Bradleys, Fitzrovia

cue the cavalcade of spanish girls, exit stage left for the bar Nazi. Still a good bar, despite the busybody glass collector/traffic marshall who herds customers from the road and tells them where they can stand. the man is a pest, par excellance.

The Grenadier, Belgravia

Brilliant location,I feel sorry for the tourists that get suckered into visiting this place. this rates as one of the shoddiest run pubs in London. If this was run by a dedicated landlord I'm sure this would be a place that you would look forward to visiting time and time again, this place has had no care, pride or attention lavished on it for many a year, just a cash cow for the owner, not that their is anything wrong with making oodles of money, just do it with some aplomb and finese.

25 Jun 2008 22:02

The Northumberland Arms, Fitzrovia

the late licence is this pubs USP. Not the best of best but definetly not the worst, alright for a late un.

2 Jun 2008 19:40

The Court, Tottenham Court Road

student type hangout.

2 Jun 2008 19:37

The Rising Sun, Tottenham Court Road

characterless, beer barn nothing to recommend this place, not one redeeming feature.

2 Jun 2008 19:35

Market Tavern, Mayfair

Nice bar, Fruli on tap. only downside no table and chairs outside, so can be uncomfortable if you are a smoker, apparently the council objected to having tables and chairs outside. European cafe culture, *I dont think so.

Bradleys, Fitzrovia

Nice bar, this bar has bags of atmosphere which attracts a nice clientele. not sure about the roving bar nazi, all it appeared that his job was,: telling people where they couldn't stand. That being the only downside to this place, a good place to meet interesting people.

2 Jun 2008 19:25

The Shepherds Tavern, Mayfair

Why dosen't Boris Johnson open a dueling field on Hyde Park, so all the disgruntled customers who have suffered rude and indifferent service, (from all pubs and bars) be allowed to challenge said individuels to a duel. Indeed this is a shocker of a pub it is a pisshole par excellence.
Great location, grotty decor, plastic drinks and disinterested bar staff, it's little wonder that the pub trade is dying a slow and undignified death.

The Flying Scotsman, Caledonian Road

Shake your moneymaker baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaby,
When The Regent wants to take a walk on the wild side, this is the place I come to with my fellow lieg men. If you come here for the beer, you are sadly deluded, brother. Good old fashioned striptease, none of that Americanised pole/lap dancing which is about as erotic as the thought of Hilda Ogden decked out in Agent Provactuer lingerie, not a nice thought. The Flying Scotsman says want it does on the tin, keep up the good work. 5/10 for the pub 10/10 for the jack the rippers (strippers)

10 May 2008 17:27

The Doric Arch, Euston

A ok place to kill an hour if you are waiting for a train, only problem as I have mentioned before it positevely stinks of farts and BO. Please repeal the smoking ban

10 May 2008 17:16

The Angel, Angel, Islington

This place could be 'The Jockey' if channel 4 ever decided to make a Londoncentric version of Shameless, I'm sure the casting agents wouldn't have too much trouble finding extras for the shoot, look no further then the clientele. Horrid place and even stinks when you walk past.

10 May 2008 17:11

The Volunteer, Baker Street

This is a nice bar with a good selection of lagers and beers from all quarters and what with the renaissannce in cider, this drink is realy well represented behind the rather then just sticking to the usual suspects the have some quite obscure marques, well worth checking out if you have the time, as the amount of choice can be a little bewieldering

10 May 2008 16:41

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Calm down ladies, it's only a pub dont get your camiknickers in a twist. The simple answer is: if you dont like the place stay away. For myself, this isn't my type of place, however I can see the charm and allure the Wenlock holds for it's many supporters.
I would rate this pub 10/10 for it's determination to not follow the pack and it's attention to detail to the product that it sells and it's unfashionable ethos in the these homogenous and tasteless and characterless days, Keep up the good work. But please remember Lady (I have been there) and gents it's only a pub calm yourself take a drink and stick on some Crosby Stills, Nash and Young.

10 May 2008 16:33

The Garden Gate, Hampstead Heath

Nice pub at selected times of the day, beware once twilight decends the chavs creep out of the woodwork and reclaim the night, too many greasy Caesar haircuts and sovereign smoking going on for my tastes. Nice until early evening, good selection behind the bar and the food is passable, it's a pub after all.

