The Royal Oak, Dolton

Under new management... looking forward to paying a visit on my next trip to Devon.

The Roebuck, Richmond Hill

Friends organised for us to have NYE 2006 at the Roebuck, and what a great venue. Staff were generally very pleasant and service was efficient. Fortunately the place wasn't oversold, so you had room to move and although there was music, you could actually have a normal level conversation. Come midnight, we were all handed champagne and went out front to watch the fireworks going off all across London (what a view!).

Then back inside for a few more drinks and the landlord joined in the dancing through the wee hours.

We'll be back.

Old Gaol House, Winchester

the sort of place where you'd catch an STD from standing on the carpet.

The Black Boy, Winchester

Boss_Hog, you're really showing your ignorance here. The name of the pub dates from WAY before the current landlord and relates to chimney sweeps (ie: kids who were black from soot). Check your facts before making such inane comments.

Lennon's, Southampton

This is a nightclub. That said, it has some fantastic live music. Local upcoming outfits as well as touring bands on the make. If you want a flavour of the sort of thing you'll see here go to longliverockandroll.com

It has a strong student following and as such drink specials abound.

The Guildhall Tavern, Winchester

Significant improvements to the running of this place. Decent local live music on many nights. Still a bit of a booze barn, but mouthgard and stack-hat no longer required.

The Plough, Sparsholt

Got to agree with "bornandbred" really. This is more a restaurant than a pub. The food's not bad though. Service is wildly variable from reasonable to appalling. There's a pleasant beergarden ovelooking a field and a timber playset for kids (which also means it can be a bit noisy outside). A couple of good walks in the area. A once very nice pub that's lost its sheen.

The Flowerpots Inn, Cheriton

A fairly average pub overall. Not "unwelcoming", but the staff do seem rather indifferent to your presence. Nice location and some good beer brewed onsite. Food is rather ordinary. Interesting glass cover over an old well in the middle of the bar. No credit cards, so take cash. A good place to start/finish a countryside walk, but there are other nicer pubs nearby. Can get very busy on weekend afternoons in the summer. Generally worth a visit, but nothing to write home about.

Bush Inn, Arlesford

Lovely old pub in a quiet rural setting. Decent selection of beers and wines. The food is above average for pub food, but not as good as I remember it being a couple of years ago. Open fires in winter. Nice little riverside beergarden in summer. Plenty of country and riverside walks nearby.

The White Horse, Hampstead Heath

I went to this pub for the first time on Saturday night for a party. What a great atmosphere. Nicely done bar area and the dinig area looked good. If the nibbles we had for the party are anything to go by, the food in the restaurant would be great. Very friendly and efficient staff. A great night. Now I just have to find more excuses to be in Hampstead, so I can visit again.

The Bishop, East Dulwich

Now there's a fine example of immediate and appropriate respone to consumer comment. keep up the fine work at The Bishop. We're loving it.

The Duke, Richmond

Musicians Watch eh? What a funny name you have. I see you've only ever left one other comment on BITE and it was pretty much the same thing about another pub. You don't think the problem might be you?

The Bay View, Swansea

The lease on this pub has just been sold (August 2005). Expect a new landlord and a bit of a liven up in the coming months. The new landlord was previously running The Racing Page in Richmond, London.

The Black Boy, Winchester

for once i agree with everything this usally bitter and twisted conniwot character (below) has said. a great little pub. if you're new to it, be sure to take time to have a good look around - the walls, ceiling and even the loos are adorned with all manner of tat.

The Westgate Inn, Winchester

Used to love going to this pub for some of the best food in town. Local produce, excellently prepared. The landlord's a friendly chap who'll talk your ear off about when he went to Australia to watch the rugby world cup.

Then they outsourced the kitchen and it's now just another unremarkable, dime-a-dozen indian restaurant ... I rarely visit this once excellent local pub now.

Old Gaol House, Winchester

Actually, it did used to be the city gaol. However it's now a dingy dark pub where you're likely to stick to the carpet. During the daytime it's populated by the local aged alcoholics and weekend evenings see the student/child crowd pour in for cheap drinks. But even the kids don't stay for long - just a few to get them on the way before heading off to somewhere not so grim. DON'T even think about trying the food here.

Savannah, Winchester

this is a VERY ordinary bar. food quality has gone down the tube in the last couple of years - barely basic pub fare really frozen burgers and microwaved lasagne. was desperately in need of refurbishment when it was Muswells. they did the decor up, but everthing else went down hill. cheap drinks and the chav crowd keep it going on weekends when its packed to the rafters. can only assume the management is all about moving quantity of product at those times to make up for poor performance during the week. shame really, had potential to be a nice bar (it was never going to be a pub).

Greens Wine Bar, Winchester

Just had to comment on "anonymous" of 5 May... I've always found the staff here to be cheerful, friendly and helpful.

The Trout, Itchen Abbas

I've only been to this pub twice in the last two years and every time I promise myself I'll come back soon.

The food is very good. smoking and non-smoking sections are at opposite ends of the building and seperated by the bar.

The staff are very friendly and the landlord more than welcoming.

It was a quiet Tuesday night when we last went. My wife ordered off-menu and the chef even came out to chat about her order and suggest a minor alteration. He was very friendly and gave the impression that he just wanted to make sure we had the best dining experience (there was no hint that my wife's order was anything but a pleasure to prepare).

We were very impressed with the food. There's a reasonable selection of wines and the beers mentioned in a previos post.

Ample parking and some lovely walks to be had in the area.

The Original Porthouse, Winchester

If you find yourself in this joint, you know you've hit rock bottom.

Enough said.

Greens Wine Bar, Winchester

A great little bar in the centre of Winchester. Has a real bistro feel to it by day. Excellent food at a reasonable price prepared by the proprietor himself.

Book in for beaujolais day if you can... it's a real treat.

Great spot for an after work tipple. Weeknights are also okay. On Friday and Saturday evenings it is crammed (and I mean crammed) with kids just old enough to be there.

The Forester, Winchester

This is a good little pub. Well, I say pub, but it's more of a bar. Great cocktails and reasonable selection of beers and wines.

I like that they exhibit local art on the walls. The overall design is contemporary (if a little DIY in places), although at times it does try a little hard... sometimes a cool looking chair or stool can be very uncomfortable to sit on.

Food is excellent.

Have met the manager on the odd occasion. Nice bloke. Very friendly. Runs a good bar.

I recommend it if you're looking for something that's not the traditional pub.

The Bishop On The Bridge, Winchester

Not a bad pub. Above average pub food and reasonably large and airy. GREAT beergarden by the River for sunny days.

Staff are always fairly friendly and almost as efficient.

A very mixed crowd but good for escaping the student madhouses elsewhere in town.

The Bishop, East Dulwich

Went to this pub for the first time on 25/03/05. It had just re-opened after a major refurb... you could still smell the fresh paint. It's a very cool bar with a good selection of drinks. didn't try the food so can't comment on that.

However, I must say that the staff were excellent. Prompt, friendly and faultless service. The publican took the time to remember many patrons names (on a very busy night), which was a particularly nice touch.

When I'm next in the area, I'll certainly be dropping in. I recommend you do too.
