The Foresters, Church Crookham

Visited here one evening with family for a meal. The pub is located in a rural location therefore it's popular with walkers and is dog friendly too. There's also a nice beer garden to the rear of the pub as well.

The pub is effectively split in two - one part intended for food service and the other mainly for normal drinking. It's nicely furnished inside and has a nice welcoming feel to it.

The food was great, all of us could barely finish our main courses as the portions were quite generous. With drinks and 4 meals it came to £86, not cheap but it was a celebratory meal.

I really liked it here, this was my first visit. Yes, it's not cheap but the service is good and the food excellent. It's worth stopping by for quick pint too if you happen to be passing by.

Lulworth Cove Inn, West Lulworth

Visited here with friends after a walk with the dogs. It looks like it has been recently renovated especially the toilets which were immaculate!

I didn't have any alcohol as we were driving but there were 3 Badger Brewery ales on tap. We all ate there too and the food was excellent, good selection nicely cooked. All the staff were friendly and we were glad we found this place before driving home.

This was a very nice pub experience, I'd recommend stopping by.

Pitcher & Piano, Nottingham

Visited here one Saturday afternoon, it''s only a short walk from the city centre near the Lace Market tram stop . It''s a restored church with fabulous décor set over two floors with a combination of open plan seating and table booths as well. They had two ales on which were Boondoggle and Blue Monkey Brewery BG Tips, of which I had the latter. I also had the duck leg to eat which was quite nicely prepared.

Overall, it was an enjoyable visit as the service was reasonably good and the staff friendly. It was nice to find a spare table in a bar/pub in Nottingham on a Saturday afternoon on a Forest match day. It''s worth going just for the impressive interior.

Ye Olde Swiss Cottage, Swiss Cottage

Visited here one Sunday. For me, this is probably one of the most unique pubs in London. It's owned by Samuel Smith's so therefore it's a similar theme to their other pubs if you've ever visited one of them. It's right by Swiss Cottage Underground station and it's easily located from there using exit #3.

The interior is nicely furnished with comfy armchairs and sofas. There's no music so it's a good place to meet up with friends for a chat over a drink. I had a pint of Sovereign ale (£3.16) and pulled pork pie which tasty enough.

This pub is a nice refuge from the hustle and bustle of London outside. I do like Sam Smiths boozers as they retain many traditional features and their food and drink is good value as well. I do recommend a visit if ever you're nearby.

Wyndham Arms, Cullompton

Visited this pub one Friday evening for something to eat and drink whilst staying nearby. This is a historic pub in the centre of the quaint village of Kentisbeare, parking is a bit tight here it has to be said.

The interior is bright and cosy and also what you may expect of a rural pub. They had 3 ales on offer from the Otter Brewery. The food was good and the staff were great despite being rushed off their feet.

It's great seeing a rural pub thriving and serving the local community in the face of so many pub closures. It was very busy but also very welcoming, it's both child and dog friendly too at the Wyndham Arms. I do recommend you make a visit.

The Captain Kidd, Wapping

Situated in former warehouses this riverside pub is roughly 2-3 minute from Wapping station. The pub itself is on 3 floors - the top floor being a function room. The interior is very traditional which you'd expect from Sam Smith's boozers with great views of London and the Thames from the beer garden and other parts of the pub.

The 1st floor is the restaurant area with typical S Smiths fayre being served. The food was good and fairly priced, nothing out of the ordinary it has to be said. Again, the beer is OBB, Alpine Lager etc, exactly the same as you get from other Sam Smith's outlets. The atmosphere in the pub was relaxed and suitable for families if visiting in the daytime.

This was an enjoyable visit, the staff were friendly with the pub having a welcoming feel to it. It's worth a visit to The Captain Kidd if you're in the vicinity.

The Queens Arms, Bosley

Pub located on the main A523 road, I visited here one Saturday evening. It seems it mainly caters for diners but that didn't matter so much though Hobgoblin was the only real ale on draught. They have a great food menu for which this place is mainly renowned for. Adjacent is a large beer garden for those warmer days outside which all very family friendly too.

The meal I has was very nice and the guy who served behind the bar was very accommodating as well, I would recommend a visit here mainly for the fayre that's on offer.

The Navigation Inn, Nottingham

Visited here one Saturday in August. Tried one of their gourmet burgers which is a speciality of this pub. Up to 8 real ales to choose from so spoilt for choice on that front. The interior is quite modern and there is outside seating by the canal.

This is one of the better pubs that I've been to in Nottingham. The staff were friendly and the service decent enough so I hope to return at some point in the future.

The Duke of Cambridge, Tilford

Rural pub located approximately 1 mile outside Tilford village.

Visited this pub one lunchtime whilst passing by. 4 real ales on tap including Ringwood Fortyniner and a couple from Hogs Back Brewery. Nice interior and well appointed patio seating which is great for the warmer months. Extensive food menu but just opted for a chicken sandwich with a side of chunky chips. The staff I found were friendly and the service good.

It's not cheap here by any means but judging how busy it was in the car park it would appear that there were plenty of people who are willing to pay that little bit more to eat and drink in pleasant surroundings. It does seem to be a popular pub and I gather it's recommended to reserve a table if you're looking to eat there in the evenings. Overall I enjoyed my visit and would recommend the Duke of Cambridge.

The Heron Hotel, Aldershot

Yep, it's been a Co-Op local store for a while.

When will this endless stream of pub closures finish?

25 Sep 2013 00:15

The Fox Inn, Lower Bourne

Very nice pub located on a main road on the outskirts of Farnham.

Visited here one lunchtime with friends for a meal and something to eat. Good selection of ales (at least 3 that I could see) and large food menu including a specials board too. The food was well cooked and generous portions too. The pub seems to be wanting to attract passing trade so there are signs welcoming walkers and dog owners alike.

This isn't the liveliest pub that I've been to but if you're looking to grab a nice meal or a swift pint whilst passing by then you could do a lot worse than here.

The Prince of Wales, Aldershot

Has now been bulldozed - yet another pub consigned to the history books

:-(

2 Aug 2013 00:55

The Dickens Inn, Tower Hill

Redeveloped former dock warehouse that has been turned into a smart pub a stones throw away from a lot of London's main tourist attractions. The building is split on 3 levels - ground floor Tavern bar, 1st floor pizzeria and 2nd is a grill. The pub has outdoor and balcony seating and the interior retains a traditional feel with a lot of the wooden beams left exposed.

4 real ales on tap so tried the Doombar at £4.25 (YIKES!) a pint. Had the Hunters Chicken which was £9.95 that was very nice too. Staff were mainly Eastern Europeans but were friendly and efficient and the toilets looked on the whole well maintained.

Great pub, great location but some how I doubt if I'll return mainly because of it being quite pricey though that's not to say I wouldn't put anyone off from visiting a unique London pub.

17 Jun 2013 20:58

The Garden Gate, Aldershot

A pub that has appeared in the Good Beer Guide a few times. Usually 3 or 4 ales available. Quite small inside with the bar area divide in two and a function room in the rear. Host quiz nights, poker evenings and the occasional live music too. Not a pub that I personally would make a beeline for but at least it's good to see pubs like this surviving in the face of so many closures.

