Axe and Compasses, Aythorpe Roding

Excellent pub food and some brilliantly chosen local ales and ciders make "the Axe" a popular place. The menu is intricate without being stuffy and deals (2-4-1 fish day on Weds or pie and a pint Tues) make the pub very popular. There is a good selection of beers and wines but the ever changing casks behind the bar make sure there's lots of variety.
The only problems seem to be it is regularly fully booked up and isolated so someone always has to drive. If you can handle those minor problems then there are few better places that call themselves authentic pubs.

The Black Lion, High Roding

The Black Lion a very good, friendly, local drinking pub in the heart of High Roding. The pub has lots of character and a good selection of lagers and ales. The pool table has gone and the 'Sports Bar' is made out for watching big sporting events. The food is good pub grub. Well worth a short stop when driving between Ongar and Dunmow.
