The Eagle Ale House, Clapham

Always a pleasure to visit & imbibe - well-kept Loddons Hoppit, Brakspears & Westerham SPA on recent pilgrimages. Also Tribute, Harveys & Westerham Freedom. Excellent choice for my palate and no fear of ever getting a hot glass here - unlike some other real ale establishments who should know & adopt greater customer care - as should CAMRA who in my opinion should be concentrating on this aspect rather than their petty "Full Pint" campaign - preferential to lose a fraction of an inch of ale (which most bar staff are only too willing to top up anyway) rather than have an entire pint ruined by being served in a hot glass and/or having to suffer abuse for politely pointing out the hot glass to the publican!

Aragon House, Parsons Green

Additional handpump did not materialise and very little real ale now.

The Durell, Fulham

This has got to be one of the worst pubs that it is ever ones misfortune to visit both in terms of management and clientele.
We went here to watch the England v Andorra football match tonight and we were initially pleased to occupy an unreserved table set back from the large screen. However after more than 40 minutes in situ watching the match we were informed by a customer that the entire area had been booked for a private party - and yet there was no prior indication of this or that our table had been reserved. Accordingly and quite naturally upon being requested to move by the same customer following a late influx of his friends also trying to move us on and blocking our view of the screen we held our ground only for my colleague to be eventually told by a bar person that unless we moved the pub would refuse to serve us - although at least this never transpired doubtless as they realised their mistake in not previously reserving our table or indeed the area. We held out at our table until the end of the match despite the apparent party-goers blocking our view (they clearly had no interest in the match whatsoever).
However following the end of the match we enquired of other customers at adjacent tables as to whether they were part of a private party - 14 people that we asked near to us in the same area denied any knowledge of a private party or being a part thereof!!
Needless to say this is not a pub that we shall be returning to in our area and we will definitely be advising other locals against visiting in future. We shall be writing in to the owners and the licensee(s) to complain - but the latter may prove difficult as they do not apparently conform to the UK licensing law in displaying such information above the door to the premises!!

The White Horse, Parsons Green

Thoroughly enjoyable American Beer Festival last weekend. First time that I have ever seen, either here or in USA, such an extensive range of Sierra Nevada beers available on handpump together with a number of others seen for the first time - all of which I gather had been specially imported and casked for the occasion. Excellent live music on all three days including The SPIKEdrivers, Incredible Blues Puppies, Steve Morrison et al and line dancing. Also very good hog roast. Looking forward to their next beer festival which I believe will specialise in Belgian beers. In the meantime I will continue to enjoy the superb Hobsons Mild!

The White Horse, Parsons Green

Excellent range of varied real ales from the smaller independent micro-breweries with Harveys Best Bitter as a regular (and still at 2.50 per pint!). Also both a regular mild and porter available. The milds have been some of the best around including Hobsons, Jennings, JW Lees, Crouch Vale and Harveys - all superbly kept. Please keep up the good work.

The Temperance, Putney Bridge

Very welcome addition of Timothy Taylors Golden Best as a regular beer on handpump in company with the Landlord. Also absolutely superb guest mild, Moorgate Black Cat, which I am also hoping can become a regular here - if not I suggest ale lover's sample this gorgeous mild before it all goes or before I drink it all!

The Telegraph , Putney Heath

This lovely pub on Putney Heath (NOT Putney Common) is currently undergoing a change of ownership (following recent Administration of all of the pubs owned by the previous PubCo). Nevertheless the manager, Nick Stafford, and his staff have been putting on a very brave face in this uncertain climate by continuing to maintain the high standards that they have achieved since the extensive and costly refurbishment some two years ago. Their untiring efforts have included continuation of their support for the very popular Friday live acoustic blues nights and the establishment of a successful quiz night on the first Tuesday of each month. It is to be hoped that their services during this very difficult personal time for them will be appreciated by customers and new owners alike. If there has been the occasional lapse I for one am quite prepared to put it down to the exceptionally stressful uncertainty under which the staff have been having to work for the past few months. This is one of my very favourite pubs and I will continue to support it in any way that I can. This country is in grave danger of losing a whole culture with the alarming closure of an average of four pubs every day - The Telegraph must not be allowed to suffer a similar fate.