23 Apr 2013 23:18

The Unicorn, Aldershot

Average pub with no real ales on tap. The owners it would appear do go to great lengths to provide evening entertainment like karaoke and live music. Wide open plan inside with big TV screen. Maybe OK for a swift pint and some may like it there but not really my sort of pub.

23 Apr 2013 23:11

The Half Moon Inn, Sherborne

Visited this pub one lunchtime for something to eat and drink. The pub is surprisingly big and is family friendly though the décor might need updating a little in places. Took advantage of the 2 for £10 main meal deal and had a pint of well kept Jester beer which was one of 4 real ales on tap. The toilets were generally clean and the service was friendly and efficient.

Overall, I couldn't really fault the visit and would recommend you visiting too.

The Alma, Heath End

Stopped off for a quick pint one evening. Good selection of ales including Olde Trip at £3.50 a pint. Quite nice decor inside including log fire and sofas which looks quite recently changed. Appears to have occaissional evening entertainment too.

Worth a look IMHO if you're passing by.

Charters Bar, Peterborough

Paid a visit here one afternoon. Old Dutch barge moored on the river Nene converted into a Thai restuarant on the upper deck and a real ale bar on the lower deck. The adjoining river bank doubles as a beer garden with a beer tent and kiosk which is used on busy days. Being close to Peterborough Utd it gets very busy on matchdays particularly on the lower deck.

This place definately woth a visit not only for its uniqueness but also for the great range of beers available. The sort of place that is ideal to visit on a sunny afternoon!

Dick Whittington, Gloucester

Decided to visit after it had previously been listed in the Good Beer Guide. Sadly though only Bombardier was on and Severn Cider on tap too. Decided to go for BBQ ribs which to my horror were still frozen inside! They did give me another meal and were apologetic about it. There was only one person behind the bar doing all the serving at lunchtime which added to the wait.

Despite the bad experience this does look a fairly decent boozer and it was quite busy when I was there so I assume it is quite popular here - I must've been just been unlucky.

The Pitcher and Piano, Bristol

This is one the better P&P pubs that I've been to. Quite nicely decorated inside with bookcases and sofas situated along the quayside. Didn't try any food but did have a pint of ESB which was pretty fine. It was quite busy for a Tuesday night and it seemed popular with the ladies!

Decent place to stop off on a bar crawl or take your girlfriend for a bevvy or two.

The Plough, Lower Cadsden

Would like to visit here but I'm worried I may leave my kids behind.

14 Jun 2012 22:05

The Cross Keys, Covent Garden

This is a little gem of a pub in central London. Nipped in here for a swift pint and quite enjoyed the visit.

The interior is quite dark and there are lots ornaments and photos on the wall which adds a bit of character. This isn't a big pub by any means and the steps down to the gents take some negotiating. It's 3.40 for a pint of real ale of which there were 4 to choose from. There's no food on offer as far as I could see but wouldn't fit into this pub anyway. The staff were friendly and it was a fairly lively atmosphere inside.

If ever you're passing it's worth nipping in for a quick pint.

Via Bar and Restaurant, Nottingham

I quite liked liked this place on my visit one lunchtime. Quite a cosy interior with outside seating as well. As far as I could see there was only one ale on tap that was Bombardier priced at 2.95. Normal sort of pub fayre on the menu which was fairly well priced. Staff were polite too.

Doesn't seem to be as busy as other places nearby so if you're looking for somewhere for a quick bite and a drink then I'd recommend a visit.

The Pub, Valletta

British-style pub located in the centre of Valletta behind the Grand Master's Palace. It's very small almost as if you're drinking in someone's front room but that perhaps adds to the uniqueness of this place. The interior is made up of Royal Navy memorabelia and photos and press cuttings of the late, great Oliver Reed who collapsed in here whilst in Malta filming Gladiator. There's TV in one corner often showing sports channels. If ever you go upstairs to use the loo it's worth taking a couple of extra minutes to read all the graffetti!

Bombardier is on tap as is Guiness and the local Maltese brew Cisc. It's worth noting that The Pub often closes after 6pm unless there's a large party or Royal Navy ship in town.

It's definately worth a visit here. You're likely to meet other passing Brit tourists and ex-pats there though on my visit a couple of Maltese locals were enjoying a pint in there too. It's a very unusual pub and THE place to pay homage to Ollie Reed!

17 Feb 2012 19:25

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

Visited this pub one lunchtime during the week as it's a pub that I've always wanted to check out. There were only a few people in there at that time but can't say how busy it gets in the evening as it may well be packed to the rafters with commuters being so close to Blackfriars station. Had a pint of Jaipur IPA which was 3.15 though there were 3 other ales available. The staff are friendly though I did have to wait a while for food that I ordered. All I had was a sausage bap which at 4.95 I thought was a little steep even for London.

Overall I do recommend a visit if only for the amazing interior - I don't think I've seen another pub like it. Most tables are candlelit which adds to the atmosphere. See you for yourself.

The Lord Moon Of The Mall, Whitehall

This is a fairly standard Wetherspoons. Not outstanding but not bad either. Didn't see any problems with the toilets on my visit so perhaps the hygiene issues mentioned previously have now been sorted.

Good selection of ales as you'd expect from a Spoons and the food service was quite reasonable too. Popular with tourists being so close to Trafalgar Square but seemed to get quiter in there after 7pm - I don't if that's normal for this place?

If you're familiar with Wetherspoons etc then there's no surprises here. I was fairly contented with my visit and never encountered any real problems or something that I could really fault them on.

The Princess Royal, Runfold

Long established pub on the Hogs Back that was taken over by Fullers a few years ago. Has also been refurbished in that time making it more open plan with a restaurant created converted from a function room. The toilets are some of the best pub loos I've ever seen! Usual Fullers beers on offer to which I opted for the Seafarers which was nicely kept. The food (steak & ale pie) was also tasty and the service was excellent.

Some purists may look upon this as more of restaurant that just so happens to have a bar rather than the other way round but I guess it's now a reality of todays pub trade that they have to be like this in order to survive. It's a nice atmosphere here and somewhere the whole family would like.

15 Dec 2011 11:56

Toby Carvery, Frimley

Massively popular pub no matter what time of the day you visit. Have been here at noon mid-week and have seen it packed out with the blue rinse brigade - I thought maybe a SAGA coach trip had turned up!! If you've been to Toby Carvery's before it's pretty much like all the others though the bar does real ale so a pint of Youngs does go down well. There is outside seating but the majority of people visiting come here to pile their food up as high as they can in the carvery.

As with all these type of places you don't really go there for the pub experience but mainly for the cheap food that's on offer. It's still worth a visit though.

