The Steam Engine, Lambeth North

Splendid selection of bottled beers, including some from Denmark and a few porters and stouts, several handpumps, lots of gins. And burgers.

Nice change from the usual London chains.

The Stag Inn, Llanidloes

A local's pub for local people which manages, nonetheless, to welcome non-locals. I smiled at the sight of the Fullers ESB, nigh on my local brew, but I know my Fullers and it was in tip top nick.

The landlord's dog is adorable btw. Big Screen TV showing wendyball stopped me having a third pint mind. Clearly Man U are as a big draw in Llani as elsewhere.

Old Mill Bar, Llanidloes

Introduced to the Old Mill by my country cousins. Hidden down through an alleyway, across a courtyard, and then down a long too brightly lit corridor you enter a dark room and...

Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.

Funky, laid back, quirky furnishings and decoration, WONDERFUL beer, and lovely, lovely people. Both staff and customers. Did I say the beer was wonderful?

27 Feb 2015 18:56

The Black Jug, Horsham

£4.50 a pint now. And still plenty of twenty-somethings, and those old enough to know better, paying drink by drink with their debit cards. But the atmosphere in there is always good, the beer always well kept, the wine list has some novel twists, and, whilst it isn't my local, I'll walk the extra distance to visit the Jack Blug for sometime to come.

27 Feb 2015 18:51

The Ferry House Inn, Llanstadwell

Scrum V on hand pump was in good order but was only real beer on offer so loses a mark or two.

Food is SUPERB and great value; best rib-eye steak I've ever eaten in a pub. Nice cross section of whiskys and whiskey behind the bar, stocks Harveys Bristol Cream too which is a bonus, and the wine list is very good and very good value.

Nice views too.

27 Feb 2015 18:46

The Black Jug, Horsham

£4.10 a pint now. It feels like it is starting to price itself of my menu. And the bar service can be very hit and miss, not helped by groups of twenty-somethings buying their own drinks each using a debit card. Buy rounds or stay home people, pur-leeze.

Always call in on a Sunday evening for one or two with the wife. A quiet natter and a read of the broadsheets. I'll probably still be doing so when it is £5.00 a pint!

5 Aug 2013 16:07

The Hastings Arms, Hastings

A delight. Keeps good ale and serves it well. Always a good crowd in there of a weekend evening and visitors don't get treated to "The Slaughtered Lamb" treatment as they sometimes do elsewhere in the Old Town.

5 Aug 2013 16:03

The Filo (First In Last Out), Hastings

A Hastings institution that continues to please. Great mild, great IPA sampled by yours truly who left wanting more, and the usual other beers on tap. Doesn't do food on Sunday lunchtime so is idea for a quiet pint. Not just the best pub in the Old Town but one of the top five in Sussex.

5 Aug 2013 16:01

The Anchor, Hastings

Great place for people watching, good service, decent choice of beers which are all well kept. Wish it was my local.

5 Aug 2013 15:58

The Sussex Oak, Warnham

Has a perfect pint of Dark Star Darkness there today. Promptly served, reasonable prices, large range of real beer, and a great beer garden.

20 Jul 2013 19:12

The Blue Bell, Annan

The previous review seems to be a review of the clientèle rather than the pub itself. ;)

Annan should be proud of the Blue Bell. A 'real ale' pub in a land of keg beer where the landlord knows his stuff and, if you're lucky, you'll find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with the brewer who made the pint you're drinking. Buzzing atmosphere on the Sunday evening we visited and a good selection of guest ales as well as the usual keg suspects. Perfect pub. A veritable modern day 'Moon under Water'. My only regret, it is so far, several hundred miles, from home.

4 Jun 2013 11:45

The Foragers, Hove

They need to turn the music down. I've been in three weekend evenings this year and every time my friends and I have been sent heading for the door and off to find somewhere else to drink because of the volume of the sound system. And we weren't the only ones heading for the door on each occasion.