The Queens Head and Artichoke, Regents Park

In view of the past reviews here of this establishment I was filled with trepidation at being invited here for a birthday lunch yesterday (Sunday). However all of my fears were put to rest. Although the first pint of Adnams that I ordered was towards the end of the barrel it was readily changed with an apology and replacement with the barman making sure that the glass was suitably cool. Henceforth my wife and I were looked after with two excellent value bottles of bordeaux with the meal. Furthermore I could not fault the meal despite my concern at the large number in our birthday party and in consequence the cooking of the beef to our preference of medium rare. To our delight the beef was properly served medium rare (not medium and not rare) and my starter of pea and mint soup was one of the best that I have had. Although not on the menu my wife and I finished our meal with Afrogato which was served without any fuss. The food, drink, hospitality and service for such a large party was commendable. My wife and I will definitely return as will I am sure most of our party. The prices, although not cheap, are very reasonable for the quality of fare.

14 Apr 2008 20:17

The Globe on the Lake, Alresford

Visited here yesterday lunchtime with my wife. Excellent Itchen Godfather on handpump - also Brakspear, Ringwood & London Pride available. Good fresh local fish and very hospitable reception. Park in the main square and walk to the pub as it is impossible to park outside. We will definitely return.

1 Apr 2008 13:18

The Ashburnham Arms, Greenwich

Always make a point of visiting this pub when visiting the area (by far the best real ale pub that we have found here over a considerable number of years). Serves easily the best pint of Master Brew that I have recently experienced -taste-wise the most reminiscent of the magnificent old heavily dry-hopped ale of many decades ago (why can't other Shepherd Neame pubs get the Master Brew tasting this good despite the brewery for some years now having changed to only lightly dry-hopping the brew?). Superb landlord recommended us to a very good establishment in the area (The Hill) for an excellent Sunday dinner (missed the good value Sunday lunch here) - many thanks - see you again soon.

17 Mar 2008 00:55

The Hill, Greenwich

Quite a revelation in a good area surprisingly deplete of good dining experiences. Went here for the first time tonight (Sunday evening - even more of a difficult gatronomic day in this area!) upon recommendation from the superb governor of the Ashburnham Arms - best pub in the area. The Hill is a thoroughly enjoyable experience - good food, good wine, good service, good decor with no pretentions - and reasonable prices. Easily the best dining experience we have had in this area - we look forward to returning. This is not really a pub but a very good restaurant in an area where we have for some time now been looking for somewhere good to dine (especially on a Sunday evening).

17 Mar 2008 00:24

The Idle Hour, Barnes

Totally agree with JLT hereunder - excellent speciality last night of Alaskan King crab - a rarity on any menu - but Stephen, the governor, has tracked down a supplier in the UK so that he can share his personal passion with his customers - for which I and my wife could not have been happier gorgeing on the 30 dish for 3 to 4 persons. This really is a gem of a place - well worth enduring the difficult parking nearby in order to visit. My wife and I cannot wait for our next Alaskan King crab there!
And I don't regard 10 for a starter and main course (including bread & butter) as expensive for the regular menu!

19 Feb 2008 18:43

The Eagle Ale House, Clapham

Thought I knew all the(sadly)few good pubs in the area but somehow this one escaped me - until last Saturday. Quite a revelation despite the football - comfortable surroundings, good customers, service and staff plus an excellent range of lesser known real ales at reasonable prices and NOT served in a HOT glass!! Will definitely return, probably for the rugby this Saturday.

