I have been to the Marquis on a number of occasions, for me it is very much a student pub that is good for the older clientel aswell. i find sometimes that it is completly rammed at times where you cant sit down, or you cant hear conversations with your friends. Tables are sometimes neglected, sticky and coverd in bottles and rubbish. lager is ok, and certainly with the lager selection it is definately scottish and newcastle tied.

unfortunately to my fellow critic scottish and newcastle do not go to great lengths of investing much time in brands that are taken over. the mcewans brewing has been left to the caledonian brewers to continue and seeing as GK IPA is dirt cheap down in the south if you are not an ale brewer your standard ale will be GK.

So it leaves caledonian up north with only few national distributors doing scot cos work. but fair game to scot co for keeping the brands take overs lead to the majority of brands destroyed and forgotten.

Also for my fellow critic, unless there are two cellars which is very rare. (ie one with cellar cooling and the other without). All kegs and casks are placed in the same room. difference with lager is that it is passed through a remote cooler and chilled all the way to dispense. Ale is just one line straight from cask to pump.

All in all not a bad pub i still go there every now and then. but its not amazing.

We took another visit to the Marquis yesterday. The guest is currently Robinsons Olympic Gold. It seemed to be served much colder than I remember from the last visit. I reckon that they have the cask to near to the lager kegs as that was too cold for just cellar temperature.

Certainly the new tenants are trying hard and there is quite a large selection of available food here. The available food is clearly marked on the black boards on the wall to the left of the bar. The selection looked varied and reasonably priced however I did not try. A number of gigs were advertised for this month and the pub has Sky Sports as live rugby was being shown.

The back bar has a large mural above the large fire place. Upon closer inspection it shows a mythical attendance at a past Colchester Oyster Feast. There is also a pool table in this area as well as another wide screen TV. Outside the back there are a number of tables and benches as well as a summer house. On a damp night this seemed to be occupied by smokers. Through the car park on our exit took us to Northgate Street which was handy to take us to the Stockwell Arms.

I had a pleasant session after work one evening in here. Staff and customers friendly, and Hopback Summer Lightning and Guinness both well-kept.

A traditional pub dating back to the 16th century. Yesterday two hand pumps were on GK IPA and Hopback Summer Lightning. Unfortunately GK IPA is a permanent and the other pump is a guest. I was informed that the pub is owned by Scottish and Newcastle. You would have thought then that Caledonian Deuchars would have been the permanent beer as they own it. This would certainly be a better option than GK IPA. Nice old pub which certainly seems better than when I lasted visited. The Summer Lightning that we all had yesterday was in fine form.

Oh and the beams aren't fake - the building is really ancient!

As someone else has mentioned, this pub has recently changed hands, but it's the better for it. The food and service has improved, and there are not regular pub quizzes and other events. Plus, the football has stayed!

Popped in one day on my way into town. I think there must have been a very late session the night before as the staff seemed very vague albeit quite willing and helpful. It appeared damp and smelly too. Very disappointing beer - only GK IPA, so I won't be returning

Great pub. Beer is fine, food is absolutely fantastic value. Cannot believe more people don't eat here. Anyone I've ever brought here to eat has been really impressed, simple but great tasting. As for the "minimum wage casuals", I've always found the staff to be polite, friendly and good company. Changing hands over the next few weeks so I'm not very happy, hope it doesn't change too much. Great pub for the football as well. Where will I watch the footie next season? Hopefully still the Marquis, but we'll see.

Has a cosy feel- full of fake old beams and other pub tat which actually make it feel rather homely. At present the lease is for sale, which might expain why the beer is undrinkable and the place is being 'run' by a bunch of minimum wage casuals who clearly don't give a xxxx about the place

Top pub. You'll want to stay once you've had your first pint. Great atmosphere, nice land lord, good rocky jukebox and never any trouble. Also a pool table and GoldSchlager. Food is excellent value for money and a mean all day breakfast if great with a pint for "the morning after the night before".

Go there. Now. Do it - get in you car and go for a pint.