7 May 2013 14:17

White Horse, Ditchling

Visited at the weekend when we were down in Ditchling doing the Artists Open Houses. Great beer, good wine, delicious vfm food, friendly service and we were treated to some very fine folk singing by the Morris troupe we followed into the bar.

Highly recommended.

7 May 2013 14:13

Ye Old Stout House, Horsham

As near as it gets in Horsham to a town centre boozer. Seems popular, beer is okay given it is Hall and Woodhouse, I go for something in a bottle.

29 Apr 2013 17:58

The Station, Horsham

It is a Beefeater. That's all you need to know. Only the desperate or the deranged go in there to drink but if carbonised meat and yellow fizzy 'beer' is your thing they can rustle some up for you in minutes.

29 Apr 2013 17:54

The Dog and Bacon, Horsham

It's OK. It's not great but it ain't bad. Beer is well kept, bar is clean, and whilst busy it rarely gets overcrowded. Always seems much smaller on the inside than it looks on the outside.

29 Apr 2013 17:51

The Boar's Head, Horsham

Most definitely not closed.

29 Apr 2013 17:50

The Bear, Horsham

Not for me anymore since it changed hands. Barman was scarely able to serve two drinks. Full of foul-mouthed strutting 40-something blokes who were full of ale and anger.

29 Apr 2013 17:47

The Partridge, Partridge Green

Well worth a visit. Great beers, kept to the highest standards. Good food cooked to order and perfection. Friendly staff. It's clean. Nice garden. What more do you want from a village pub.

29 Apr 2013 17:45

The Stand Up Inn, Lindfield

In short it has been wrecked. Destroyed. Vandalised. A pub I used to cycle 15 miles to visit is not now worth crossing the street for.

29 Apr 2013 17:42

The Bent Arms, Lindfield

Slowest bar service in the history of ale. Food is ok but portion size is not always on a pr with price. Standard Hall and Woodhouse ale on tap and in bottles. Needs to try harder.

29 Apr 2013 17:40

The Wheatsheaf, Plummers Plain

Sometimes call in of a Friday evening on way home for a pint. Beer is well kept though the locals can seem a bit intimidating and unfriendly and there is sometimes a sense of barely repressed anger from behind the bar. Maybe this is because I never order any food? ;)

29 Apr 2013 17:38

The Victory, Staplefield

Often ride past The Victory as I cycle home from work. Seems to be very popular of a weekday evening. Visited it for the first time in ages last Friday. Had the Harveys. Well kept pint. Emphasis is clearly on food these days but that is where the money is so who can blame them, and what I saw looked pretty good. The restaurant was doing a roaring trade whilst my wife and I were the only people in the bar. Clean bright interior and lovely staff.

29 Apr 2013 17:35

The Partridge, Partridge Green

Called in at 11:30 on a Saturday morning a last weekend with two mates. We were cycling from London-Brighton-Shoreham-Horsham(home) as you do, and one of us had a slow puncture so we thought... beer garden... beer... fix it...

Was told bar didn't open until 12:00 but the look of crushed disappointment on my face prompted the bar man to ask the landlady if he could serve me. On hearing our tale she was happy for us to rehydrate in her establishment. My two colleagues drink the black stuff and yellow beer so I was the only one luck enough to have two pints of Dark Stars finest 'Original' in tip-top condition. When we left the garden was packed and the kitchen was doing a good trade.

Well worth a trip form Horsham to take a drink here, there is even a Morvelo-Dark Star cycling jersey over the bar, just like the one I own and wear form time-to-time.

No idea what the 'local's' in the rest of the reviews below are on about, I suggest you ignore their comments if thinking of going here for a beer. This is a pub review site not a place to wage war on your neighbours fellas.

23 Oct 2011 17:33

The Crown, Horsham

Recent begged the Greene King area manager to sort this place out. Could be a gold mine if it competed with the Black Jug, instead it just keeps going backwards.

10 Oct 2011 16:56

The Galleon Inn, Broad Haven

Perfectly pleasant pub in a location with spectacular views. Brains SA, Bitter and Rev. James on when I visited last week. Food is dependable with large portion sizes.