19 Feb 2008 18:15

Trafalgar Freehouse, South Wimbledon

Congratulations on winning CAMRA SW London Pub of the Year award - well deserved. Good selection of well-kept real ales - and NO hot glasses thank goodness!
Looking forward to Harveys Mild coming soon here when I can get a pint served in a cold glass (unlike my unfortunate experience at the Royal Oak in Borough).

14 Feb 2008 14:14

The Cock and Hen, Fulham

What a crying shame that they have sold out to Youngs but I will still frequent the pub until the changeover in March and until then thoroughly enjoy the excellent Adnams Old Ale as well as their ownbrews on handpump which will doubtless be replaced by Youngs/Wells insipid beer!
Congratulations however to the excellent bar staff including the lovely lass from Estonia who knows all about not serving ale in hot glasses - unlike the apparently longserving barmaid and co-licensee at a well known Harveys establishment in Borough!

11 Feb 2008 20:51

The White Horse, Parsons Green

For this regular it was a welcome return, after all these years, of the White Horse showing the Six Nations Rugby Internationals. Very civilised and convivial afternoon bringing back past enjoyable memories of watching the rugby here in pre Mark Dorber days when Chelsea football fans were banned from this pub by Sally!
Apparently due for refurbishment later this month when further handpumps will be added with plans for a good regular Mild thereon. The changes here as far as this customer is concerned are most welcome and it is apparent that the management are trying hard. One of the latest pleasures is the introduction of the excellent draught Aspalls cider. Harveys bitter still the best in town at 2.50 per pint!

4 Feb 2008 20:22

The Royal Oak, Borough

Oh dear! What in Harvey's name has happened to this pub? Has it changed hands?
It has always been a pleasure to visit this pub and receive a warm welcome from the hospitable landlord, Frank, and swap the occasional story and beer
with him. However, shock and horror upon my return here with my wife yesterday (Sunday afternoon at 5pm) for another anticipated pleasurable visit only to be confronted by a surly foul-mouthed man across the bar professing to be the Licensee and repeatedly shouting at us to "f... off and get out" whilst I was trying to politely explain to the barmaid that the bottom of a glass retains the heat for quite a while after the glass has come out of the glasswasher. My explanation was regrettably necessary as the barmaid (whom I had never seen in here before) had accidentally served me a pint of draught mild in a hot glass despite my request when ordering for her to please make sure that the bottom of the glass was cold - a request which the barmaid unfortunately did not appear to understand.
Apparent attempts by the other barman to calm down "the Licensee" were to no avail and my wife and I accordingly departed amid further tirades of "f... off and get out" from the professed "Licensee" who refused to supply his name or cease swearing. A most unpleasant experience for my wife and I tinged with sadness at the rapid decline in the standard of service at this hithertoo much-loved pub.

4 Feb 2008 13:33

The Queens Head, Newton

Great pub. Had some excellent pints of Adnams Old Ale (4.1%) straight from the barrel the other lunchtime together with some of the best rare roast beef and ripe stilton sandwiches I have had anywhere. Also delicious beef dripping on toast - now where do you ever see that now? My wife had the Crones cider and the soup which she thoroughly enjoyed. Friendly & hospitable staff. Just wish it wasn't seventy miles away - but we will return!

24 Jan 2008 21:32

The White Horse, Parsons Green

Thoroughly enjoyable old ale festival the other weekend (thankfully with not a single plastic glass in sight). Excellent Hobsons Mild and full size skittles alley together with other traditional pub games specially brought in for the occasion.
As a local the welcome extended by the new management is refreshing and as a near pensioner I am delighted that the Harveys has been maintained at the very competitive price of 2.50 per pint.
One of the best real ale public houses in London (except on Chelsea football days!) with the new management receptive to trying new real ales not seen here before or not for a long time. The food is pretty good too.

2 Dec 2007 21:50

The Salutation, Hammersmith

We went in here for the first time last Thursday evening. Very hospitable caring landlord serving behind the bar dispensing very good pints of Fullers' Discovery served at a perfect temperature. Very pleasant atmosphere and lovely secluded garden with nicely arranged intimate seating sections with overhanging foliage. A delightful oasis in the otherwise rather tired pubs along King Street and thankfully Fullers (unlike Youngs now) have kept this pub traditional and not refurbished it into an overpriced pseudo gastro pub. We will definitely return.

