The Beach Hut, Watergate Bay

We went on a rainy day in June whilst on holiday and was surprised it was very busy at 11:55am. Obviously the lunch time menu was popular. It was so refreshing for it to be a child friendly place - well it is Cornwall - beaches, tourists = families. Child seats available and crayons and activity books given out to all children. A wonderful childrens menu - hallelujah!!! Grilled local fish, new pots and peas, penne with tomato sauce and parmesan, sole goujons - yippee!! Proper food and an alternative pudding to ice cream available. Even the cutlery given to the child was small size cutlery. So impressed. Excellent food - my only problem is that I ordered a bean burger not a beef burger but I was so happy I didn't have the heart to tell them - hence the rating on 9 and not 10.

The Cornish Arms, St Merryn

Our first thoughts on entering this pub were disappointing. The exterior looks quaint and pretty but the interior is very rough and ready with one side resembling a school dining room with the tables laid out in a uniform manner. Definitely not a dining experience but pub grub. We found a table and realised that the menu had Rick Stein on the bottom. We were totally surprised as the pub had no airs and graces as you had at the Padstow businesses. The childrens offerings were ok but not great so we asked for a small portion of ham, egg and chips which they did and charged us less which was very obliging. My husband was surprised to only get lemon sole goujons for his money - no chips - only salad and mayonnaise. He was bored with them by the end of the plate. I had the steak pie which was lovely. I would say that the atmosphere was unrelaxing as the pub was so busy on a Tuesday night. The Rick Stein name obviously attracting the crowds when we were falsely attracted by the lure of the quaint exterior. Would I recommend it - yes out of season maybe if you are passing.

Falcon Inn, St Mawgan

Nice setting and lovely pub. Very popular and friendly. One big annoyance though. Why or why do pubs only offer children ice cream all the time when there are lovely desserts on the menu. Why can't they have apple pie, cheesecake, etc. Why can't a half portion be programmed into these computerised tills. My daughter was sick of being offered only ice cream all week. It was nice to see a pasta veg dish on the childrens menu though so well done with that one.