10 Oct 2011 16:49

The Three Jolly Butchers, Brighton

Regularly call in when in the city. Beer well kept and locals are friendly though staff turnover seems high. Nice food and free wi-fi

29 Aug 2011 19:45

Chequers, Brighton

Nice pub with quirky decor and locals who let you be. Sometimes that's a bonus in Brighton. Well kept beers.

29 Aug 2011 19:43

Hop Poles, Brighton

Will be back once the scaffolding is done.

29 Aug 2011 19:40

The Cricketers, Brighton

Far too expensive with almost nothing to justify the prices. Bar staff were friendly enough and it is clean and the beer well kept but I can't afford to go in there again for a while.

29 Aug 2011 19:39

The Stand Up Inn, Lindfield

still doing what it does so well very well indeed

14 Dec 2010 21:08

Hop Poles, Brighton

Usually make the effort to call in when in town so supped here, with friends, on Saturday evening amongst the zombies ghouls and brides of frankenstein/dracula that make up the halloween weekend clientele of any Brighton City Centre pub.

Barman more or less chased some idlers from the corner table for four of us to get a seat when it looked we might turn on our toes - well done that man!

The Proper Job was in fine form, as was the St Edmunds of which I has a couple. Excellent 80's sounds being played, until the shift change when it all went a bit too contemprary for my musical tastes. The food looked good but we had lunched at Food for Friends so didn't partake.

1 Nov 2010 14:16

The Dragon, Colgate

there may yet be hope. No change of use planning application as yet.

15 Oct 2010 21:47

The Rake, London Bridge

A real find if you like real beer served somewhere that isn't a throwback to the 1930's. But it is small, and boy does it get busy.

27 Sep 2010 16:21

Bridge House, Copsale

They had the wreckers in last week, and there is someone staying on site at night but still not clear what is going on. District Council planning portal suggests it may reopen as a B&B!

27 Sep 2010 16:08

The Evening Star, Brighton

Went in for a quick couple on Saturday lunch time with friends. Only downside was the two well oiled chaps loudly holding court in the middle of the bar room and effing and blinding every third word.

Beer was superb as always and service excellent.

27 Sep 2010 16:02

The Olive Branch, Horsham

London prices plus? I'm sorry but no, the only London prices this is more expensive than are those of greasy and wether spoon's!

Went there with a gorup of 6 to celebrate my daughters 21st with the family. Three course meal with drinks, and a post meal snifter, excellent service, superb food - well presented well cooked and full of flavour for 200.

Ale range is limited, lager range is not and the emphasis is clearly on dining. Wine list is pretty standard but nice to see a viognier and a riesling for those of us who don't 'do' chardonnay.

Not quite in the Black Jug league but still very very good by local standards.

13 Aug 2010 08:47

Plough, Farnham

Have been back in for a swift half since my earlier review. The swift half turned into four. I see no reason to change my opinion of the place.

2 Jun 2010 17:56

The Cleveland, Brighton

How I envy those lucky enough to have this little gem as their local. The beer is as fine a pint as you will find anywhere in the City, the food is ruddy marvellous, the staff a delight to be served by, and the locals as an eclectic mix as Brighton can deliver.

A great place to go wtih good friends if you want to sit and talk and while away the hours.

2 Jun 2010 17:50

The Crown, Horsham

When it re-opened after the refit it was a breath of fresh air. The fresh air got old fast. Good place to meet up and get gone from. Food below avg. beer ditto. Staff nice and customers keep themselves to themselves in the main.

2 Jun 2010 17:41

The Windmill Inn, Littleworth

Called in recently. Stood at the bar being ignored for what felt like ages. Locals weren't ignoring me, nudge, nod, wink, chortle, I guess they've not seen many cyclists before. Took my money and my custom elsewhere.

2 Jun 2010 17:36

The Station, Horsham

Uggh! Says it all really. Went in with a mate after a train was delayed. I knew I'd regret it and I did. That said my niece and her family like the restaurant side of things, so we often go in for meals, and what they do on that side of the business they do in a very creditable way. But as a pub.........