11 Nov 2011 18:14

The Comedy, Piccadilly

Visited here one lunchtime during the week and found it surprisingly quiet. Had 4 ales on tap so I decided to try the Brains SA Gold which was very nicely kept. There is a food menu which consists of your mainly typical pub grub though I have to say the steak & ale pie was tasty. Needless to say the interior is comedy-themed with pictures of famous comedians of past and present so I would like to do one of the comedy nights there sometime in the future.

I can't say what it's like there in the evenings as it maybe totally different from the daytime but I couldn't really fault it from my visit and I would recommend a visit if ever you're passing.

16 Oct 2011 14:09

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Yarmouth

Checked out this pub after it was recommended in the Good Beer Guide. Looks like it's been recently refurbished with perhaps making it more "family friendly". There were three ales on offer of which I opted for the Island Brewery which was quite nicely kept. Food is served all day but doesn't include your usual pie & mash fayre but I tried the chef's pasta which was quite nice. Staff were friendly and the service was good. There's a pool table inside and a patio area outside for al fresco eating and drinking.

IMHO it's worth a visit if ever you're waitng for the ferry.

26 Sep 2011 21:39

Charlie Chaplin, Elephant and Castle

Set within a concrete jungle, it's definately not the sort of place to go for a romantic/civilised drink! Looks dodgy from the outside but I've been in more threatening pubs than this though the UV lights in the toilets give an idea as to what sort of clientel this pub attracts. Plus points are the staff seem friendly and they have various theme nights though disappointingly just had Websters on tap so I don't think they'll be making The Good Beer Guide anytime soon. This place is just about OK and fairly cheap too but I think only skint students and the great unwashed will ever want to return.

5/10.

20 Sep 2011 10:40

Katzenjammers Bierkeller and Restaurant, Southwark

Decided to make a visit to what it was like there. There are 8 German and 1 Belgium beers on draught plus numerous other continental bottled beers available too. Had the pork chops to eat which was very nice and the service was prompt and very friendly. It can get quite loud and boisterous in there and I would definately advise reserving a table if there's 4 or more in your party especially if you're planning on going on a Friday or Saturday night. I think it would mainly appeal to a younger but I'd still recommend a visit if only for the novelty value.

7/10.

20 Sep 2011 08:51

The French Horn, Alton

Historic pub on the outskirts of Alton. Nice surroundings and have a coal fire during the winter. Food served throughout the day and the interior whilst modern does have a traditional feel to it. Visited there on a Sunday evening and surprisingly found it quite busy which is always a good sign. There were 6 ales from which to choose from so I decided to opt for the Alton Pride (3.10) that was nicely kept. They have previously been listed in the Good Beer Guide.

22 Jun 2011 17:29

Royal Staff, Aldershot

Fullers Pub in a residential area of Aldershot with a friendly clientel. Interior has lots of sporting trophies and photos. Other things include digital jukebox, beer garden and large TV showing SKY and ESPN. They also do the occaissional entertainment and karaoke evenings too.

On my visit I tried a pint of Seafarers (3.40) that was nicely kept but didn't try the other ale on offer which was London Pride. Overall, it's not a bad pub and seems fairly popular with the local community though I prefer other pubs in Aldershot.

20 May 2011 09:32

The Litten Tree, Bath

DATE OF VISIT: 10/05/11

I see this pub is now called THE BEAU NASH so I dare say it's had a makeover since the previous comments were made.

At first I thought it was another Wetherspoons but I gather it used to be a bank. The interior is quite ornately finished with various pictures of 'Beau Nash' and Bath of yesteryear hanging on the wall as well as large screen TVs showing SKY. The toilets were clean and there is a function room available for hire.

I had a pint of Gem which was well kept and had the steak to eat - both of which were enjoyable. There's a selection of 5 ales + a few ciders and there was quite an extensive lunchtime food menu.

Overall I couldn't fault this pub. The staff were friendly and the service good. I visited during the lunchtime so I can't say what's like there later on but from what I was looking for it ticked all the right boxes.

Old Orleans, Guildford

Yep, went passed the other day and mysteriously it's still closed.

17 Apr 2011 15:31

The Crimea Inn, Aldershot

This pub has recently been voted "Best Pub in Aldershot" in the local newspaper. Interior has been updated in 2010 and the log fire has now been re-introduced. There are often 2-3 ales on tap including 6X, Hobgoblin, Hogs Back TEA, and Tribute amongst others. There are often theme nights too with karaoke most Fridays, quiz nights every Wednesday and pool and darts matches on other days. The occaisional Beer and Cider Festivals are also taking place.

IMHO, I hope this pub will make it into the next edition of the Good Beer Guide.

18 Mar 2011 19:21

Company Inn, Nottingham

DATE OF VISIT: 11/09/10

Fairly standard Lloyds bar that's split on two levels. Quite a good range of beers as you'd expect from a Wetherspoons. Interior quite nice with sofas and large screen TVs showing SKY Sports. It can get very busy especially on match days when Forest are playing at home but I'm pleased to say they did have a lot of people serving so I didn't have to wait too long and there was a few door security too. I did feel though the staff are were a little eager to get you to drink and eat your food as quickly as possible so as to get the next lot of people on tables so there was a feeling of being on a conveyor belt in terms of experiencing this place.

All in all, not too bad a place to visit.

16 Sep 2010 18:29

Augustiner Keller, Munich

This is an amazing place. We were told by someone in the know this was the best beer garden in Munich. It seats up to 5000 people; 2000 table service, 3000 self service. Most of it is outdoors sitting in amongst chestnut trees which is great during the summer. Even going on a Wednesday evening we only just about managed to find a table as we arrived at 8pm. Therefore if you wish to visit without struggling to get a table the trick is to get there earlier as I think loads of people go there after work. The food was quite nice German fayre and the was 6 a litre (if I remember correctly!).

Definately worth a visit if you're in Munich to have a beer garden experience. It's only about a 10-15 minute from the Hauptbahnhof station so quite centrally located. If ever I return to Munich I could well be tempted to return...!

3 Sep 2010 16:54

The Fox and Pelican, Grayshot

Went there one Sunday lunchtime and needless to say they were quite busy. Told there was a 40 minute wait for food but in the end it was only 20 minutes that we had to wait. It looks like it's been recently decorated so although it has a modern feel it still retains some of it's charm. Usual Fuller's beers available including Seafarers and Honey Dew.

The staff were friendly and attentative and IMHO it's worth a look in if ever you're passing by.

2 Sep 2010 19:47

The Mitre, Shaftesbury

Very nice pub in Shaftesbury town centre. The terrace has great views which I guess attracts a lot of tourists. Had a nice pint of Young's Gold which went down well. Had herb chicken to eat which very nice although they weren't able to give me a couple of my first choices as they'd sold out but it wasn't too big a deal.

Staff were friendly and the toilets were reasonably. Overall, my visit was a positive one and I'd recommend anyone else going there too.

8/10.

22 Jul 2010 18:20

The King William Inn, Glastonbury

Quite a nice pub in the town centre. The steak was excellent and the Butcombe Ale was well kept. Staff were friendly and the atmosphere was a bit jovial. The interior looked a bit drab but that's only a minor gripe and would've liked to have tried the pool table.

8/10.

