The George Inn, Eartham

Eartham is a 'Brigadoon' village - time has passed it by. It does have a bus service but you have to book the bus the day before and even then it is subject to variables. You may wonder how a pub in such a place can survive these days but there is obviously a reasonable local trade but others would have to come by car. All the more reason therefore for the pub to stock non-alcoholic beer but it had 'run out' so I settled on a pint of ginger beer to quench my thirst after walking and before driving. The bowl of soup (which cost £5.25!) that I asked for took over half-an-hour to arrive during a not-very-busy lunchtime and had I not paid for this when buying the beer I would have got up and left. Nice welcome but sloppy service. I hope not to find myself in Brigadoon again.

The White Lion, Soberton

A bijou. Pretty pub near Soberton Church. And a 'Proper Pub' where there is cosy space for drinking and a separate area for eating but both served from a central bar. Warm welcome. Roaring log fire in winter. Trestle tables under colour umbrellas in summer. Wide but not OTT pub menu. Doom Bar on draught. Immaculate loos. Well recommended.

The Partridge Inn, Singleton

A very 'pleasant pheasant' set in a pretty village at the foot of the South Downs midway between Chichester and Midhurst and convenient for the nearby Weald & Downland Open Air Museum and for the Goodwood Horse Racing and Motor Racing circuits. Popular with walkers. Good space inside and large garden with trestle tables when the weather is fine. Reasonable pub menu (which I didn't try) and rather over-priced Fullers Ales. Less pretentious than the 'Fox Runs Free' at nearby Charlton.