2 Jun 2010 17:34

The Tanners Arms, Horsham

Deserves to succeed, if it doesn't it won't be for lack of trying. VASTLY IMPROVED over how it was before and beer is in good nick. Didn't know about the takeway in-house policy, a good curry from the Raj Kumar and a few pints would be my idea of heaven.

2 Jun 2010 17:31

The Quarter, Horsham

Certainly not a pub, definitely a restaurant but they make the best salads anywhere in town. Review below tells you all you need to know about the beer, but my wife and I like the food, the staff and the atmosphere so we will be going back.

2 Jun 2010 17:28

The White Horse, Maplehurst

One of the best pubs in the area, always got a good drop or three on tap. Called in y'day whilst cycling from Seaford to Horsham. Superb pint of Hepworth's Chanctonbury Ring Oatmeal Stout to take the pain of the last 6 miles to home out of my legs. Friendly locals, though one pointedly remarked about my cycing whilst dressed in black. He was wearing hi-viz whilst at the bar, not much danger of getting run over there I'd have thought, but each to their own.

2 Jun 2010 17:21

Plough, Farnham

Went here on Saturday. It's our friends local (well actually there is one other pub nearer their house) and yet they'd never ever been in it. Having spent the afternoon quaffing wine round theirs I was gagging for a decent pint. They were worried it would be a bit student-y but a nice cross section of humanity came and went while we were in.

Not disappointed. Pint of Early Bird, top notch, bottle of 1698, a little over chilled perhaps but nothing that five mins sat on the table didn't sort. Off we went to the nearby Tandoori only to find our table wasn't ready. So back to the Plough. Pint of Kent's Best. The people of Kent are lucky.

Very clean, well ordered premises, friendly landlady and staff, fast service at the bar, conversations broken off as soon as a customer appeared.

Well done The Plough

4 May 2010 17:24

The Evening Star, Brighton

Owned by Dark Star so that score's it a six straight through the door. Excellent range of Belgian and other foreign beers on tap and in bottles. 7/10.

Staff who know what they are doing and how to handle and serve beer, plus the usual brightonbillynojobs day time regulars and local working living lunch time crew. Friendly enough to take the mickey as I was on crutches every time I went in there in Feb, Mar and April (coming back from the Hosp it is a good watering hole for the station)

Spotlessly clean too. Seek it out and drink there.

4 May 2010 17:06

The Three Jolly Butchers, Brighton

we always end up hear after going to laugh ourselves silly at the Komedia. Stays open late, decent selection of wine according to the girls anyway, and beer in top notch order.

But... but... but.... there is something I can't quite put my finger on that means it doesn't quite do it for me

4 May 2010 17:02

The Preston Park Tavern, Brighton

It's a restaurant inside a pub. The food is fantastic, but think restaurant prices rather than pub grub. Good pint of Harvey's and wine by the glass. Clientele is at the hipper end of Brighton's mature set, and, as anyone who knows the locale will tell you, the locals have a few bob. Predominantly female clientele tonight and a few male couples including mine. Nice vibe to the place, happy smiley people on both sides of the bar. Sort of place I'd like to take my friends to for a meal but wouldn't want it as my local.

The staff deserve a special word. Lovely people, very attentive but not intrusive, and very efficient. Will be going back with the wife to get her take as it is just around the corner from her brothers.

30 Sep 2009 22:34

The Meridian, Lewes

currently up for sale. make of that what you will

1 Sep 2009 11:37

The Ship and Shovell, Charing Cross

visited this excellent pub twice yesterday. Once for a business chat with a colleague over a pint at around four and then later at ten with a mate for a nightcap.

Well presented and well handled pints both times. i had the cricket, the tanglefoot and the badger. beer in top condition and the bar maid recognised me on my return and said "cricket wasn't it?" so friendly staff even if they are all students and make me feel like a very old man. Marvellous.

