Our second visit to The White Horse. Food was great and a high quality. Would highly recommend this place to all our friends. Have no hesitation in coming back

The White Horse is a fantastic family pub. The food is well above average pub fare, but does not go in for gastro pub prices. There is a great, kid friendly garden with a small menagerie (chickens, goats), a bouncy castle and plenty of room to run around. The proprietors are friendly and very welcoming and the staff has always been attentive.

They do a good bit of special events, which are always well attended. The White Horse really makes an effort to attract business and the regularly full car park is a testament to its hard work.

I only have two complaints- one, it's a Green King pub and I'm not a fan of their beer. However, there is almost always a guest ale and I can live with Abbott if I have to. Secondly, it can be hard to get a table as they are so busy. Book early and plan for a leisurely meal- it's worth the wait.

Last note- try the White Horse burger- best burger I've had at a pub bar none.

We visited the White Horse on Saturday evening - 9th April.

We were eventually given our menus and advised 4 items from the main courses were not available. One of which was the risotto - one of only two vegetarian options. We were then advised there was only 1 portion left of the other vegetarian option. I was embarrassed for one of my guests who was vegetarian. Whilst it had been a gorgeous day and the pub had been busy, this was not acceptable.

The food itself was usual pub fair and nothing special. The service however was very poor. The girl serving us was completely uninterested, only half clearing the table before she left to go and chat to her friends behind the bar.

Very disappointing overall - will not be coming back.

We stopped at the White Horse impulsively early one evening, having never been there before and there being no cars parked outside we did not have high expectations and tentatively opened the front door fully expecting to beat a hasty retreat, what a pleasant surprise we got.
A warm friendly welcome, two staff behind the bar (no pub with low turnover is going to have that number on duty at 6pm so this was a promising sign), a few people sat at the bar looking very at home, many of the tables occupied and most of the remainder were reserved. We decided to stay for a quick half and left 3 hours later having had a thoroughly good evening and a lovely impromptu meal out. Since then we have been back regularly and have taken visiting family members there.
We cannot recommend the food highly enough or the atmosphere, Neil and Kate (proprietors) are excellent hosts and have created a wonderful pub to visit either for a swift drink, a long night out, or something in between.
It has now become our local despite not being just down the road.

I'm afraid I cannot share the negative views of pubfan247. During a one week business stay in the UK I spent most of my evenings in the White Horse and I never got the impression of being served microwaved or convenience products. Whenever I looked into the kitchen - there are two windows pointing to the patio and garden area - I saw Neil (owner) and his assistant cook instead of using a microwave.

Also the toilets were clean all through the week. I got the impression that the washrooms are being cleaned and checked regularly and never saw anything like dirt, dust or any other thjings that could be called "dirty".

I cannot comment on the beer price though as I have no comparison. The relevant factor for me was that the pints were signifantly cheaper thant at home in Germany. :-)

Under New Management! Overpriced Greene King Beer - Dirty Bathrooms - Microwaved Meals - Don't bother...

Dropped into this pub for a spot of lunch whilst driving south via an 'off the beaten track' route.
Instant friendly greeting - admittedly there weren't many people inside as it was a sunny September Friday lunchtime and most were on the rear (covered) patio.
The interior immediately struck us as clean and bright.
Lots of real ales on tap, didn't have time to determine whether all of them were both working and drinkable.
The food was enjoyable with lots of local produce being utilised.
We'd only planned to have a 'lite bite' but were tempted by the menu into staying for something more substantial.
After starters, we had a venison steak and a lamb burger which we both really enjoyed.
We'll definitely be visiting the White Horse again.

The White Horse in Hermitage is a breath of fresh air in the area; it is a nice clean friendly pub with great service and food. I probably eat there once a month or so and the choice on offer is great not too much that you cant decide but a good choice of steaks, fish, pasta and burgers. The best thing on offer there is the ribs; meat just falls off the bone and comes with great homemade BBQ sauce!!
I am a fan of this place mainly because the owners are very friendly the staff always look happy and are very helpful. In the last three years I have been going to the White Horse I have never seen any trouble, or even drunkenness. This is probably why the place is usually filled with women eating and the older gentlemen drinking their real ale! Best things about the White Horse apart from the friendly service is that they have peroni on tap, fantastic bangers & mash in the winter and a fantastic patio & garden for the summer.
All in all I wish there were more places like this around.

Like the correspondent below, I was asked if we were ok for drinks almost every 5 minutes. I know you have to make a profit, but for gods sake, let me get at least 3/4 of the way down a drink. Food was ok, menu nothing special but portions were big.

Seems a bit of a waste of time allowing smoking again, given that the ban comes in next summer. One of the major plus points used to be that it was non smoking.

Now under new Management AGAIN! (perhaps that says it all for the likelyhood of this pub lasting)

Apparently they are going to turn it into a kind of 'Grill House'.....so we'll hold judgment on the food..but it don't sound too good for the 'pub' aspect. No change in decor since the last owners..so it's still nice inside. Used to be non-smoking..which was a plus point. Now it's got ashtrays on every table. (oh dear) Still has huge garden /field where the children can play safely and far enough away from the rest of the pub not to be annoying.

Visited recently, only one of the 'real' ales working. Staff pleasent and polite...but kept getting 'in-yer-face' they have obviously been told to walk around the garden and pub asking if they can get more drinks for you. My companion and I were there for a quiet few drinks. We were asked 9 times (by different staff menbers) If we were 'ok' and wanted more drinks.

Yes..I was fine...if I wanted more drinks I'd have got them myself...now pi** off...thank you.

On top of all this, the landlord circled us and asked 3 times if we would be dining with them tonight?

"why thank you...upstairs after they've all gone home is it?...that's very kind of you"

We were there for under 2 hours, we had four pints each, we were asked a total of 12 times various questions by the staff. that's nearly 1 question every 8 minutes. ARRGGHHH!!!! Leave your clientel alone mate...

Good pub if you want that 'hasseled in a country pub feeling'

To be fair..they ARE new....and are about to be caught between the old 'is it a pub or is it a restaurant?' question that every previous owner has fallen foul of.

Time will tell on this one.

A little diamond of a pub. Recently refurbished and now under new management. This one is really trying hard. Good food, varied menu, Budvar on tap, huge garden for the kids....nice location. Pub games, newspapers to read, quiet corners, nice staff...what more could you want?
