CLOSED for demolition. One of four pubs lost as part of the 'Victoria Circle' redevelopment.

The pub's open - but hidden by the works and hoardings in connection with the Victoria Circle development and new Underground station.

Too busy? You're not joking. Friday at 6pm, absolutely heaving, as were all the pubs close to Victoria Station. Outside? Chainsmoking lager drinking shouties. Black Sheep beer only fair. I won't go back.
Paul_Rochdale - 12 Aug 2011 22:12
Ale always drinkable, Gets a little too busy at times but there's enough choice nearby if it is a bit clostro. Worth a look!
goodhead - 11 Feb 2011 05:15
4 ales on. Overpowering smell of the toilet too unpleasant to linger
alecstewart - 6 Jun 2010 19:18
This is my local pub, good manager and generally good knowledgable staff. Beer is well kept, food is cheap but good. 5.00 for sunday lunch with all the trimmings. Enjoyed the pub for a few years now and don't plan on moving from it. One of the best in my opinion as a non nonsense type, down to earth type of place.
thaiscubadiver - 18 Apr 2010 15:15
Run of the mill ales, London pride, youngs etc, nothing exciting ... But not in bad condition, other than that nothing to talk about, a typical pub, the same as you would see anywhere in zone 1, no originality at all. The worse thing about this place is the lardlord/manager..... Quite frankly the rudest manager I have ever met, how he got to that position in a customer service role god only knows
bedbob - 14 Apr 2010 21:39
Used to be in this pub every day when martin was landlord.went in a few year ago just was'nt the same.went in again last week still no where near as good as it was when martin ran it but there's no pub in the area as good. Its better than most the pub in the area the barman from liverpool is friendly.if you want a few pints before you go home this is as good as anywhere in the victoria to have a pint.
barman6 - 1 Feb 2010 11:27
Did you lose everything?
BestBeerBoffin - 3 Dec 2009 18:50
Horrible place to be.. My handbag was STOLEN while sitting in this pub!!! They did not even say proper sorry...

ahora - 3 Dec 2009 18:34
People wonder why pubs are dying... this kind of lazy bland place is the reason... crap service, crap drinks.... what is the point!
johnnypaleale - 23 Nov 2009 16:20
Not too bad, nothing speacial ok for a pre theatre drink or two!
steviewonder - 16 Nov 2009 15:10
Called in here last night at about ten O'clock and there were only about four customers so I was served straight away . I normally drink lager because although I much prefer ale it's a sure-fire way of getting a beer belly. As I didn't have a lot of time, I chose the Greene King bitter, which goes down much easier than lager. It was fine and I was able to catch my tain with five minutes to spare. It is quite a nice pub although, like so many in London, unaturally dark inside and there was the usual strangulated jungle noises coming from a loudspeaker although not too loud that it couldn't be ignored. Imight pop in there again when I am next in the vicinity.

Paid a first visit last night and left without having a drink.
I'd waited the best part of five minutes at the front of the queue to be served (it was pretty busy), only for the barman to first serve someone he appeared to know, who'd just arrived at the bar and who was actually standing behind me!
Despite this being unbelievably rude, I might have done the English thing, put up with bad service and stayed, but then the same barman moved to another section of the bar and served someone else who'd just arrived.
I should have said something, but I was so incensed, I just walked out.
I don't think I'd done anything rude apart from patiently wait to get a drink. And at 6'3" I'm pretty hard to miss.
Slow service in busy pubs is expected, if not always acceptable. This kind of ignorance just isn't. I won't be going back.

good backstreet pub near to mainline station and well worth a visit if passing through or coming to or from theatre opposite.the beer is surprisingly good for the area as a lot of central london pubs charge the earth for dross.this pub for london prices is very reasonable and you will get a decent pint which you can drink!the place is a bit small and awkwardly set out but it never seems too crowded and ive always got servred quick enough.beware of the stirs down to the toilets tho dangerous especially if you have had a few lol.
mintyfc - 7 Apr 2009 13:15
I found the governor in here to be very friendly; its just a shame that the tetchy barmaid ruined his good work. Pride, Bombardier, Landlord and Greene King IPA were all available from the bar along with Staropramen and some standard lagers.

There is a plasma screen in the corner, but I saw no sign of any sport advertised. Also, there is limited standing room as the pub has lots of seating probably to maximise the dining capacity during the day.