Plenty of room early afternoon and got a seat on entering in the evening. Having found it, and it being in a part of London I'm oftem passing through I can say with confidence I'll be back.

28 Aug 2009 22:58

Napoleon Inn, Boscastle

After a crap experience in the cobweb (see review) tried this one instead. Not worth the walk up the hill so wished I hadn't. Pubs like this don't expect repeat custom but rely in summer on day visitors who won't be back. Beer warm and on the turn, I politely pointed this out and was told I knew not of what I spoke. 'Tribute tastes like that' (but it didn't at the brewer nor the other three pubs I tried it in) So that was that. Ho hum, tourists flock to Boscastle like sheep. Sheep get fleeced. Go figure.

18 Aug 2009 19:47

The Cobweb Inn, Boscastle

Went in on a quiet mid week afternoon so perhaps (I'm hoping) my experience is not typical. Very unwelcoming, stood around for ages waiting to be served in near deserted bar, only wanted a pint and a half and no food needed so our custom didn't seem welcome. Got short changed as bar man didn't seem able to count and breathe at the same time. Great pint of Doom but one drunk local bar prop decided to take the piss out of me when I went in to order our second round. So I left. Atmosphere does not derive from painting a place in dark colours and filling it with a-holes nor by putting tables in the car park amongst the 4x4's. Must try harder.

18 Aug 2009 19:42

The Carpenters Arms, Shirenewton

called in just before lunchtime last orders on Sunday. Was welcomed like the prodigal son and served a superb pint which I drank in the superb garden you lucky people to have this gem on your doorstep. Stay the night and save yourself a cab ride!

18 Aug 2009 19:32

Selsey Arms, Horsham

Decent pub but on an early Saturday evening you may find some of the locals have been in a while and want to be your best mate and engage you in banter. This may or may not be your cup of tea. Good beer well priced by local exorbitant standards.

18 Aug 2009 19:24

Red Lion Hotel, Llanidloes

DREADFUL. No other way to describe it really. Piss poor beer, piss poor food, piss poor service. Used to be one of the best pubs in Lani, how times change.

18 Aug 2009 19:14

Black Lion Hotel, Llanidloes

currently up for sale ?and shut?

18 Aug 2009 19:11

The Stag Inn, Llanidloes

currently closed for refurbishment; local rumour has it that it will be reopening as a real ale freehouse.

18 Aug 2009 19:10

The White Hart, Littleton on Severn

Was staying in a local B&B two nights ago and this pub was recommended to me as a place for an evening meal. I was hungry having cycled down from mid-Wales that day.

The food I ate was fine, nothing hugely special, but well cooked, well presented pub chain fare. As it happens fish cakes are a favourite of mine ;) There was a steady footfall through the place of diners and drinkers. Service was fine, the two young ladies behind the bar chatting to each other, about the relative merits of the various districts of Brizzle as place to live, but maintaining vigilance and breaking off as soon as anyone approached the bar.

I had two pints of Youngs, a special, and the straight bitter. Superb, enough to want me to kidnap the cellarman and take him home with me. The locals were downing the stuff enthusiastically too.

Place has a tidy wine list too, but after eating I was in the mood for a coffee and a brandy. They serve a decent espresso dopio to go with your courvoisier.

Not the cheapest pub I've ever been in but certainly one of the cleanest and friendliest I've been in in a long time. Wish it were one of my locals.

18 Aug 2009 19:06

The Witch, Haywards Heath

Great value food. Beer a bit indifferent and generally lacking in a bit of atmosphere I think. Friendly staff and landlord. Good but not great. As others have said with The Witch and The Stand Up in Lindfield you need nowt else you luck b*gg*rs.

23 Jul 2009 12:13

The Stand Up Inn, Lindfield

Still on form, still the best real beer drinkers pub in a 10 mile radius. What more do you want from a pub then excellent beers well kept, friendly staff and locals, and cleanliness throughout.

How I wish the stand up was my local. Oi, Dark Star! open a pub in Horsham please!!!