21 Jul 2007 11:44

The Grapes, Wandsworth

We went in here after the Youngs AGM - still the best pint of Youngs anywhere (and about the only pub now where I will drink the Youngs particularly since Charles Wells' involvement in Youngs' brewing process). My preference is also for a tenanted pub rather than a managed pub (especially as most of the good managers that I knew at Youngs pubs have left the company).

13 Jul 2007 11:05

The Harrow, Steep

What a gorgeous pub - sadly there are very few left like this - an absolute pleasure which should have a preservation order slapped on it. Not easy to find but worth every turn. Excellent Cheriton & Ringmer Ales from the barrel - bowls of walnuts & hazelnuts on the table with nutcrackers for the customers to help themselves and a very fiendly barmaid. Pubs really don't come any better than this. Can't wait to return.

11 Jun 2007 00:15

The Spencer Arms, Putney

Visited at 21.15 hrs this evening for dinner (having driven back from Hampshire especially) only to be told by the staff that the kitchen had closed at 21.00 hrs despite the advertised kitchen closing time of 21.45 hrs (ref: Alastair Sawday 2007 Pubs & Inns of England & Wales). This was pointed out to the chef but to no avail and despite the fact that there were empty dining tables available. We will not return.

11 Jun 2007 00:01

The Royal Oak, Borough

Spent a thoroughly enjoyable Sunday afternoon here yesterday joining friendly locals and very hospitable landlord. Excellent Harveys Sussex Mild & Knots of May at 2.40 per pint - intended to advance to the Harveys Pale Ale but just could not leave the Mild alone! Very good value Sunday lunch at 7.75 served until 4.45 pm (most civilised for those who like to lie in on a Sunday morning). Will definitely return soon.

4 Jun 2007 22:12

Aragon House, Parsons Green

Excellent choice of real ale served at a perfect temperature (not warm!)by a discerning management - Jennings Cumberland Ale, Nethergate Suffolk County & Hogsback Tea on handpump on last visit. Additional handpump in the pipeline! Nice garden and BBQ for summer lounging.

20 May 2007 11:05

The Black Boy, Winchester

Visited here again last Thursday evening (en route from London) and had one of the best fresh haddock & chips ever. We have often been here for Sunday lunch & it was refreshing to experience the same high food standard on an evening during the week with similar service & welcome. As ever the real ale choice & quality was exemplary. This has to be one of the best pubs that I have been to for beer, food & ambience.

13 May 2007 23:44

The Willoughby Arms, Kingston Upon Thames

This Sunday afternoon we finally managed to find this truly traditional local for the first time - and it fully lived up to expectations and a report from a fellow real ale enthusiast. Accordingly there was a good choice of real ales well kept (Archers 3.8% was very quaffable) with attention to serving in cold glasses (sadly often neglected in other pubs who forget to train their bar staff to feel the bottom of the glass, and not just the side, when serving). Excellent welcoming landlord and staff - but our only real disappointment was that we were expecting to experience the slow serving, "very miserable barmaid with tattoos and peircings (sic.)everywhere" - but although she did have some tattoos and piercings (although we could not see "everywhere"!) she was anything but miserable & slow on our visit! - must have been something we said! Also, there were fantastic film & rugby pics on display. Will definitely return now that we know how to find it (NB: this is not a reference to the aforementioned barmaid's adornment!). And also for the record, I am not the landlord! But I agree that this pub is well worth a visit if you're in the area.

13 May 2007 23:34

The Hawkley Inn, Hawkley

Rustic local pub recently enlarged by a rear extension that did not seem to be quite finished. Good selection of real ales - Kings Spring well kept but had to ask for it to be topped up to a full pint (more than 1/4 inch short!). High prices of food was a deterrent but will return for real ale and surroundings.

