Royal Oak Appleby, Appleby-in-Westmorland

A very pleasant, rambling old pub, a few minutes walk from beautiful downtown Appleby. Food is good, if a bit overpriced (but then, there is a restaurant attached). Also several letting rooms - very comfortable, at least when I stayed. Well worth checking out.

The George, London Bridge

Seriously historic pub, obviously, and worth visiting just for the half-timbered interiors. A good range of beers, and plenty of bustle. The only problem with the pub is that the bar space is very small for the size of the crawd the pub attracts, so getting served can be a bit of a challenge (though the bar staff are very good).

The Queens Head, Rye

Since the reviews above, the pub has changed hands, and is now being run (as of May 2010) by a group of real ale enthusiasts, with four changing and a cider on handpump, good food, and plenty of live music. The crowd is evolving as a result, and it's now a really nice place to be. Definitely recommend a visit if you're in the area.