I wouldnt make the effort to return here again, but would pop in if passing.
Strongers - 26 Mar 2009 09:22
Surprisingly honest pub with surprisingly honest food, and two well served ales. And full sized urinals. Makes a change after all the dreadful makeovers
baggydave - 7 Dec 2008 20:28
In here at lunchtime following the rain at The Oval in the last test. No real ale on, but the Guiness was OK. Think the staff must have been fresh on that day though: service VERY slow and simple.
veryfasteddie - 18 Aug 2008 22:40
Had a great night in here last Thursday... enjoyed a couple of Guinness and a boat load of G&Ts and promised i would make a comment on here... You know who you are - Get in touch. Chris
Stuntman_Tequila - 18 Aug 2008 11:12
Nice enough pub close to the station, Guiness was fine.
Womble - 19 Mar 2008 09:04
Nice enough boozer, with a decent range of ales. Tends to fill up at odd times with the theatre crowd, but otherwise, normally pretty quiet, despite it's location.......

....but the main attraction is the rather 'buxom' barmaid, Donna who knows what she's there for.....
Slimtim - 15 Feb 2008 12:06
Typical central London pub - 'done up' at some stage and thus almost entirely devoid of character... Nice pint of Everards Black Pitch, though...
rpadam - 31 Oct 2007 21:13
Been here a few times. It is incredibly smokey - to the point where you can see a foot-deep layer of cancerous fumes on the ceiling.

Staff don't seem to be particularly knowledgeable about beer. Last night the waitress put a pint of Pride in front of me that resembled a watery lager, and I had to point out that it was pretty much the polar opposite to the colour it should've been. I think the pipes were being cleaned, but it made me wonder how many ignorant yanks were drinking the stuff!

Still, all in all not a bad pub. There's precious little around Victoria, but this is one of the more tolerable places.
steve5312 - 14 Jun 2007 11:39
Found this pub just after the theatre crowd had departed, was a little too busy early on but towards the end of the night, well worth it. Staff and Manager friendly and beer not to bad either. Just avoid at theatre in and out times and you'll enjoy.
DirtyPanda - 9 Feb 2007 06:51
I paid a visit to The Stage Door when in Victoria yesterday afternoon (Jan 19th) and thought the pub was okay enough without being spectacular. The place was clean, tidy and pleasant enough. My pint of Fosters was priced at the usual rate for the area, but was worryingly fizzy. This is perhaps a pub best suited for a quickie after work as I couldnt envisage myself spending a whole evening in here. It was okay enough, but couldnt put my finger on what it was lacking.
HTM69 - 20 Jan 2007 02:21
Backing this place, good atmosphere and nice beer.
Worth a visit
atsoutar - 15 Dec 2006 14:01
Stays busy throughout the day. Not one of my favourites especially as it does get quite smokey. Not complaints about the alcohol.
WaitorseBoyz - 5 Dec 2006 13:42
A mate of mine wanted to have his work leaving drinks here, so this is where I found myself early Friday evening (1 Dec). The wooden dcor looked tatty and the place was far too smoky for a non-smoker like myself. Presumably in the summer people can spill out onto the pavement, with the barrels outside a handy place to rest drinks. In early December, however, everyone was crammed into what is a relatively small boozer. It also took a while to be served. No Magners here for those who jumped on the cider bandwagon back in the summer and I am not sure if Strongbow Cirrus is an ideal replacement.

With a number of other boozers in the vicinity, I would not come here if I was having leaving drinks. Anyway, it was full of blokes, presumably from the local civil service worker population. As a result, it is a poor place to come searching for H-Files. Yet it is a stone throw away from the train and tube stations to escape dull Victoria on a Friday evening and they did have the excellent Sky Sports News on the screens here. The GORGEOUS presenter Vicky Gomersall was on as well! She always brings a grin to my face!

Searching_for_H_Files - 4 Dec 2006 10:40
Nice, I like. Very small (seems to be the thing for pubs round here, the Cask & Glass being a stunning example) but nice and cosy. Gets very, very busy before a show then empties out. Nice beer. Friendly staff. Came in for one which turned into five which is (usually) a good sign. Food sounded good on the menu and was cheap for central London although I know that doesn't neccesarily mean it tastes any good. Maybe I'll find out sometime.
Cleversaz - 18 Oct 2006 14:08
First drank here in 1970 with a pal who worked on "The Black & White Minstrel Show" at the Palace Theatre. Can't remember much except we enjoyed ourselves.