10 May 2008 16:23

The Roebuck, Hampstead

Nice pub in a realy tweedy part of town, non of those Hampstead RussellBrandalikes or psuedo poets frequent this establishment, thank the lord. good selection of international and continental beers. Pleasant patio area. Well worth a return visit.

10 May 2008 16:17

Market Tavern, Mayfair

Much better from it's previous incarnation as the faux Irish establishment O'Neill's. Mayfair was crying out for a bar like this the decor is retro 1970's but feels and looks right. A good selection of continental lagers, some real ales(not my scene) good wine list and extensive range of spirits. As for the bar staff no complaints there very friendley and professional. clean and tidy establishment, couldnt imagine the hopheads liking this place too upmarket for them. A good place to have a drink before watching a film at the Curzon. I have to conclude that this is the best establishment in the area, apart from Windows the bar on the top floor of the Hilton.

5 Apr 2008 17:52

The Royal George, Euston

Not such a bad place, handy for Euston station. Nothing special, but fit for purpose.

9 Feb 2008 23:32

The Doric Arch, Euston

Good pub, nice atmosphere shame about the toilets what with having to use a keypad to gain entry.
What with all those hopheads drinking their pints of real ale there was a lot of wind being broken, If I had struck my lighter I seriousley believe that the whole pub would have gone up. Please bring back smoking in enclosed places.

9 Feb 2008 23:28

The Garden Gate, Hampstead Heath

Nice pub with a good range of continental beers, comfortable location. the only trouble with this pub and this go's for all pubs since the introduction of the draconian smoking ban, that their was a heavy aroma of BO and farts lingering in the air thus forcing me to drink outside in the garden area. which is not the best solution. Then again with the smoking ban in place it realy brings home what disgusting people frequent these places, please repeal the smoking ban.

9 Feb 2008 23:18

Ye Grapes, Mayfair

dark, dismal and dirty dosen't desearve to be located in Mayfair.

9 Feb 2008 23:10

The Coach and Horses, Soho

I still dont know why people still rate this pub, on of the least charming establishments in all of Soho.

9 Feb 2008 23:00

The Angel, Angel, Islington

This pub is like the William Hogarth print Gin lane, brought to life in the 21st centuary. Avoid at all costs.

9 Feb 2008 22:56

The Sir Alexander Fleming, Paddington

Slightly characterless room with a standard array of drinks on offer, however a very friendly staff and clientele and large screen TV's make up for these short comings. You wouldn't go out of you way to visit but if you are in this locale it is nice and close to the wonderful middle eastern eateries of the Edgware Road.

6 Jan 2008 15:13

Windsor Castle, Marylebone

The regulars do tend to take umbrage when a casual visitor waltzes in, they think that they are in a exclusive theatrical drinking club and the gates have been breached by the barbarians. just mention some luvvie names every so often and the ice will melt and no one will take any notice of you. As said before a nice pub in a nice part of town and their is the added bonus of a log fire, for those extended winter sessions.

6 Jan 2008 15:04

The Duke of Hamilton, Hampstead

A very nice pub great range of drinks and very friendly atmosphere. When I was there with the lady Doweger their was a office party going on which enlivened the place and their was a sing song happening which was good fun.Definetly worth a return visit.

24 Dec 2007 14:42

The Duke Of Wellington, Marylebone

I walked past The Duke a couple of days ago and the pub was in the process of being refurbished. I dont know for certain but somebody told me that the owner has sold up and gone into retirment taking his collection of Napolionic objets d'art with him apprentley the pub will reopen sometime in October in a new guise as a gastropub.

1 Oct 2007 19:37

The Blue Posts, Soho

"Where's my money Budgie ?" The two reasons that i'm am here is that i'm collecting my forty nicker from Budgie and in the locale they is a decent lingerie shop round in Berwick Street, As I like to see Mrs Endell looking like Betty Page. Get Budgie a drink and Laughing Span Fritter while your at it, go check out that record store, the one that still sells vinyl and get me some Matt Monroe Tunes. even when your hunting down a reprobate like Budgie, a man must stop for a drink and this place is as good as it get's in old Soho. I bought wee Budgie a drink and he gave me me my forty nicker. For a taste of 1970's Soho visit the Blue Posts.

