Don't pop in here if you want a quick pint - the ratio of working bar staff to customers is about 1000 to 1 - best to order a whole nights worth of booze in one shot as you'll probably not get served again before closing time.

Food is OK though and not a bad bet for lunchtime as students tend to do their drinking here in the evenings.

We used to go to this pub a lot, but stopped making it our preferred evening retreat for a number of reasons: it gets pretty smoky, even for smokers; the beer, whilst varied, can be pretty flat and we've had more than a few bad 'end of barrel' pints that a vigilant landlord should be able to avoid (in our humble opinion).

The final death knell was the installation of a 32" TV in the corner, which, to our minds, totally ruined the no-music atmosphere, and on a couple of occasions, almost made it impossible to get to the bar because of the crowd of gawpers gulping their lager.

On the flip side, I get the distinct impression the landlord isn't much in favour of the TV either, so why it is there is a bit of a mystery.
