The Waggon and Horses, York

What a splendid selection of fine ales! Eight handpumps but only managed six of the selection over two sessions. I don't know what this pub was like before undergoing an extensive refurbishment but what is there now shows a tasteful regard of existing features with the addition of some lovely letting rooms (well, I only stayed in one and I expect the others are to the same standard).

Paul and Mandy are very welcoming as are the staff I met. You can be well fed here as well as being well watered. If you are travelling by bus, there's a stop right outside so you can virtually fall off the bus and into the front door.

I highly recommend this establishment. Surely most real ale drinkes canm find satisfaction here.

Cheers! - Mike Higham

The Plough, Smallford

This is not my local, although I wish it was! For me, real ale is what a pub is all about. I have nothing but praise for the excellent condition of the ale during recent visits.

The pub is a little gem tucked away and traditional in character.

This is a good venue for the cyclist coming along Alban Way cycle path then across the field path from the old Smallford station. The good food and excellent ale are fitting rewards on arrival. Well worth a visit!

The Garibaldi, St Albans

On Friday, 9 May 2008 I probably had the last drinkable pint of Pride served here. The next order was on the way out and the following one opaque. That was it. No other beer on draught, no Guinness, no lager, no cider - in other words f**k all. The place was shut the next day and has remained so ever since.

It has been sad to see this decline through falling standards, disinterest, and an obvious departure of regular clientele to alternative establishments close by.

I have cherished the excellent Pride here over many years. On that last evening there young Katie was embarrassed to find there was nothing to offer. Always a friendly smile and pleased to be of service - I hope she finds some other place to look after her customers in such good style.

This hostelry is likely to be yet another doomed as a pub.
