The Tavistock Inn, Tavistock

This pub has been under new ownership for 9 weeks now and is in the Punch Taverns group of pubs. We had a very pleasant couple of pints of Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale there (the others were St Austell Tribute and Sharpe's Doombar) and got chatting to the landlord, who is originally from Manchester but has been in Devon for a long time. He has the right approach to running a good pub, and wants it to be a welcoming, friendly pub for locals and visitors alike, and is actively discouraging the local "yoof" unless they are very well behaved. The decor is quirky and eclectic, with books and newspapers and a pool table, and a real fire. They do basic pub food all day (we didn't try as we already had a table booked elsewhere). We loved it and would make a beeline for it next time we are in Tavistock - they deserve to succeed!

The Bishop Blaise, Derby

We visited this pub at the weekend on the strength of it being in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. We tried two of the Burton Bridge beers, which should have been delicious, but we were disappointed. One was in very poor condition and the other was served too warm. Nice modern interior.

The Falstaff, Derby

Only just off Normanton Road - but you have to know it's there! Once you do find it, you will be glad you did. Their own beers are very nice, although maybe not quite hoppy enough for my taste and are well worth searching out. Very friendly on both sides of the bar - we were made to feel very welcome and only departed reluctantly.
