The George, London Bridge

Nice looking place that gets overcrowded and the barstaff can't cope or prioritise who to serve next.

Also the most expensive pub I've ever been to. I ordered a pint of Peroni and half of Guinness (for the lady!) and the barmaid said "Six pounds something" I said "Sorry it was half of Guinness" and she said "I know, Peroni is 4.20 a pint". Speechless.

The Pembury Tavern, Hackney

Rather an odd pub. For starters it looks shut from the outside, and when you get inside it's the wrong shape, which sounds ridiculous until you see it for yourself. There's more atmosphere in a library, the ceiling's too high and did I mention it's the wrong shape? They have a large selection of unusual beers which is fine unless you like lager, of which there is one. Rather an odd pub.

The Biddle Bros, Lower Clapton

Mediocre little bar, a bit pretentious and a bit seedy, but not in a good way.

The Ten Bells, Shoreditch

Absolute khasi. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to this pub.

Cave Austin, Blackheath

Friendly staff, decent wine, nice little garden out the back, perfect for a drunk Saturday afternoon, never been at night so can't comment but have heard Woolwich lowlifes frequent it which if true is a shame as it's got potential.

The Railway, Blackheath

"I think the big problem is that they sell everything a middle class woman might want, so there are too many choices and many of them involve the staff in complicated work in a bar area that is not that easy to work in" bradwan

That's the most accurate comment ever posted on BITE. I live near this pub and you can wait 10 minutes while the two girls in front decide what to have, wait for it and then pay by card. By this time four other people are at the bar and the barman hasn't got a danny who's turn next.

The Rack and Tenter, Moorgate

Half decent boozer with eye candy behind the bar and quite friendly with it. Downside is it's packed to the rafters with one pint wonders on Friday evenings, especially since the St Pauls Tavern and Kings Head closed, so best avoided then.

The Enterprise, Chalk Farm

Great pub, my joint-favourite in Camden (the Dublin Castle is the other, in case you're interested) No trouble from locals, in fact one even offered to help out if the bloke chatting up my daughter didn't leave her alone.

The Horniman at Hays, Southwark

Whoever said the service here was slow dramatically underestimated the situation. Went on a quietish Tuesday night and the wait was so long that strangers were teaming up with each other at the bar so that whoever got served first would get the round for everyone. This is great for social networking but no way to run a pub, however what does the landlord care? With the location there'll always be enough gullible tourists to keep the tills ticking over. Shame as it could be a great pub.

The Angelic, Islington

Popped in on impulse only to regret it ten minutes later after an unpleasant exchange with the special needs candidate posing as the manager. Listen mate, if you don't like running a pub and if being polite to customers falls outside your skill set, you know what to do. Took our drinks outside to run the gauntlet of Islington stereotypes, red-faced alkys, wannabee gangsta rappers and yummy mummies with 400 pushchairs. Islington never fails to turn me into a homicidal maniac, and people actually choose to live here. Unbelievable.

The Kings Head, Barbican

There's absolutely nothing to recommend here, and while its always sad when a pub closes this one won't be missed.

The Dog and Duck, Soho

Nice of the landlord to wait until we'd had a full afternoon session, pouring money in his till, before sending his rottweiler barmaid outside to tell my friends and I that we were being too noisy. Sort the toilets out, sack the rottweiler and let drinkers enjoy themselves, for crying out loud it was ten past five in the afternoon, we were hardly keeping people awake.

The Boogaloo, Highgate

Great bar, great customers and the manager's a gentleman. As for you 'Lookmother', I'd have moved you a fourth time, out the door.

The Island Queen, Islington

The decor etc in this pub's ok but I won't be back. Halfway through serving me the phone rang and the barmaid said "Back in a minute" and went and answered it.