4 May 2007 12:16

The Royal Oak, Borough

What a great traditional pub - excellent beer (Harveys Mild @ 2.40) & friendly locals & staff in comfortable surroundings & glorious Victorian decor sadly long removed from numerous pubs with most brewers' current conversions to trendy bars & over-priced pseudo gastro pubs in the misconceived belief that they will maximise takings thereby. When will the national brewers (& sadly now Youngs) realise that such current marketing is destroying a unique culture which is envied throughout the western world! Just missed the scallops & bacon (8.95) yesterday but will return earlier next time!

1 May 2007 01:33

The Telegraph , Putney Heath

Another thoroughly enjoyable day at The Telegraph - excellent Jennings Cumberland & Weltons Bitter in comfortable and convivial surroundings. Crayfish & sun dried tomatoes salad followed by beef carpacio with parmesan were delicious. Caring & friendly staff and management - manager is a real ale enthusiast which is reflected in the quality and selection of the beers.

28 Apr 2007 23:09

The Sultan, South Wimbledon

What a pleasure it is to find a pub in SW London that serves excellent real ale at sensible prices and that cares about their custom. Furthermore it has not taken advantage of its award winning track record to raise prices.

22 Apr 2007 20:38

The Sun Inn, Bentworth

Lovely country pub with very hospitable landlady. Good range of real ales. Will return.

21 Apr 2007 20:06

The Park Tavern, Kingston Upon Thames

A real gem of a pub not easy to find - over the years they have probably served more different real ales than any other free house. Always a friendly welcome with well behaved rugby supporters on International days.

21 Apr 2007 19:57

The Telegraph , Putney Heath

Since the recent extensive refurbishment and change of ownership this is a totally different pub - in fact it is a "class act" now and accordingly all of the early (pre refurbishment/pre ownership change)comments/reviews on this site should be disregarded - it would be a lot fairer if they were in fact removed altogether as they are totally irrelevant to the current pub which now has the air of a country mansion.

20 Apr 2007 10:13

The Lord Nelson, Brighton

This has always been a gem of a pub as far back as I can remember and one of the very few Harveys pubs to serve the Harveys Hadlow Bitter (previously PA Bitter) and in fact the full range of Harveys real ales - all well kept. Always a friendly welcome.

17 Apr 2007 15:10

The Alehouse, Reading

Certainly the best pub that I have been to in Reading serving a good variety of well kept real ales. Full of characters and friendly staff.

17 Apr 2007 15:04

Trafalgar Freehouse, South Wimbledon

Good cosy little pub with friendly locals. The landlord (who it was nice to see behind the bar) was very welcoming and knows his beers too. Unusually good selection of real ales (including permanent Timothy Taylors Golden Best & Fullers HSB). Looking forward to John Willie Lees Mild on order for next month. Some free parking nearby a bonus.

17 Apr 2007 11:35

The Black Boy, Winchester

Oops! - many apologies I should not have called it Cheriton Pots but the Pots ale brewed by the replacement brewery - if anything the current brew of Pots is even better than the Cheriton one (long gone!)

17 Apr 2007 11:20

The Black Boy, Winchester

Lovely old rambling pub serving a selection of well kept real ales including Cheriton Pots. Excellent Sunday lunches including rare roast beef. The pub I always head for when in the vicinity.

17 Apr 2007 11:13

The Pembury Tavern, Hackney

Went there for the first time on Easter Sunday. What a great pub with hospitable bar staff who let us sample a couple of the largely unfamiliar real ales out of the sixteen handpumps on display. The food also looked good and the chef who came to say hello appeared to be very accomplished even though we only had room for the potato and vegetable chips (which were delicious). We will return soon although it does mean us having to cross London to get there.

