The Red Lion, Handcross

I thought we had visited on an off-day but from the previous comments it looks like every day is an off day for this pub.
It's off to a bad start with a Pay-and-Display car park. I can see why they've done it to deter shoppers, but although you get your car park fee returned at the bar it's not a cheerful start to an evening out.
The ambience is OK - Chef and Brewer Olde Worlde pastiche - and the menu promises much but doesn't deliver.
Example; one chicken meal was lukewarm (a dangerous practice) and we sent it back. It came back having been microwaved so the chicken flesh was like rope. All the other meals were merely passable pub grub, although the menu reads as if the food is more adventurous than that. It is just about OK. That is all.
Service was S - L- O - W.
My advice - drive down the M23 another 3-4 miles and turn off at Slaugham for The Feathers.

The Half Moon, Putney

For anyone who doesn't know, this is a music venue of the highest order, so it gets packed to the rafters in the evenings. Be warned, stranger, it's not the place to go for a quiet pint.
Trying to get served when there's a gig on is a bit of a scrum - but the atmosphere is worth it.

The Jolly Coopers, Hampton

A proper English pub with a barman / landlord (?) who knows how to run a pub. Highly recommended.
