George's Meeting House, Exeter

It's a 'spoons. Expect the 'spoons experience, which has it's well-known ups and downs. On average, the best of the 'spoons in Exeter.

A plus for this one is the pair of balconies that most people don't bother with, meaning there's usually a quieter corner available. Fewer of the usual 'residential drinkers' than normal too.

The Hour Glass Inn, Exeter

We visited on a Saturday afternoon with a couple of friends for a couple on the way back from the city centre...

This is cosy little pub a few minutes stroll from the city centre. Although there's not much room, we were able to get all 4 of us around a table and thoroughly enjoy ourselves playing a board game we had with us and leafing through the Encyclopaedia Britannica running along one wall (the highlight of the general pub tat lying around).

There were about 4 hand-pull ales on, but we stuck to Otter Bitter, which was on a good value 4-pint jug offer. It was very well kept, and my longest wait at the bar was while a clean jug was retrieved from the back. The staff were friendly and fitting the atmosphere well.

At first glance, Exeter city centre lacks good pubs. If you go looking, you can find gems like this one.