22 Jul 2010 17:29

The George and Pilgrim, Glastonbury

Decent enough pub in Glastonbury town centre. It's quite an old building so I'm sure there's a lot of history in it. The interior is traditional albeit a little dark. The staff are friendly and there were 3 ales available.

I didn't have any food but I think it's a good place to so. IMHO it's worth a visit if you're in the town centre.

7/10.

22 Jul 2010 17:22

Whistling Goose, Hull

Sort of bog standard Brewers Fayre-type place. Fairly non-descript interior that's family friendly at least. No ales to speak of but at least the food was decent and the portions generous. This is the sort of place that you'd just stop by to grab something to eat or where the unemployed spend most of their time to while the time away.

To be honest it did the job but it's more like a restaurant with a bar attached rather than the other way round. I wouldn't really want to spend an evening here but it's OK if you're looking to grab a quick bite to eat.

7/10.

5 Jul 2010 19:49

Green Dragon, Beverley

Very nice Nicholson's pub in Beverley town centre. As with the previous posting it's a narrow pub but does stretch a long way back and the interior is quite traditional popular with American tourists. The side alleyway is used for outside seating and a smoking area. The food was very nice and the service was friendly and efficient. There were 6 real ales available on my visit including a couple of World Cup themed beers.

It ticked all the right boxes upon my visit and it's worth stopping by to quench your thirst.

8/10.

5 Jul 2010 17:50

Ye Olde Macdonalds Farm, Alfreton

Fairly bland sort of pub but they appear to make an effort in providing entertainment at weekends. No ales available I'm afraid on my visit.

IMHO, it's really only worth visit for a swift pint and maybe enjoy the disco etc.

6/10

30 Apr 2010 20:15

Waggon and Horses, Alfreton

Fairly non-descript Wetherspoons. Seperate area for dining and large screen TVs so pretty similar to most other 'Spoons. Beer was well kept and the staff were friendly and the service prompt.

Good place to start a night out especially if you're watching the pennies.

The Prince of Wales, Aldershot

I've never been in here before but it has reopened. Perhaps someone could post a review of this place sometime...

The Buff, Orpington

DATE OF VIST: 03/02/10

Visited there with family for a lunch. Took advantage of their two meals for 9 promo and were good sized portions. Had a pint of Old Speckled Hen which went down well. The interior was quite smart and not too dated whilst the staff appeared to be friendly and helpful.

Overall, the visit was a positive experience though I can't say what it's like there in the evening as I went during lunchtime. Needless to say I would go back again.

9 Feb 2010 12:18

The Standard of England, Ash

Glad to see it reopened and totally refurbished. I hardly recognised it when I walked compared to how it used. All the jukeboxes, fruit machines et all have been cleared out - only the dart board survives. Guess they don't want any "undesirables" drinking there. Only have London Pride as an ale and they're hoping to do food in 2010. Given time, I'm hoping this'll be a decent boozer once again.

5 Jan 2010 15:05

The Bricklayers Arms, Ash

I think this place is now closed and to reopen as a Thai restuarant.

5 Jan 2010 14:59

The Derby Arms, Aughton

Great pub with a cosy feel with two coal fires to keep you warm during the colder weather. Real ales available including Arran Ale which at 1.50 a pint is excellent value. Food is very good too with big portions and it's worth having the all day breakfast.

I gather this pub has won a number of awards and from what I saw well deserved. Cheap ale, good service and nice food is a winning combination and is a blueprint for any successful pub.

24 Nov 2009 20:03

Jacaranda, Liverpool

If you're a Beatles fan you'd give this place 11/10. Because of the associated history with this being the venue of their first ever gig it's very much on the tourist trail with all the memorabelia throughout the pub not to mention one of Ringo Starr's drum kits above the bar! I agree with the other comments about having a good atmosphere. It's quite lively in there but at the same feels relaxed too. The drinks are very cheap too especially before 8pm but it's worth going in at anytime of the day IMHO.

Is it worth visiting? Very much so even if it's just for a quick drink so really no visit to Liverpool is complete without sampling this unique pub.

8/10

24 Nov 2009 18:38

Coopers, Liverpool

Very small so being in the city centre gets very crowded. This was my first Liverpool pub on arrival there so it was quite amusing seeing a guy playing the spoons then watching another bloke follow a woman into the ladies claiming there was a smoking at the back then not seeing them for half an hour or so. I guess this was welcome to Liverpool! The pub itself does have a cosy and traditional feel to it and the drinks are pretty cheap and well kept. The karaoke at night is quite loud and in your face (like some of the patrons) but if you can put up with that then it's a fairly unpretentious boozer. If not then try one of the many pubs nearby.

The Red Lion, Soho

Nice Sam Smiths pub in Central London that is a refuge from all the crowds. Interior is quite traditional with wood panelling throughout so it has retained it character down the years. The Lounge Bar upstairs is particularly cosy and probably the best part of the pub. Sovereign and OBB well kept and cheap prices too. Toilets were a bit manky with the usual grafetti that you become accustomed to in London.

All in all, I thought this is a decent pub to meet up with friends and have a civilised drink together. I maybe wrong but don't think there's a pub nearby than can better that..??

The Hare and Hounds, Donkey Town

Had a brief visit here one afternoon. Staff quite friendly and a reasonably nice interior. Had a pint of Sussex Brewery at 3.05. Also had a couple of other Badger ales on tap. They have a large screen TV for Sky Sports etc but also agree with other comments that I too got the impression that this is a locals pub.

This isn't a bad boozer by any means and OK for a swift pint if you're passing by but that's about it.

Dixies Arms, Bagthorpe

Very nice pub with a cosy atmosphere and open fire. Abbot and Black Sheep ales available.

Farriers, Guildford

This used to be the Three Pigeons but never went in under that ownership. This is quite nice pub in Guildford town centre. The interior is very ornate and has quite a plush feel to it. There were two ales on tap - Wadworth 6X and a Ringwood Brewery so I opted for a pint (3) of the latter. Also had a brie & bacon sandwich which at 6 quid I did think was a little steep though it was quite nice. The staff were friendly but the sandwich did take quite a while to arrive.

I wouldn't make a beeline to come here for an evening out but it is a decent enough pub for a lunchtime or afterwork drink.

16 Sep 2009 18:58

The Britannia, Guildford

This is quite a nice pub with a riverside location ideal for those lazy summer afternoons. The interior is quite smart and modern with large screen TVs dotted around. Had 4 ales on tap (all Shepherd & Neame) plus a few continental lagers too. I opted for the Master Brew which at 2.60 a pint was reasonably good value.

Personally, I prefer the White House 200 yards away but this is still quite a nice boozer and worth a look in.

14 Sep 2009 16:59

The Tweseldown, Church Crookham

Came in here for a swift pint on a Saturday afternoon and it seemed fairly quiet. Opted for a pint of Courage (3.05) that was well kept. The pub has a dart board, pool table, Sky TV and what appears to be a lounge/dining area. The decor is characterised by novelty signs etc and it has quite a welcoming feel to it.