23 Jul 2009 12:11

Hop Poles, Brighton

Wjodathoughtit on Middle Street? What a find! Is this place Brighton's best kept secret?

Excellent food from a huge eclectic and ever changing menu. Good well kept guest ale with no Greene King beer in sight. Decent wine. Very excellent staff who treated us like we were old friends coming back home when it was our first visit. For a city centre pub prices are ok. Rammed, but, and a big but, six of us got a table at 19:30 after a short wait, so there seems to be a steady turnover of customers.

Best pub I've found in that part of town. I was told it was charming and it charmed me. Only limitations were limited range of ale (two only) and not everything on menu was actually available. A very creditable 8 out of 10 and, as Arnie said "I'll be back"

23 Jul 2009 12:08

The Fortune of War, Brighton

Ghastly pub full of wannabies and teachers, not a decent drink to be had there, deafeningly loud music, overcrowded, overpriced. Not the place to go for a drink on a wet July evening beach or no beach

23 Jul 2009 12:00

The Swan on the Green, West Peckham

great beer, great food, great staff, great customers/locals. One of the best pubs I've ever been in. Wonderful location.

9 Jun 2009 19:16

The Babbity Bowster, Glasgow

Went in there on Sunday morning for brunch. good selection of wines (way too much Heineken (no choice at Murrayfield) the day before), friendly staff, and good quality VFM food. Was recommeded it by a Blackfriar's regular!

26 May 2009 16:27

The Station, Horsham

still dreadful

26 Aug 2008 19:54

The Lynd Cross, Horsham

Woeful but cheap

26 Aug 2008 19:52

The Horse and Groom, Horsham

and I quote....

THE HORSE and Groom pub in Horsham has been shut down, after police presented evidence in court of cocaine use on the premises. The East Street pub will be boarded up and all access denied until midnight October 14, after a decision by Mid Sussex Magistrates Court in Haywards Heath yesterday afternoon (Friday August 15). Following a dramatic raid on Thursday August 7, police found cannabis and a small quantity of cocaine on the East Street premises. Scanning equipment used on surfaces in the pub gave high readings of cocaine residue, both in private and public areas, including on the pool table, according to a statement given to the court by Inspector Martin Pattenden.

Magistrate Kenneth Berry said: "We are satisfied that closure is necessary to prevent serious nuisance and disorder, therefore we believe that the action we are taking in terms of issuing a closure order is appropriate."

Well done Sussex police long, long overdue in my book.

26 Aug 2008 19:50

The Foresters Arms, Horsham

What a huge improvement. Good beer, good wine and the food looked great.

26 Aug 2008 19:46

The Fleur de Lis Hotel, Sandwich

Great staff, great beer, great wine, 'nuff said. (didn't try the food - but the food prices looked as if they are influenced by Pfizer expense accounts - as per the whole of Sandwixh)

21 Apr 2008 15:29

The Crown, Horsham

I have no connection with The Crown other than as a satisifed customer and stand by my comments of Nov 07, I've been back several times since, at a variety of times and nights, and in a variety of company, and no one has had a bad word to say... this from a group that ranges from my 18-year-old Goth daughter to my 87 year old ex-para father with just about everything in between. I would not take my wife or my family or friends to a pub where there was a likelyhood of violence or drug abuse.

There have been a number of trainee bar staff learning the job on recent visits and service has suffered a little as a result though I tend to view this as a source of entertainment rather than annoyance....

I had a meal which was below par on my day off recently, my friend's meal was fine. I told the manager ASAP and my complaint was dealt with swiftly and with as much good grace as her obvious embarasment would allow. At not point was I asked to leave and have been back since and had an enjoyable pint. Much better pubs in town if real ale is your thing but if you want a lager, bottled beer or a glass or bottle of wine, or even a coffee in a bar for grown ups, The Crown is

21 Jan 2008 17:08

The Bent Arms, Lindfield

Food remains the great attraction, but beer and wine are good value and well kept. Why does it always have to be so cold in here though?

