the real ale drinker.
apa - 30 Mar 2006 14:01
Deep, narrow one-room pub with 5 or 6 ales on gravity and saucy pictures of amphibians. Gets smokey.
Uncle_Dunkel - 24 Feb 2006 14:52
Always welcoming; good real ale served by gravity; honest prices; interesting mixture of clientele; what more do you want?!
Roger - 13 Jul 2004 16:56
This is exactly what being a real ale drinker is all about. A good honest pub serving fine beer on gravity! There are typically five or six beers racked up behind the bar, with a 'special' usually on for just 2 a pint. Friendly staff and a drinking club atmosphere make this a must if you're visiting the town. Occassional live music is also arranged. Food is limited to a few sandwiches available at lunchtime or early evening, but there are plenty of fine restaurants in Shoreham if you're hungry - this place is for drinking and chatting!
