The Spotted Dog, Epping

The pub seems like it's closed down. There's still a sign outside advertising Sunday roasts and the like, but the place was closed up, the leadlight window on the door was broken and - peeking through - the place was empty. The lawns were very overgrown too.

Pity... I'd just walked 16km through Epping Forest and was soaking wet from a sudden downpour and was gasping for a pint. :-(

The Toby Carvery, Snaresbrook

I went here for a Sunday lunch, just before Xmas. The place was manic but the staff were very efficient, friendly, and patient (my friend was indecisive about what to order, after we had said we were actually ready...).

People need to remember that this is not some gastropub with haut cuisine and silver service; it's a Toby Carvery. If one sets one's expectations at the correct level ("cheap and cheerful", and it was both!), then it's a fine place to go. The carvery buffet was better than I expected, and I rather enjoyed it (except for eating too much: oops. But that was my fault).

My expectations were well met, and indeed I am off there for lunch and a couple of pints again today.

Speaking of pints: they DO have a guest ale on tap there, contrary to what someone else said. But the rest of the beer selection is fairly ordinary, I will admit.