30 Sep 2007 05:22

The Castle, Angel, Islington

The roof garden is this place's only redeeming feature. I've never been one comment about prices but I must remark that this place is very expensive in relation to what it offers. The Castle is ok'ish for a meeting point but the thought of an extended stay would be very appealing. For such a so called chic area the truth is that Islington is not all it is cracked up to be. Upper Street if looked with an unbiased eye is quite provincial, nay may I say an ideal location for a Booze Britain camera crew to set up shop. The south Islington area on a weekend is fast mutating into a Covent Garden. However their are still some good pubs and bars if you take the time to look for them The Castle and others like this are great examples of wasted potential.

16 Sep 2007 13:55

The Roadhouse, Covent Garden

this typifies evevything bad and odius about the 1980's I never knew these places still thrived. This beer barn is the bastard child of The Punch and Judy (pub in Covent garden, V popular in 80's) and the club 18to30 ethos. To quote Marlon Brando in Apocolypse Now "The horror, the horror".

15 Sep 2007 01:12

The Strutton Arms, Westminster

This pubs Goon show heritage has undergone a bout of Starlinist revisionism, all trace of Sellers, Secombe, Bentine and Milligan had been erased what took it's place is a very bland and tired looking pub,and very dark the only light source seemed to be coming from the fruit machine. We had one drink and left not the sort of place you would go out of your way to go to.

9 Sep 2007 14:12

The Golden Eagle, Bond Street

I have tried this place again, still not sure about it, it just dosent feel right their is something really fake about this place, it reminds me of the film Westworld with it anomotronic characters. It just feels that when you open the door to the Eagle, the place springs into action and when you leave and close the door the exhibits deactivate. I dont expect this place to be an identakit pub, but it just felt a little contrived, pubs in their golden age were never this tatty. I dont think it's just me who got this vibe from the Golden Eagle, when I and my partner were their the amount of people who poked their head round the door or walked in and walked out again was quite significent. If heritage is your thing i'm sure this place would be right up your strasse.

9 Sep 2007 09:19

French House, Soho

I have been using the French on and off for about 22 years, this has to be one of the better establishments in Soho. On the drinks front the emphasis is on wine rather then beer, their is a supberb wine list and they serve Breton cider, which is always nice. The clientle are from the arty spectrum of life, so givin you a very interesting array of people. The people are very friendly and their is always a high proportion of good/interesting looking women. I have meet some very interesting people over the years. The bar staff seem to stay in the job for a long time, so when you go in their is an air of familiarity, which is a nice touch in these homogonised days. My only complaint about the French is that it closes too early, it could do with a apres midnight licence, not that I want to get juiced into the wee small hours, but on the assumption that you have been to the theatre and it has turned out at 2245, you might want a civilised hour post show drink. Apart from that no problems.

9 Sep 2007 09:02

The Coach and Horses, Mayfair

nice pub in a nice part of town, nice afternoon type of pub, it gets very busy in the evenings, good selection of wines and spirits, standard selection of beer, not much interest for the hopheads. nice friendly bar staff, a good place to take stock after flexing the plastic muscle in the emporiums of Bond Street.

8 Sep 2007 23:18

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

On the advice of one of the BITE correspondts, I decided to give this pub a second go, I admit that i'm more of a bar person then a pubman I have to say that it is not my scene, however I can wholeheartedly see why this place attracts such a loyal following, the selection of beers and ales has to be one of the biggest on offer and the staff are clued up about their wares, always a good sign. On my last posting regarding the Wenlock, I seemed to have over reacted to the ambience of this place, I concur that it is not scary and as Chick said their is a real mix of folk, and as Robert Palmer once sang 'It takes every kind of people' looking at this place with a more positve attitude I would have to say that this place deserves it's high ranking status, Im sure pubs like the Wenlock are a dying breed and this place needs to be cherished for what it is. Next time I have visitors over from the States I will certainly treat them to a afternoon at The Wenlock.