It's worth popping in if you're passing by and is not too bad a pub.

14 Sep 2009 14:28

The Anchor Tap, Tower Bridge

Well done to Sam Smiths for helping to keep the traditional feel to their pubs. This pub has quite a cosy and relaxed feel to it. I can quite imagine the locals having a sing song around the piano! There's a lounge, pool room and beer garden with benches outside. Had the Sovereign beer which at 1.95 a pint is great value for London. The food is basic but not too bad nonetheless and the service was relatively good.

Overall, this is a good pub for meeting up with friends for a quiet drink. It's not overun with tourists nor drunk City workers out to get slosched after work. Worth a visit IMHO.

10 Sep 2009 07:08

The Wellington, Waterloo

Pubs within 500 yards of railway stations tend generally to be a bit naff so it was a surprise to find quite a decent one across the road from Waterloo. The interior is quite smart but the most impressive thing about this place are the Napoleonic War theme muriels on the walls and ceilings. There were only two ales on tap and the other usual lagers etc. It felt more like being in a Yates to be honest. It took a while to get served even though it was a Monday night and they weren't exactly being over run.

This pub is good if you want a swift pint or bite to eat or even to watch the sport on the large screen TVs but I felt there are better places nearby if you want to meet up with mates for a night out. Having said that I do recommend a visit if only to look at the impressive interior...

9 Sep 2009 10:50

The Horniman at Hays, Southwark

I agree with the other posts about the fantastic decor and great views over the Thames but it's very frustrating waiting to get served there. There's an impressive 7 ales available though the food was decent and the service prompt.

Is it worth a visit? Yes even though it may be flooded with tourists but with the range of beers and amazing London scenery who cares..?!?

9 Sep 2009 08:26

The Bells of Peover, Lower Peover

This is a very nice pub in the Cheshire countryside. There's an American flag flying outside probably in recognition that General Patton and other US top brass frequented here when they were stationed nearby. Certainly, there's a lot of WWII memorabelia that I'll take a closer look at whenever I'm in there next.

The pub itself is very nicely decorated and does have a cosy, traditional feel to it. There's a good selection of Robinson Brewery ales on tap and although I didn't have any food it did look nice and fairly reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and most ales were about 2.60 a pint.

Overall, this pub experience was a positve one and I would recommend a visit to all those who like their rural pubs and WWII history.

7 Sep 2009 11:12

The Fountain, Chichester

Nice pub on the former site of the South Gate in Chichester. Got quite an oldy-worldy feel to it in keeping with the area. Choice of 4 ales including 2 from Fullers and 1 Sussex Brewery offering. Food quite and service fairly fast. I noticed on the walls they also do live music and other entertainment.

All in all a nice venue especially if you want a swift pint and a bite to eat at lunchtime.

2 Jul 2009 11:44

Canal House, Nottingham

This is one of the most unusual pubs I've ever been in. I mean, how many pubs have got a canal barge moored in them?!

The building has been restored with a very nice feel to it. Huge selection of ales (mainly Castle Rock) and an even bigger selection of continental bottled beers. Had the steak and ale pie which was OK for 6.95.

Would I recommend a visit? Yes, by virtue of the massive range of beers and the unique surroundings. It's only a 2 minute walk from Nottingham railway station so it should be your first port of call if ever you are visiting.

9/10

15 Apr 2009 22:07

The Old Buttermarket, Canterbury

Enjoyed my visit here. Fairly quiet to start off with considering its city centre location. Food was tasty and they have a good selection of different pies to choose from. Staff are friendly and the toilets clean. Decor is quite modern but still has a cosy feel to it.

A nice pub well worth a vist.

26 Mar 2009 18:13

The Albion, Blackfriars

This isn't a bad pub but I guess being near the City makes it 'kin' expensive!

Good range of beers including Bombardier and Youngs and the interior is quite cosy. Had the steak and ale which although was quite nice seemed like it was a kiddies portion. I felt as if I need to get a Big Mac afterwards as I was still hungry. Being it was 9.90 I thought it was vastly overpriced for what it was.

This place is OK if maybe you want a swift pint in a congenial atmosphere. Otherwise, I recommend Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese just round the corner in Fleet Street for better value food and drink.

1 Jan 2009 19:01

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

Enjoyed my visit here with friends but wasn't as good as I was hoping. Went on a Saturday night when a few of the other bars were closed for private functions so therefore it got fairly busy. Very oldy-worldy feel to this place and I'm sure there's loads of history associated with it too. Usual, cheap Sam Smiths beer available and the staff seemed quite friendly.

Don't think I'll came back again as it's a case of been there and done it now go somewhere else though that's not to say I wouldn't recommend a visit. If I was to go again it would probably be during the daytime to perhaps fully appreciate it for what it is.

2 Nov 2008 19:06

Willems Park, Aldershot

Can't really call this a pub - it's more of a family-themed restaurant with a small bar facility. Came here with my family one lunchtime and took advantage of their 2 meals for 9 thing. The food itself was excellent with generous portions and the service was efficient and friendly. Only Boddingtons and Tetley on tap so nothing for the ale enthusiast to get excited about.

Would I return? Absolutely. If you're looking for somewhere that does cheap, no frills food in a congenial atmosphere then look no further than here. Yes, it is one of these modern family pub/restuarants tacked on to a Premier Inn but if you can accept that then you could do a whole lot worse than here...

2 Nov 2008 18:50

The Station, Woking

DATE OF VISIT: 27/10/08

Went here during lunchtime and surprised to find it very quiet considering its town centre location. The interior has a traditional feel though looks like it's been recently refurbished. Had a pint of Amstel but didn't realise they had IPA on and more disappointingly London Pride to accompany. Had the Hunters Chicken was fairly good value and quite nice. Staff were friendly and attentative but there was something about this place that doesn't make you want to stick around for long.

Would I go back? Sure I would but only for a lunchtime bite or if I was having a quick pint in the evening before moving on to somewhere else...

7/10

27 Oct 2008 16:22

The Lyceum, Strand

Very nice pub with a very traditional feel to it. Beer and food cheap as chips but if you've been to other sam Smiths pubs you know what to expect. Service good and staff friendly.

I do recommend a visit should you ever be in the area.

9/10

17 Oct 2008 12:25

The Old Customs House, Portsmouth

Can't really call this a pub as it's more of a restuarant that just so happens to serve beer. With that said it is very nice. Plush decor, good service, tasty food and a range of 5 or so Fullers beers so worth a visit.

Highly recommended for famillies and great for just resting your feet after a bit of retail therapy around Gunwharf. Not the sort of place if you'd go on a night out but great if you want somewhere to have a sit down meal.

8/10

16 Oct 2008 13:01

The Champion, Fitzrovia

Quite nice pub with impressive stained glass windows. Had a SS Best Bitter and cottage pie all of which came to 6.85. Toilets fairly clean and the staff friendly. There's quite an old feel to this place and I imagine it got quite smokey in there before the ban came into effect. Disappointed though the lounge bar is closed most evenings particularly at the weekend.