12 Nov 2007 15:55

The Stand Up Inn, Lindfield

Best beer for miles around. Only wish I lived locally as I'd go there more often but daren't risk mixing drinking with driving. Comes as near to perfection as a drinker's, rather than diners, pub as you will find. 5 star. Please open a pub in Horsham!

12 Nov 2007 15:54

The Crown, Horsham

What a transformation! Been in 4 or 5 times since the refurb on Sat and Sun lunchtimes. Always seems to attract couples and mature small groups of friends. Beer is well kept though not the most imaginitive selection in town. Food well prepared and well presented, staff friendly. Overall atmosphere and decor is very much like a hotel bar rather than a town centre pub.

12 Nov 2007 15:47

Fox and Hounds, Funtingdon

Went there last Sunday; emphasis on food and staff seemed put out when we only wanted to order drinks. Comfortable bright interior, but lacking in atmosphere, get quite busy and service slows down as a result. Well kept beer from H&W, food did look good. Worth a detour if going from Chi to Midhurst but not really my style.

4 Oct 2007 13:38

The Spotted Cow, Angmering

Nice but busy pub down a quiet lane in Angmering. H?ad no problem getting a seat during a busy Sunday lunch period. Didn't eat but the food looked great, good selection of real ale plus all the usual eurofizz. House wines by the bottle keenly priced. Bottled Guinness well chilled behind the bar matched well with a half of Harvey's Sussex for a thirst quenching pint after a stroll to Highdown and back. Well worth a visit if you are in the nieghbourhood.

10 Sep 2007 18:06

Park View, Brighton

Can't agree that the Park View doesn't cater to the local community; I've been drinking in there, off-and-on, for over 15 years with various friends and family memebers who are lucky enough to have this pub as their local. The current incarnation is the best yet but they still have a lot of work to do...

The younger bar staff can be a bit gormless at times, though the older ones are generally very good, but they all don't seem to cope well under pressure when it gets busy. The various chalkboards detailing the wines and food available are not always accurate or up-to-date. Sorry but no one; Torres Vina Esmerelda is NOT a Gewrtztraminer and should not be listed as such. Sorry but no two; I should not have to ask for a non-available wine cooler when I order a bottle of white wine for Mrs Workhard and her girly friends.

The ale is generally well kept and usually there is a decent selection on, however the lager louts of my acquintance often complian that the lager isn't cold enough. Very pleasing selection of bottled Belgian beers for sale. Good pub quiz on a Tuesday which always seems to be won by the same pair!

Prices compare with the rest of Brighton i.e. it's expensive, food is popular but inconsistent

29 Aug 2007 16:52

The Cornubia, Bristol

Only had time for one pint here but what I had was very good indeed. Excellent pub well worth a visit if walking from Temple Meads to the City Centre.

29 Aug 2007 16:37

The Kings Head, Bristol

This is virtually your local if you are staying at the nearby Novotel in Bristol and well worth a visit. 5 - 7 minutes walk from Temple Meads so if you have time to kill whilst waiting for a train.... Unspoilt Victorian interior, so rare these days in city pubs, friendly staff and locals; great beer, opening hours a bit restricted - thoroughly recommended.

The Bent Arms, Lindfield

Like simondavis I'm happy to travel a fair few miles to take a pint here, guest ales are usually in very good condition and there is a decent wine list. Food is tremendous value for money, the sandwiches are HUGE.

The Star, Haywards Heath

Best "proper pub", as opposed to "bar" that I've tried in the town, a real honest-to-goodness town centre boozer which, as a result, doesn't appeal to everyone. Decent well kept beer - had a great pint of Landlord last week.

Many outside tables with a view of the main road - doesn't do food early evenings but very handy for a whole selection of eateries. and yes it is a very big umbrella.

Bridge House, Copsale

Nice country pub, with a good size garden, with a growing reputation for live music since a recent change of landlord. Very good beer

The Station, Horsham

Still a dreadful place, this summer has often had no ale on at all, not a pub at all (any more) just a waiting room for the Beefeater.