Going back recently at lunch opening time I found the interior largely gone and replaced with space for vertical drinking. The choice of real ales looked good, but only one proved to be on. It was, however, in good nick, as it should have been, given the wince-making premium pricing policy.

A pleasant place to enjoy a couple while waiting for a train, or after the show.
Alph_river - 4 Oct 2006 12:47
It's a decent little gaff this, with a bit of everything... you can get a bit of privacy in one of the half-booths, there's a decent TV in there, the staff are generally friendly. It gets very busy before during and after performances at the Victoria Palace Theatre across the road - this may or may not be a selling point, depends how much you like crowds!

Incidentally this is possibly the first pub I ever drank on my own in - on my way to a party age 17, many moons before it became a way of life!
shw501 - 11 Jul 2006 11:55
REALLY not as bad as these guys say it is. Both myself and a friend had a great lunch here. Salmon was excellent and the choice is good.Staff were brilliant and friendly as were the clientele.
Gina - 1 Jun 2006 16:13
Not as bad as it's being made to sound, it's just a standard pub, one average sized room, not a terrible selection of beers but not the best, does exactly what any pub near a theatre does and no more.
CLFINAL2005 - 3 May 2006 09:49
Was in here on Saturday Night for a few - full of Rugby Types alas - but the England game was on (though you wouldn't have known by the noise rather lack of noise they were making)

Staff were Great ! - drinks average - customer base mainly plonkers. Soon as the rugger finished they all gulped their half pints of 'real ale' and left.
BiggusDickuss - 2 Mar 2006 17:42
Better than the other reviews say it is. The beer is always on and good, the service isn't too bad either. Food is so-so, the sandwiches are a safe bet and quite good value. Better than some places around Victoria, but seek out the gems first.
BothamsAshes - 8 Feb 2006 15:26
boozing at its best, nice film of piss permanently on bog floor. Marvelous.
shw500 - 16 Oct 2005 16:37
The beer is usually good, particularly the Young's Bitter. However the last pint I had here was disappointingly below par. The food is not really recommended based on my own experience with a steak pie.
anonymous - 23 Sep 2005 14:16
Oh yes, this dump,..well,..it smells like a rank lion,.and objectively has little to offer..Remains one of my personal faves in Toria though. Mostly easy to get served, except for the hour before a showing at the theatre nearby,..and can potentially be a bit too lively at the interval,...although this is entirely dependant on the number of professionals in the audience on any given night....
kmcs - 14 Jun 2005 15:57
hands up who likes sh1tholes? yep, me too. appalling stuff this -- felt right at home.
tanderson7 - 5 Apr 2005 15:30
Seems a decent pub - Had an excellent pint of real ale, service was good and the ambience OK also.

The other customers were normal, which after just going in the Shakespeare was a blessed relief.
TheGP - 25 Oct 2004 12:25
I went to this pub a couple of nights ago to meet two mates for a few beers.
Came up from a hot Victoria Line to find the pub was just as sweltering!
After a rather nice pint of London Pride, served by a barmaid with a great smile, we had to move on to another pub to cool down.
Bruce - 10 Sep 2004 11:47
Went for a bite to eat with a couple of friends. Food arrived for two, waited 20mins for mine then ended up canceling the order. Staff seemed dim beyond belief. Beer was good though.
yam - 2 Sep 2004 23:50
nice place, recently done up, excellent staff, hot guy working there, think his name was john, great wines and beer isn't bad either for the boys
jessica - 29 Jul 2004 13:57
This is my local. I visit atleast 4 times a week. The bar staff are fantastic, It's a cosy place and it's got that old-style London Pub feel to it. More recently they've got a larger range of beers but that is not the point of this kind of bar. It's the most comfortable pub in Victoria.
Jonny Field - 26 Apr 2004 19:32
Great Pub! I really like my vists here, mainly before and after supporting Gillingham on our trips to London! Bud on Tap is great and I look forward to visting here tomorrow (Saturday 27th March 2004) as Gillingham are away to West Ham and I'll be there! Take Care, God Bless from Jack Brokenshire
Jack Brokenshire - 26 Mar 2004 14:07
Not very keen on this place. It's small, wine crap and the food rubbish.
Toilets are revolting!
anonymous - 9 Dec 2003 18:38
A very nice atmosphere a very cosy place with good music
Ellen - 25 Apr 2003 15:35
Very small and not very nice food either. They use the microwave too much
Billy - 9 Apr 2003 22:50
Nice pub. I must admit that I haven't been there since new year's eve 1999 but I liked it. Good beer range but nothing unusual.