26 Sep 2008 06:34

The Scott Arms, Kingston

Enjoyed a visit here whilst staying in Dorset. Tastefully decorated though the loos left something to be desired.

Had a very nice meal which I didn't have long to wait for and the staff were very friendly. Huge wine list which probably indicates the sort of clientel there but a tad disappointed there was only one ale (Ringwood) on tap.

Would I visit again? Very much so. The plus points far outweigh the negatives. It's worth a visit if only for the magnificent view from the beer garden over the Purbeck Hills and Corfe Castle...

7/10

27 Jul 2008 12:33

The Standard of England, Ash

Have noticed this place has reopened presumably with new owners.

Have had some enjoyable evenings there in the past. It'll be interesting to see if there's been any improvements from what was before...

8 Jun 2008 21:30

The Horn, Reading

This is an excellent pub if you're looking for somewhere to have a quiet pint or something to eat. Had the chicken breast to eat which was very nice and very good value too. Disappointed that Bombardier was the only ale available. Staff were friendly but alas the toilets were somewhat grotty.

This ain't a bad pub but the only purpose you'd go here for is a bite to eat or just a chilled pint. Otherwise best go elsewhere...

7/10

7 Jun 2008 18:07

The Ship and Shovell, Charing Cross

DATE OF VISIT: 21/05/08

First impressions were that it was decorated in a traditional way and seemed quite welcoming though I never went to both parts of the pub. Good choice of ales. I opted for the Hopping Hare (3 a pint) and had the stake & ale pie which was very nice. Toilets were clean and the staff friendly. It seems to me that it's mainly frequented by city-types who just want a quick pint during a lunch break. It's not the sort of place I'd go to to spend an evening there but if you're waiting for a train or just passing by then that's fine but otherwise I wouldn't make a beeline to go there.

7/10

22 May 2008 09:17

The Bridge Inn, Dulverton

This is an excellent pub in a great location.

Good choice of ales including Otter Ale & Exmoor Brewery. Food was nice and served reasonably quickly.

If you're a rambler or cyclist going through Exmoor then I do recommend a stop here to quench your thirst.

20 May 2008 21:50

The Funky End, Aldershot

This used to be a gay & lesbian pub when this was The Southwestern but definately not now. It's more likely to be inhabited by metrosexuals because of it's trendy interior. They once done some filming in here for the TV series Changing Rooms (I think?!?) with Nick Knowles.

As one of the earlier posts quite rightly said there are no ales available but only ones like Carling, Stella etc. Quiz nights on Wednesdays are good fun and worth going to and the staff are friendly.

This is the sort of place where you'd go if you were on an office night out or if you are getting ready to go out clubbing. If you're over 35 then you may prefer to visit before 5pm...

14 Apr 2008 12:47

The Lion Brewery, Ash

DATE OF VISIT: 12/04/08

This is a very good pub and should receive 10 out of 10 for all the charity work they've done down the years.

The pub itself is fairly small and divided in two. One side of the bar has the pool table and juke box and the other hosts the many live music nights. The interior decor is adorned with photos from previous Ash Music Festivals and charity work for which they're quite rightly proud of. I had a pint of Green King IPA though I'd have preferred to of have tried the Ringwood Brewery which on this occaision wasn't available. I've haven't the food there nor have been up there much during the evening.

Is it worth a visit? Very much so. The people there are friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming. The only disappointment was the lack of choice of ales but if you can put up with that then it's well worth a visit...

14 Apr 2008 08:52

Ben Crouch's Tavern, Fitzrovia

DATE OF VISIT: 09/04/08

Decided to have a look in whilst out down Oxford Street. I have been to other Eerie Pub Co ones before in Nottingham and the Black Widow down Gloucester Road all of which have a goth/horror theme.

Disappointed there were no ales available that day so opted for the Straropramen instead. Also had the rump stake all of which came to 12.21. The toilets were clean but as I only visited at lunchtime I couldn't say how busy this place gets during the evening.

Would I recommend this place? Yes by virtue of it's novelty value and it's close proximity to Oxford Street making it ideal to rest those weary feet after hitting the shops. If you're a tradionalist when it comes to drinking then this may not be for you and it feels as if you're having a pint whilst visiting the London Dungeon but otherwise if you're not too serious about your drinking then I guess you could do much worse...

7/10

11 Apr 2008 12:26

Gaffers Row, Crewe

Not bad Spoons pub. I opted for the Pickles ale and a traditional breakfast all of which came to less than a fiver. Service was good though one of my friends didn't get his baked beans with his breakfast.

The interior decor is very modern as are the toilets though there is a gas fire in the middle of the pub.

All in all I was satisfied with the experience though as I was only there in the middle of the day I can't vouch for what it's like in the evening...

10 Mar 2008 21:08

The Outback Volunteer, Aldershot

This pub is currently closed with FOR SALE BOARDS outside of it. I'll post again if and when it ever re-opens...

6 Mar 2008 10:34

The Roebuck Inn, Nottingham

IMHO this is one of the better 'Spoons that I have been to. I know most of them are all pretty much the same but I did have a nice pint of Nottinghamshire Brewery beer and I unexpectedly saw the roof terrace which'll be a great relief to all you smokers!

In all I enjoyed the visit though as I went mid-afternoon may've been the best time to go as the evenings could quite well be another kettle of fish...

7/10

4 Feb 2008 20:10

The Magna Carta, Lincoln

I really liked this pub. The food was good, toilets clean and staff friendly. Had a pint of Marstons which slid down well and the pub decor wasn't too over the top.

After the climb up Steep Hill it's worth visiting and having a well earned pint...

4 Feb 2008 20:01

The Eagle, Cambridge

DATE OF VISIT: 28/11/07

After much walking around finding somewhere to eat and rest my feet I decided to take my chance and pay a visit to the Eagle. On the outside there is a notice proclaiming that theologians Crick and Watson frequented there on a regular basis. As there were lots of people there it's usually a good sign of a good pub though it was a bit difficult getting a table because of this.

Got myself a pint of XNXX (I think?) which was 2.90 and grabbed some steak and ale pie from the servery which came 6.75. The food was very nice and you can ask them to pile it up if you wanted. Went and sat in the RAF room which is adorned with flying photos and WWII memorabelia. Apparantly The Eagle was refurbished about 15 years ago but fortunately has still got plenty of character. The toilets were reasonably clean and the staff friendly. There is a courtyard area has patio heaters for all the smokers.

Would I go again should I ever visit Cambridge another time? Yes and I would recommend a visit as it's perfectly situated for the city centre shopping and historical part of Cambridge. For me, it ticked all the right boxes but as I was desperate for somewhere to eat and sit down it's fair to say that I was easily pleased...

30 Nov 2007 19:07

The Salutation Inn, Nottingham

Had a very enjoyable beer (Hop a Doodle Doo) and some nice grub which was served quite quickly. The pub itself has quite a lot of character and dates back to 1240. There's a notice saying that part of the building is haunted and there's a diagram showing it's on top of Saxon caves. The toilets were clean and look as if they've recently been refurbished.

