The Approach Tavern, Bethnal Green

Nearly £18 for 2 pints of Pride, a non-alcoholic beer and a gin and tonic. Wouldn't have minded so much as pretty lively atmosphere but sullen, unhelpful bar staff informed me that I should have specified bottled tonic when ordering the round when I objected to being given tonic from the gun and wouldn't give me the alternative - er, not at that price, love! Plenty of competition locally now so won't be going back anytime soon.

The Edgar Wallace, Temple

This really is a proper pub. The staff are exceptionally helpful, informative and very good at their jobs. Some cracking beers - favourites like Crouch Vale and interesting less well known brews - and an interesting selection of vintage advertising on the walls. My friend got lost on the way there and the charming barman was so helpful - even giving excellent directions to her on my phone and then offering to go and fetch her when she was too stressed out to listen to him properly. He was sooo patient! Makes me proud to be a Londoner when you have little gems like the Edgar Wallace to go to!