8 Sep 2007 22:26

The One Tun, Farringdon

This is a nice bar, and surprisingly for this area it dosen't get too busy, the decor is contrived shabby chic, it works quite well. The drink list is quite standard fare and the staff are friendly and on the ball. A previous correspondent stated that this has a scary feel to it, the locals that I saw in here seemed a nice bunch of regular guys and gals, in fact their were quite a lot of ladies in here which sort of cancels out the scary claim, all male environment=scary. When me and my hombres and chicas were here we all had a great time. Not too sure about the mens loos, reminded me of a mexican beach bar.

8 Sep 2007 22:09

The Duke of York, Clerkenwell

Not bad this is more of a bar then a straight up pub, back in the 90's im sure the YG had a micro brewery attached to it, however that was in the past. As a bar it's so so but it's functional and inoffensive, nice place for apres work drinkums, so the clientle tend to be office workers from the local environs. I have noticed on a lot of BITE postings that their seems to be a strong odium towards the suit wearing after work crowd, why is that? I have always found the service at this bar pleasant and efficient and the clientele are nice and relaxed

8 Sep 2007 21:56

The Crown Tavern, Clerkenwell

Great place for apres work drinkums, the clientele are a nice young and attractive bunch and very friendly, the barstaff are very friendly and helpful. I had no problem being served even though they was somewhat of a scrum at the bar, the bar staff seemed very quick and efficent. Good selection of International Beers, some real ale for the hopheads, but quite a limited selection so I dont think they would make this place their own.

8 Sep 2007 10:21

Metropolitan Bar, Baker Street

functional pit stop. Serves it's purpose, I mean it's a Weatherspoons need one say anymore

7 Sep 2007 17:25

Quinn's, Camden

Dosen't Mr Quinn know that it's a customer led marketplace these days. I have never seen somebody show such utter contempt for his customers. I wish not to be friends with this person but when me or my fellow hombres walk into this souless beer barn I wish to be treated with a degree of civility. The only reason anyone would possible want to drink in this establishment is it's unriveled selection of international brews. Mr Quinn should realise that his market place is not 1970's London, where there was little or no choice in the world of ales, and one could afford to be rude to your clientele wake up it's the 21st centuary, I'm not asking or wishing for a chain pub experience but I resent parting with my hard earned to be insulted by a tavern keeper, that's amusing in Moe's bar in Springfield but not in London in 2007

5 Sep 2007 19:11

The Tyburn, Marble Arch

for a Wetherspoon's this is surprisingly good, very handy for the cinema. Handy meeting point, good selection of bottled beers and half decent wine list, the only trouble is this place can get rammed, so dont hold your breath waiting for a table

3 Sep 2007 21:45

The O'Conor Don, Bond Street

Very good pub, reminds me of a bar I visited about 20 years ago in Dublin, very good bar staff, nice clientele and the Guiness is very well kept.

27 Aug 2007 19:04

Windsor Castle, Marylebone

nice pub, aimed at tourists on the heritage trail, nothing wrong in that, quite cosy in the winter, the barman pulls a good pint of Guinness and serves it in a dimple glass, a nice touch. A good pub to visit on an occassional basis.

27 Aug 2007 13:41

O'Neills, Soho

this used to be the WAG club, a place where I spent my dancing days back in the 80's. As O'Neills go's this is not such a bad place it was good to go upstairs and look out to Gerrard Street. The barstaff are friendly and attentive and the venue is clean and tidy.

27 Aug 2007 13:29

The Cross Keys, Covent Garden

nice little pub, the only trouble is if you sit outside you run the risk of getting accousted by junkies panhanderling for money and cigarettes, which is a nuisence. Their is some interesting pop memorbilia on the walls

30 Jul 2007 22:05

The Shepherds Tavern, Mayfair

surly bar staff, bad pub in a good location. shame

30 Jul 2007 21:43

The Red Lion, Mayfair

Nice Mayfair pub, good atmosphere, nice staff and clientele.

30 Jul 2007 21:38

Tommy Flynn's, Camden

Nutters Central, A real horrible place probably the worst pub in london.