Overall I enjoyed the visit though as I visited at lunchtime I can't say what it's like in the evening...

8/10

30 Nov 2007 18:45

Ice Wharf, Camden

Met a friend here for a meal and drink one lunchtime. I really like this pub and it's in a great location by the canal. We sat outside by I did get pestered by a wino who wanted to borrow 38p to buy another can of Stella. The food was nice and I had a pint of the guest ale BOB (Gloucestershire Brewery) which at 1.99 was good value. The interior is funky and the toilets were clean as you'd expect from a Spoons pub.

Reading through some of the previous comments it doesn't look particularly nice but as I went during the daytime I did very much enjoy the visit and recommend stopping off there if you've just tramped round Camden Market...

26 Sep 2007 14:09

The Abbot, Redhill

I came in here for a quick pint as I'd just missed my train and had another hour to kill. Major disappointment is that I couldn't see any ales on tap so had to settle for a Carling instead. The interior is quite cosy and the toilets were clean.

My impressions are is this ain't a bad pub but equally I'd only recommend going there if you had to do the same as me which was waiting for your train to turn up...

26 Sep 2007 13:45

O'Neills, Soho

DATE OF VISIT: 13/08/07

Quite nice pub in the heart of theatre land. I ordered the Stake & Guiness pie and a Grolsch all of which came to 10.70. The toilets were clean and the staff attentative though as I visited at midday it may not be the same in the evening. Regrettably there were only lagers available so real ale enthusiasts may want to try elsewhere.

As chain pubs go this ain't bad but for me doesn't quite tick all the boxes to be a really good one...

14 Aug 2007 16:41

The Crimea Inn, Aldershot

Quite nice pub in Aldershot. Had a pint of Adnams (2.70) which was ok but would've preferred the Bombardier which wasn't available. Didn't have any food but did notice they do Sunday roasts. Interior is reasonably clean as were the toilets and there's a dart board and pool table there too. Friday nights are karaoke nights which generate a really good atmosphere.

IMHO this is one of the better pubs in the area as you don't feel as if you're about to get your head kicked in unlike some other establishments in Aldershot...

14 Jul 2007 07:32

The Barley Mow, Tilford

DATE OF VISIT: 07/06/07

Quite nice country pub with good selection of ales including Bombardier. I had the Abbott Ale which very well kept. The pub itself is fairly small and it's adorned with pictures of Tilford Cricket Club. Toilets were ok and the overall appearance of the pub seems alright. We sat out in the beer garden by the river which gives the pub a really nice touch especially during the summer. Didn't have any food but there appears to be quite a substantial menu available.

I would recommend a visit and I rate this pub 7/10.

12 Jun 2007 21:14

The Eagle and Child, Oxford

DATE OF VISIT: 21/05/07

Very nice pub a short stones' throw from Oxford city centre. I mainly wanted to visit it because of it's associated history with some of it's former clientel (Tolkein, CS Lewis, Amis etc). As you can imagine there are various references to these literary giants adorned on the walls including a plaque from CAMRA. The staff were friendly and helpful and the toilets weren't brilliant but I've seen much worse. I had a pint of Brakspeare and a club sandwich that was quite tasty all of which came to 7.85.

I do very much recommend a visit just for the history of the place. Because of that expect to see loads of fat Americans wandering around but nonetheless if ever you should visit raise your pint and toast the authors who found their inspiration there...

24 May 2007 18:41

The Swan Hotel, Arundel

Very smart pub in the centre of Arundel that I visited on 28/04/07. I had a cheese & brie backed potato with a pint of Fullers IPA of which came to 8.90. The toilets were clean and the staff friendly. Interior is a mixture of traditional and modern decor with a large screen showing Sky Sports. I've marked this 8 out of 10 - I would recommend a visit...

30 Apr 2007 21:11

The Victoria Inn, Milton Keynes

Nice small pub with jukebox, pool table and dartboard. I didn't have any food but did have a London Pride which at 2.40 isn't too bad value. The toilets were clean but it does get very smokey on busy nights.

15 Apr 2007 21:29

The Cittie of Yorke, Holborn

This is an excellent Sam Smiths pub and I believe one of the oldest boozers in London. There are three bars including one downstairs in the cellar which is usually only used for private functions. The interior has an oldy-worldy feel without being in anyway tacky and there are a number of booths for that cosy evening beer. The toilets were clean and the staff generally friendly. Of course with it being a SSs pub the beer prices are good - 1.72 for a pint of Old Brewery beer.

I've given it a 9 out of ten as I haven't tried the food but I do nonetheless recommend a visit if you do happen to be in the vicinty...

26 Feb 2007 17:44

The Princess Louise, Holborn

Visited this pub last Saturday (24/02/07) and it's not too bad. All the usual Sam Smiths beers and ciders on tap. Never went into the toilets or tried the food. As it was a Saturday evening it was nigh on impossible to get a seat or table but having the upstairs lounge bar closed was rather annoying. The sign outside proclaiming it was once voted 'BEST LONDON PUB INTERIOR' is easy to see as it's quite ornately done but not to my taste anyway! If you like Sam Smiths pubs I'd recommend you try the Citie of Yorke a bit further along High Holborn - you're more likely to be able to sit down there...

;)

26 Feb 2007 17:07

Old Orleans, Guildford

I wouldn't recommend visiting the bar only if you wanted a swift one before watching a film in the Odeon cinema next door. Haven't been to the restaurant for a while but as I remember specialised in American style cuisine which was fairly nice. I think everyones' been to one of theses contrived theme bars in their time and this like most of them is very much of a muchness!

10 Jul 2006 21:07

The Dairymans Daughter, Arreton

Visited this pub on a recent visit to the IOW and thought it was excellent. Located in the Arreton Barns craft complex it has a large patio and ample indoor seating. Good atmosphere and ideal for famillies. They had two ciders and six ales on tap for which opted for the Sussex Brewery tipple. Tried the Hobblers Pie (6.95) which was tasty and served quickly even though it was a Saturday evening. Staff were friendly and would recommend a visit if you are on the island.

10 Jul 2006 20:54

The Hereford Arms, South Kensington

Excellent pub currently draped in England flags in readiness for the World Cup. Good selection of real ales on tap and quite a large food menu too. I had the Big Ben Burger which was served quickly and is one of the biggest burgers you'll see!

19 May 2006 19:08

The Standard of England, Ash

Yes the Standard of England is very much going - I'm there most Thursday nights doing karaoke! It did though change hands last Christmas and since then there has been a new food menu, guest ales, pool table, live music evening and new digital jukebox have been introduced.

And one for the ladies there'll be an Ann Summers night there on Monday 1st May 2006!!!

18 Apr 2006 16:23

The George Abbot, Guildford

Very nice pub with good atmosphere. It's worth visiting just to try the Hogs Back Traditional English Ale (TEA) or some of the Belgium beers too. Haven't tried the food but the toilets are clean and well kept. As chain pubs go this is quite a good one.