11 Apr 2007 01:32

The Crown and Sceptre, Kensington

I always refresh myself at this pub after or during a visit to any of the exhibitions at nearby Olympia (a short hop over the railway footbridge). Last Saturday I was delighted to find a great trio of real ales viz: King's Old Ale, Harveys' Sussex & Hogs Back T.E.A. but I never got past the King's Old Ale as it was so good! Also had a large very tasty club sandwich (as well as excellent real ales they serve good value wholesome food throughout the afternoon on Saturdays).
A genuine pub where you are always made to feel welcome. Long may it thrive.

7 Mar 2007 18:42

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

Very many congratulations for winning SW London CAMRA Pub Of The Year - very well deserved. We had our wedding anniversary & both my wife & my birthday celebrations here last Sunday afternoon and could not have had a better time - we were treated royally. Excellent value Sunday lunch, superb Timothy Taylors (complete range), blazing log fire, good rugby and fantastic atmosphere. Long may this little gem of a pub thrive.

8 Feb 2007 22:53

The Telegraph , Putney Heath

Oh! And just for the record this was actually the first and only (at the time) non-smoking pub in Putney and NOT The Dukes Head as portrayed following the Dukes refurbishment as an overpriced pseudo gastro pub!

21 Dec 2006 23:01

The Telegraph , Putney Heath

Excellent well kept Cameron's Fireside (4.3%) on handpump as well as Welton's Pride & Joy (2.8% - yes 2.8%!) and three other interesting real ales (I am excluding Bombadier for personal taste reasons!) - Welton's is an ideal session beer especially if you are driving. I also look forward to the Old Ale from Horsham that is promised next week. Very friendly welcoming staff and a kitchen that knows how to do a good omelette. Thoroughly enjoyable experience each time that we have been there.

21 Dec 2006 22:54

The Half Moon, Putney

To "a_polite_customer" (or the manager) hereunder - I can only report the facts of the occasion as they arose and accordingly we will not be returning. I am also glad that it is the only music venue of its kind left in south west London - all of the other venues are far more welcoming and appreciate and understand that customers come out to enjoy their evenings.

21 Dec 2006 20:34

The Lamb, Rusper

Great pub with good food & real ale but closing time of 3.00 pm on a Saturday major drawback to spending a relaxed time there after lunch - had to repair to the nearby Plough in Rusper (which does stay open Saturday afternoons!) which was a lovely surprise and to which we will return for a more leisurely weekend lunch.

13 Nov 2006 13:21

The Plough & Attic Rooms, Rusper

Looked in here last Saturday afternoon after having to leave The Lamb nearby at their 3.00 pm closing time.
Most hospitable welcoming landlord here serving a good selection of well-kept real ales open all afternoon on Saturdays (unlike The Lamb). Great log fire. Will return and try the menu next time as well as the excellent locally brewed Hepworths again.

13 Nov 2006 13:11

The Half Moon, Putney

Arrived at 7.45pm last Sunday evening to attend Catfish Keith - went straight into music room (no signs on doors which were open) only to be brusquely told to leave as it was not open yet - no information was offered as to start time or ticket availability. In view of attitude of staff/manager(?)which we had experienced on a similar past occasion some time ago we decided to abandon seeing Catfish Keith at the Half Moon and instead catch him at The Borderline later this month. We left the premises and repaired to the hospitality of the Bricklayers Arms nearby. In future we will never go to the Half Moon no matter who is performing there.

31 Oct 2006 13:47

The Dukes Head, Putney

Bangers & mash at 8.50 - no thank you!!
And for the record the old glass was only saved because a caring customer managed to get it listed before Youngs converted the place to yet another one of their overpriced psuedo gastro pubs. I will stick to the traditional Bricklayers Arms around the corner.

31 Oct 2006 11:07

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

This pub goes from strength to strength having recently installed another two handpumps serving two guest ales in addition to the unique (for London) full range of Timothy Taylors' excellently kept real ales on the other five handpumps. A qualified chef has also been engaged to produce good value Sunday roasts - but don't be fooled into thinking that this has changed the place into one of the psuedo overpriced gastro pubs so currently favoured by the likes of Youngs Brewery - this place is a genuine unspoilt traditional pub!

