Apt Bar, City Of London

I fell into this bar last Thursday night after kicking-out time from Ye Olde Watling. It's your standard City late-bar/club with most people office workers on a night out. Busy, drunken, but generally good natured. Friendly doorstaff, which is a pleasant novelty.

The strongest impression was how expensive the drinks are. I ordered a couple of G&Ts and got a bill for �23. I certainly did not say "I'd like two double Tanquerays and tonic, please" but that is what the receipt said - so either their standard bar-staple is ridiculously expensive, or else I got ripped off by the barstaff.

Either way, I won't be going back.

The Spurstowe Arms, Hackney

Dropped by late one evening for a chat with an old friend.
The place was almost empty but the music was belting out so loud we could barely hear one another speak. I can only assume it was turned up for the bored barstaff.
Unwelcoming, loud, empty, cold, uncomfortable, over-priced beer. What's more to dislike in a pub?
And if you fancy a burger costing nine quid, this is the place for you.

Quite what the owners think they're doing is beyond me. Maybe I don't have their vision. Doubtless the place is pouring money down the drain, so all we can do is wait until it turns back to a normal, friendly pub with decent food.

Jaw-droppingly rude staff.
�3.60 for a pint of flat lager.

Avoid.