30 Jul 2007 18:18

The Golden Eagle, Bond Street

This is a creepy looking pub, it has the air of it being a living museum exhibit, i almost thought this was a set from little Britain. I've never seen so many misfits under one roof, this place has an eerie air of unreality about it, It left me feeling quite depressed it was lucky I wasn't their when the pianist was playing, that would have freaked me out.

30 Jul 2007 18:07

The Wilton Arms, Belgravia

bad pub in a good part of London

30 Jul 2007 17:49

The Nags Head, Belgravia

strange little boozer, ok for a one off visit not the sort of place I make as a local, moody eastern european bar staff and some of the strangest music i've heard in a long time : Ronnie Hilton's greatest hits, who was a singer from the 50's. I'm sure that people warm to the quirkey design of this pub but it dosent do it for me.

30 Jul 2007 17:45

The Grenadier, Belgravia

Little gem of a pub, in a woderfully classy area, no plebs or chavs to depress you. popular with tourists who on the whole are quite friendly.

30 Jul 2007 17:38

O'Neills, Angel, Islington

pseudo Irish bar, need I say more.

30 Jul 2007 17:27

The Glass Works, Angel, Islington

chav central, avoid.

30 Jul 2007 17:24

The Angel, Angel, Islington

A haven for the underclass, very depressing venue, this place reeks of failure and misery, Weatherspoon's seem to attract that sort of clientele, probably a combination of cheap prices and early opening times. I have only used this pub as a meeting place as it's location by the tube is handy even for a person with a poor sense of direction, once you have met your guest exit statge left, rapido, not the sort of venue you would linger in.

30 Jul 2007 17:10

The Kings Head, Marylebone

that horrible old Canadian facist Hughie Green used to drink their, a good argument for non attendence, even though he has been dead for a number of years, his insincere smile beams down at you, courtesy of a signed photograph handing from the wall, not such a bad pub a little bit cliqeie, the locals think they are in a private drinking club, and look at non regulars with a note of disdain, however it wins points due to it's location.

30 Jul 2007 16:58

The Apollo, Marylebone

they should rename this pub the Moon, as it shares a common characteristic with it:it has no atmosphere.

30 Jul 2007 16:49

The Village, Soho

dreary, charmless real lowest common denominator gay bar, cheap and nasty music, lazy staff, toilet attendents who hassle you for a tip every time you use the facilities, the bar room in the brewer street is ok I have been to better venues

30 Jul 2007 15:00

The Jazz After Dark, Soho

nice late night venue, bit of a rip off with the entry fee, but then again it keeps out the riff raff, nice selection of wine, good atmosphere half decent live band

30 Jul 2007 14:51

Comptons Of Soho, Soho

I thought I was transported to a national front disco, i have never seen so many skinheads in all my life. This place is a real charm free zone

30 Jul 2007 14:48

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

the creepiest pub I have ever attended, the clientele scare the life out of me, this is a real depressing experience this is the pub where the marginlised of society drink a misfits paradise.

30 Jul 2007 14:36

The Rose and Crown, Mayfair

Nice pub, the black American guy who runs the bar is a real nice fella a real pro, the man takes pride in his work and his pub is a pleasure to visit.

30 Jul 2007 14:29

Ye Grapes, Mayfair

Overrated, this place is a dump par excellence, a real charm free zone

30 Jul 2007 14:22

The Only Running Footman, Mayfair

stupid name, I think it speaks volumes no need for a detailed review

30 Jul 2007 14:18

The Guinea, Mayfair

overrated, overpriced, so-so meat pies, misrable staff.

30 Jul 2007 14:16

The Audley, Mayfair

Allright if your a tourist, drank in worse places.

30 Jul 2007 14:13

The Old China Hand, Clerkenwell

Nice bar, very friendly staff, red stripe on tap cheap bar prices, nice place to spend a Sunday afternoon.