22 Oct 2006 13:36

The Turks Head, St Margarets

Good pub, friendly staff & excellent landlord - the best pint of Fullers London Pride that I have had anywhere.

15 Sep 2006 11:35

The Dukes Head, Putney

Whilst the Dukes Head is closed for refurbishment serious local real ale drinkers could do no better than to repair to the Bricklayers Arms (two minutes walk therefrom) for the full range of well-kept five Timothy Taylors brews (probably the only pub in London with this range) and rediscover well-kept unadulterated real ale and the traditional pub with hospitality and convivial atmosphere that Youngs seem to have jetisoned with their employment of the current breed of new managers. Indeed it is highly likely that having visited the Bricklayers Arms you may not return to the Dukes Head!

28 Aug 2006 17:36

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

Superb pub - good atmosphere & friendly staff - remarkably good home-made fresh food (obviously a good chef on the premises) at reasonable prices - but sadly food only served until 3pm and pub closed at weekends. St Peters' beers well kept and served but session bitter at 3.7% was not available during my visit - stronger organic bitter at 4.0% good though if a little too stong for my consumption! I will definitely return.

21 Aug 2006 13:03

The Crown and Sceptre, Kensington

Excellent tenanted pub run by a lovely couple - good real ale selection well kept & served - good value food and one of the best weekly quiz nights (Tuesdays). Always an enjoyable visit.

21 Aug 2006 12:49

The Museum Tavern, Bloomsbury

Very good manager who knows his real ales and his clientele. Just about the best pub in the West End restored to its former glory by a very good manager who knows his real ales and his clientele. Staff also very polite. Four of us spent a most enjoyable evening here last night (excellent pints of Butcombe & Timmie's Landlord) following my retreat from a pub down the road which served a disgusting pint of Youngs Bitter (which the manager here is very wisely resisting stocking!).

18 Aug 2006 13:41

The Spotted Horse, Putney

Under the new management of David Cotton (whose previous management of the Brook Green Hotel in Shepherds Bush is sorely missed by regulars there) who has introduced welcome improvements at the Spotted Horse notably serving all day breakfasts, Eggs Benedict & Eggs Florentine.

2 Aug 2006 13:44

The Grapes, Wandsworth

Just shows what a tenant can do to Youngs Bitter compared to most managers - Des & Sharon consistently serve the best pint of Youngs Bitter that I have ever quaffed. Please keep up the good work and don't let any Youngs area manager near! And also don't let Youngs do another refurbishment - the culture of traditional pubs like this one must not be allowed to disappear.

23 Jul 2006 21:44

The Hand In Hand, Wimbledon Common

Now under the new management of Andrew Ford one of an apparently diminishing breed of very good traditional pub managers that haven't been driven out by the apparent culture change at Youngs. Accordingly the Youngs Bitter is very well kept and the hospitality refreshingly welcome for a Youngs pub. This is one of a handful of Youngs pubs left (where staff are not constantly changing) that I now visit for an enjoyable time.

23 Jul 2006 21:30

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

Great traditional pub.
With the cavalry charge by some breweries (sadly now apparently led by Youngs Brewery) to convert many of their pubs to faceless bars & gastro-pubs (most of the latter in fact falling well short of the real thing & often being far less value for money than most restaurants) it is refreshing to discover a traditional pub like the Bricklayers Arms in Putney.
The added bonuses here are four handpumps serving well kept Timothy Taylors (probably the only pub in London with this beer range)- Golden Best, Best Bitter, Ram Tam & Landlord, and old fashioned hospitality from Becky, John, Sam & Paddy (Youngs Brewery especially could do with sending some of their area managers & new managers to this pub for training in hospitality and cellar work).
Furthermore the " craic " amongst the regulars at this pub is always entertaining.
A happy experience every time.
