The Green, Willesden Green

Given that this might indeed be the only decent boozer in Willesden, us willesden-ites are at its mercy to some extent... where else to go? And believe me, I'd like an alternative - the Green does take the mickey with their prices, as the review below points out. The food, however, is usually above average - go for the wedges at 2.50 (i think) - a good filler with a few lagers, if you're strapped for cash. A meal in the restaurant is going to be more like 10-15 - gastropub prices I guess. Have eaten there many times and have had only one (very) disappointing meal - forgivable, I think.

Powers Bar, Kilburn

Used to frequent the brondes age next door - but due to some seriously loud football, we drank up moved over to this place. Limited seating (although I didnt venture into the back - may have been more there) - but a friendly place indeed, cheap enough booze, interesting (and, erm, enthusiastic) fellow drinkers, not-too-invasive live music and... no football! Will go there again. Without steve L this time (he poured beer down my back??? What the...)

The Boogaloo, Highgate

Bit small but I guess that adds to the very cosy atmoshpere. Jukebox had some great old tunes, the live act was a little loud... considering the size of the room. Fortunately something seemingly went wrong with their gear and they packed up and left. Will definitely give it another go - nice and close to the tube too.

The Rising Sun, Tottenham Court Road

Packed. With suits. On a tuesday evening. To be expected I guess, given its location. Beer ok too. Foodwise, only had a snack ... standard pub fare, not bad.

The Devonshire Arms, Camden

Having read all the "you must be a registered goth" comments about this pub, we went there with some measure of 40-something exposure angst - would our sort-of-darkish attire not be Bela Lugosi enough for the strict Kurgan-lookalike (anyone remember highlander?) we expected at the door? Would they quiz us on obscure sisterhood lyrics, see how many gothic "dave's" we could rattle off in 10 seconds (ahem, dave gahan(?), dave vanian, dave sylvian, er, ah, ... stuck! OUT with you, miserable charlatan!). Did I mention Lorna's pinkish-orange trainers/sneakers..? Clearly, we were doomed - I could feel the soil falling over my head..... buzzzzzz! Not a gothic quote! OUT again!
Well, all the worry for naught - and I even sent bright-footed lorna in first, displaying perfect gothic timidness. A lovely, friendly place where the barman drew a pentagram in lieu of a clover [a nice touch i thought] in the foam on my guiness, and upon Lorna's request(the little trouble girl!**) scrabbled around to find anything by Japan to play for us. Successfully too. So, we got drunk, smoked a few ciggies (the lipstick on my cigarette, frost upon the windowpane ... ok, I'll stop soon) and had fun - i guess, mostly, since we played along, and they were more than nice, and because we liked their music (not just our requests)... but if they'd tossed us out i would have been somewhat irritated. In summary - in transylvania, do as the neophytes do... or just go to the brondes age for a pint of fosters with yer rugby jersey on - something i do quite regularly - ok, minus the jersey. Can't stand the game.
** sonic youth, instrumental ... one of their melodic ones.

Brondes Age, Kilburn

Great pub. Spacious, friendly staff, warm decor, usually buzzing (but not bursting) with people (a few antipodeans?)having a good time. Outside area great for summer armlifting, food above average, management professional - had youngish bar person 'discourage' seriously irritating and persistent drunk bothering us at our outside table without it getting ugly. Somewhat limited choice of beer though.