30 Jul 2007 14:06

French House, Soho

psudes corner

30 Jul 2007 13:56

The Duke Of Wellington, Marylebone

good pub, nice and friendley, on the downside the place could benefit from a deep clean then it would be a perfect 10

30 Jul 2007 13:54

Clockwork, Islington

charm free zone

30 Jul 2007 13:42

Clockwork, Islington

this used to be a realy good bar, nice clientele, great music, friendly staff, what happened ? It has become the opposite of it's once promising self, some may say that it's still a good venue for a late drink, I beg to differ, your better off at home with a good bottle of claret and some chilled sounds playing in the background at least at home you dont have to put up with surly bar staff

14 Dec 2006 21:33

The Duke Of Wellington, Marylebone

one of the nicest pubs one could wish to visit, lovely atmosphere, the man who owns the pub makes you feel very welcome, even if it's your first visit here, there is a sense of belonging, i visit as often as i can, sometimes my visits are spaced apart by many months, but the owner greets you like a regular and has the knack of knowing what your drink is, that's a man who enjoys what he does, which is most refreshing in these days of the chracterless chain pub. What first attracted me to The Duke was the window display of Waterloo memorabilia, which prompted me to check out the pub proper and i was amazed by the wealth of items pertaining to Wellington and Napoleon, how often have you been to a pub where the interior bears little or no resembelence to it's given name? Every visit i see something that new on me. The regulars are a nice crowd too. Top marks, keep up the good work

2 Sep 2005 00:29

Clockwork, Islington

nice bar on the Pentonville Road, recently opened, good selection of drinks, great music, Las Vegas lounge, hip hop, classic soul super friendly bar staff, good bar snacks, table football and classic films playing in the background. Large bar but still has an intimate feel to it, i get the impression that this is a pre club venue, by the clientel but it has an all inclusive vibe about it and i couldn't imagin anyone feeling out of place here providing you come with a nice and chilled attitude. Well worth checking out.

2 Sep 2005 00:11

The Castle, Angel, Islington

a real horrible place to drink, this bar is dirty, overpriced, understocked, badly run and has to have the most unenthauastic bar staff in town. When this pub opened in it's present incarnation it was quite a plesent place for a sunday afternoon drink, read the papers, chat with the regulars (it still had a neighbourhood bar feel to it) and listen to some good and diverse music everything from reggae, blues and soul to classic rock and roll and blues but that has all disappeared and has now blanded out. I visited a few days ago to meet a couple of friends, one who likes a drop of bitter,"im sorry the bitter is off" not a good sign, the staff probably couldn't be bothered to change the barrel and i observed the look of misery on a tourists face when at quite an early hour he asked for the bar menu only to get the responce of "the kitchen closed 10 minutes ago" The only thing going for this establishment is:it's central location. If you or your party know the area well seek out some of the other bars and pubs. this place is dire even when this place was The Pint Pot it had a modicum of charm and that is realy saying something. This place is ok if you like listening to David Gray, Damien Rice,Norah Jones et al on a loop!

1 Sep 2005 23:53

The Coach and Horses, Soho

For such a smart and vibrant part of the city this pub has to be one of the more grotty establisments i have stepped my elegently shod feet in, this is a real khazi, as you walk in, the bar smells as in has been doused in bleach, the badly kept beers have a whiff of disinfectant about them the decor is of that gloomy 1970's school not that the charming style of The Blue posts but that of a owner who's too mean to make this establishment welcoming. I have tried to give this pub a chance over the period of 20 years but i have yet to find a single redeeming feature to recommend this place avoid at all costs

1 Sep 2005 19:09

French House, Soho

Another Soho gem, more of an afternoon sort of pub, bit too gloomey and depressing in the evening when the drink has started to take it's toll on the clientele, who can get a bit mauldlin to say the least. try the excellent French ciders on offer and the varied aray of wines and champagnes.
During the day you can be as insuler as you want hiding in the corner with the papers or as gregarious as you please theres always someone willing to engage in friendley and quite frankly amusing conversation on a varierty of themes , go there with a non judgemental attitude and you'll have a good time and want to visit whenever the opportunity arises

1 Sep 2005 18:54

The Blue Posts, Soho

One of the nicer and more welcoming pubs in soho.a very good mix of people from the local Berwick street market traders, film industry runners the odd tourist and local residents. The beer on offer is standard fare so stick to the spirits but you dont realy go here for the quality of the booze on offer, the unpretentious atmosphere is this pubs saving grace and the decor hasen't changed since the 1970's.
A venue that you could happily tipple away an afternoon.