The Tanners Arms, Horsham

I've developed a strange affection for the Tanners since getting very drunk there and taking part in one of their Karaoke evenings. Great garden out the back and 'her indoors' appreciates the house no swearing rule that operates in the bars. Seems to be in a constant state of refit/redecorating at present.

The snug is just that and the main bar feels like someones living room. Locals, staff, and landlords very friendly and welcoming and are good at remembering faces so we always get a good welcome when we visit even though we probably only fetch up there once a month. Beer is nothing special but nowt wrong with it in my experience.

The Malt Shovel, Horsham

Great place to watch an England Rugby game on the TV; excellent beer both in quality and range. Fairly warm welcome from the regulars; serves good honest pub food and very handy for some of the town's best curry houses.

The Foresters Arms, Horsham

Seems popular with locals and regulars but served us the worse two glasses of red wine (read Sarsons) I've ever tasted. Nice small garden, characterful interior, indifferent beers, friendly people.

The Black Jug, Horsham

My wife's favourite pub in the town but I argue it is aimed more at the restaurant and wine bar trade than a 'proper' pub. Often crowded, but thankfully no longer smokey, and certainly not cheap. I have had several poor quality pints in there some of which should never have made it across the counter top. Some of the staff know good beer, and others don't. They are always rushed off their feet. Good range of reasonable quality wines some of which are hugely overpriced and some of which are surprisingly cheap. Not worth a detour but if you're going past.

The Stags Head, Dublin

Don't visit Dublin without going to this pub. Great Guinness and the food is excellent and comes in HUGE portions.

The Bear, Horsham

Probably the best pub in the heart of Horsham town centre, I often join my 85 year old Dad in there for a pint on a Saturday lunchtime. They keep a good pint from H&W not the worlds greatest brewer IMHO - but then having been born in Horsham I'm biased against H&W; brewing a beer called 'Sussex' in Dorset makes no sense to me.

The Harp, Covent Garden

Why, oh why, have I been walking past this place on my trips to Theatreland and the National Gallery and drinking in the Chandos or the Marquis of Granby. Has to be the best pub in central London. If you go midweek towards the end of the evening it is a lot less crowded. The staff know their real ale and serve a great pint, great clientele make for fun people watching.

The Bountiful Cow, Holborn

Serves a good pint of Adnams (Broadside was off but nothing to say this was case, not even a tea towel over the pump) but there's not much else I can say in favour. Decor is bright, cheerful, and funky, staff friendly and the food looks good. Seems popular with loud suited City types and East European builder types who like to sit at the bar, eavesdrop your conversation, and glower at you over the top of their drink.

More a bar than a pub so not my style at all but others will love it.

The Enterprise, Holborn

Visited The Enterprise for the first time last week, on the strength of the reviews in BITE. Really, REALLY good pint of Broadside, decor impressive, atmosphere welcoming despite the lack of lighting and staff charming. Seems to be very popular with couples.

But why the DEAFENINGLY LOUD music? Fair play, by sitting inside but as far from the bar as possible, my friend and I could just about hear each other talk (loudly) but it wasn't condusive to conversation.

The Cittie of Yorke, Holborn

Been a regular but infrequent visitor to the main bar here for over twenty years. Never, ever had a bad pint in there. Typical Sam's pub; great commitment to fairtrade and 'own brand' product. Great pint of Stout, and good to see Imperial Russian in there too, prices remind me of ten years ago!

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

As Mr_Flash said "a gem of a pub". Excellent Adnams ales, great pork pies, friendly efficient bar staff, and a lively atmosphere. Only potential downside is it is now an established part of the London tourist trail; lots of people only calling in for one drink and then moving on. My personal favorite pub in the City/East London.

4 Sep 2006 12:23

The Station, Horsham

more a restaurant, it is a Beef Eater after all, than a pub this would be my local except that I'd rather go almost anywhere else. Popped in for a quick pint with the missus two weeks ago to discover they had no bitter on and only one type of lager!

The Lynd Cross, Horsham

new clean air policy very welcome but the SLOWEST service in Horsham