6 Mar 2006 18:44

The Chandos, Trafalgar Square

Very nice pub that's incredibly cheap for central London. Have some good beers on tap including Samuel Smiths Ale which at 1.70 a pint is excellent value. The baked potato I had was very and the staff friendly. Toilets are clean and well kept though this pub does get very busy in the evening so the likelihood of getting somewhere to sit is slim.

Will definately re-visit sometime soon...

6 Mar 2006 18:40

The Queen Victoria, Aldershot

Not a bad pub but good by Aldershot standards! Had IPA on tap which at 2 a pint is fairly good value. Toilets are clean and the staff friendly. Have DJs Saturday nights and also have karaoke competitions too.

16 Jan 2006 18:49

O'Neills, Soho

Quite a nice pub if you have a group of friends with you. The night we were in there the heating packed up so it was a tad chilly sitting there! Usual beers on tap like Guiness and Caffreys but I had Amstel which was 2.65 a pint. Toilets were clean and well kept and the chicken and mushroom pie I had was ok for which I had to wait about 15 minutes for. Not the best pub in the area but you could do worse too.

6 Jan 2006 13:26

The Fighting Cocks, St Albans

If you like to combine pubs with history you'll love this place. Very old building with a traditional feel. Nice beers on tap including Black Sheep which is a good sipping beer. This is the only place I've ever been where they still serve beer in the old style glass tankards.

14 Nov 2005 16:41

The Lord Moon Of The Mall, Whitehall

Quite a nice 'Spoons pub but I think once you've been to one you've near enough been to them all. Toilets are clean and well kept but you're hard pushed getting a table as it gets very busy in the evening.

8 Nov 2005 13:35

The Hogshead, Leicester Square

Can get quite loud there on a Saturday night when there's a DJ there and live football. It was good to have Bombardier at 1 a pint but would prefer to go there during the daytime.

8 Nov 2005 13:30

Mr Bumble, Blackwater

Quite a lively pub with pool tables, juke box and large TV. Toilets are clean and well kept and there is a food menu too which I've yet to try. Many of the usual beers and lagers on tap like London Pride, Budweiser, Kronenberg and IPA. Hope to be back there again soon!

24 Oct 2005 20:07

Rodboro Buildings, Guildford

An absolutely huge pub and it's easy to see why it's such a big draw. Friday and Saturday nights are just a sea of people though if you're reasonably patient getting served isn't too much of a problem.

17 May 2005 21:18

The Pit and Pendulum, Nottingham

As chain pubs go this is a very good one. OK it maybe a gothic disneyland but you can have a fun night out here. As you can imagine there were a few of the clientel that were wearing Anarchy and Marylin Manson t-shirts but don't let that put you off. The food is very nice though the main downside is they only have John Smiths as the only bitter on offer. One of the previous postings said about finding the toilets. Well you have to push the bookcase open downstairs to get to them!

The Shakespeare's Head, Holborn

I agree with most of the previous postings that this is one of the better 'Spoons and considering they don't have music there there's still quite a lively atmosphere. Well done to Wetherspoons for bringing cheap beer to the masses!

Yates's, Aldershot

Because some of the pubs in Aldershot are a bit dubious at the best of times it's best to stick to one of the chain pubs so Yates in Aldershot next to the Arcade shopping area is your best bet. The interior is nicely furnished in a modern contempory style as you'd expect from all these places and the toilets are well kept. They have discos most Friday and Saturday nights so therefore are full of people who are going out clubbing etc later on. I think once you've been to one Yates you've near enough been to them all but considering this is about the best for Aldershot town centre it say much for everywhere else in the vacinity!

The Hole In The Wall, Waterloo

Nice little pub with good beers on tap. Didn't have any food but looks quite a good menu there for your typical pub grub. Toilets are a bit primative are the only downside. Located underneath railway arches out side Waterloo. How many pubs can say they get trains thundering over them???

The Cyder House Inn, Shackleford

A proper country pub with good food and beer. Don't go there though if you're looking for a lively atmosphere being a rural area.

The Prince Regent, South Kensington

As theme pubs go it's not bad and the spooky music in the toilets is quite funny too. The food is ok and the staff friendly but they only have John Smiths as the only bitter on tap. Would be good to go there on Hallow'een!

The Quays, Mytchett

I agree with the the last two comments that it's full of Chavs. This used to be the 'in' place to go in this neck of the woods but has gone down hill a hell of a lot and the food is poor quality. The only thing it's got going for it is it's lakeside location which is nice during the summer and they do have some late night entertainment but apart from that you'd be better off trying somewhere else.

The Withies Inn, Compton

Traditional rural English country pub with open log fire during the winter and a nice beer garden during the summer. Excellent but pricey food and good beers on tap like Hogs Back and Sussex breweries. They also do their own homemade crisps!

The Saracens Head Inn, Symonds Yat East

Great 16th Century pub next to the River Wye. The food is excellent and a wide choice of real ales including Theakstons Old Peculiar. The is outside seating which is great during the summer and a cable ferry (operated by the bar staff) links the pub with other side of the river. If you are canoeing a long way the owners will allow you to put the canoes in his yard if you are staying overnight there. I've had some great evenings there and hope to be there again soon at some time!

The Ham and Blackbird, Farnborough

I have to agree with the last comment. The food can either be good or not so good. The Ham & Bigbird is a nicely decorated and there is some good beers on tap though.

The Goose, Aldershot

I had a bad experience here too. Food nothing special and it's either full of squaddies or chavs.

14 Mar 2005 21:54

The Swan, Ash Vale

A very popular pub that can sometimes get a bit too crowded so it can be a challenge finding a spare table. Food is quite good and the service is too. Large beer garden next to the canal but watch out for all the mosquitos during the summer.

The Greyhound, Ash

Nice family pub with good reasonabley priced food as well. Does get busy on Sunday lunchtimes so it's best to get there quite early.

14 Mar 2005 20:47

The Tradesmans Arms, Cove

I'm afraid to say this place is a bit of a dump. It's ok if you're a chav but if not it's one to avoid:-(

14 Mar 2005 20:38

The Duke of Normandy, Normandy

Nice cosy pub with friendly staff and atmosphere. Good beers on tap and quite a good food menu too. Can seem a bit too quiet there so maybe a TV or jukebox is needed to live things up a bit???

14 Mar 2005 20:30

The Old Courthouse, Cove

I've been here a few times with friends as it has nice relaxed atmosphere which is just what you want to enjoy your beer. Had a good New Years party there and it's good to see they have Hogs Back Brewery Traditional English Ale(TEA) on tap. I can't comment on any food they have there 'cos I've never had any myself but it would also be great to some more entertainment there like karaoke, quiz nights etc...

The Standard of England, Ash

This happens to be my local where I've spent many a p#$$#d night there! It's very much a geezers pub but there's quite afriendly atmosphere. Facillities include beer garden, juke box, a reasonabley sized function room and a big screen for sporting events. I think it could do with a like of paint inside (lol!)and it would be great if we had more entertainment like karaoke, live music etc. All in all though a good community pub.
