The Queens Head, Harringay

Interested to see what they make of this - if it ever reopens. The chances are it will be turned into (yet another) betting shop...

The Garden Ladder, Harringay

This time last year it seemed inconceivable that any place could replace the Salisbury in my affections. Admittedly, until the Garden Ladder opened, there wasn't much of a selection of other drinking establishments in Harringay. However, since this place opened late last year I can count on one hand the number of times I've been to the Salisbury. A great unpretentious little bar with very friendly staff and a grown up clientele serving fantastic food at very reasonable prices (did you hear that Salisbury managers?). They have real ale (unfortunately Directors is the regular, but generally they have at least one guest, more often than not drinkable) along with the normal selection of Eurofizz. I even like the music - but I have very eclectic tastes and tend to listen on random - which is exactly what they do here (you can see the computer running iTunes behind the bar). They've even got a smoking area which doesn't involve standing on Green Lanes - admittedly small, but pleasant enough even if the single bench arrangement does remind me of a bus stop somewhat.

The Salisbury, Harringay

I'm currently looking for a new house and one of the key criteria in my search is how far the it is from the Salisbury. That's how much we love this pub... Fantastic on a Sunday afternoon with a pile of newspapers or great on a weekday evening for a pint in a nice atmosphere - the Salisbury is an oasis in the pub desert that is Harringay. They do a fantastic pint of Pride (a pity they only do Fuller's, but luckily I'm a fan), and the range of continental beers is top notch too, without a Stella or Kronenburg in site. It really is worth paying that extra 20p a pint to avoid the Weatherspoons crowd (have you been to the Tollgate??). Can't say I've ever had a problem with the bar staff - compared to other pubs where you tend to get ignored in favour of locals, the service has always been tip-top (although I guess I'm a local, so maybe someone else is being ignored in favour of me). The food is over priced though, and hasn't always been up to scratch - although it's now more consistent since they got a chef to stay more than a couple of weeks... Did I say how much I love this pub?
