The George IV, Kentish Town

Have been coming here for 20 years and still haven't plucked up the courage to chat up the most attractive bar person in north London. You've noticed I've avoided talking about the beer and ambiance, which is strictly average. But the clientele is true Kentish Town and deserves your custom for that reason alone. Family legend holds that my Granddad attempted to 'nick' a car from outside this hostelry after leaving a wedding reception held here in the early 50's. Luckily he was too drunk to gain entry. A proud moment for us all.

The Grafton Arms, Kentish Town

it really is an excellent pub. However, it seems a shame that it needs to 'bend the knee' to the local (and not so local) boho yuppies. (is there such a cohort?) I can barely write this review due to the weight of the chip on my shoulder. Hey, the pub is thriving and is going to survive, so I'm going to stop moaning.

The Prince of Wales, Twickenham

Didn't try the food but have heard good things. As a pub it's fine. Staff are attentive and fun. Manager mixes with the clientele and handles the less sober drinkers well. A great local but not worth travelling from the Shetlands

The Rifleman, Twickenham

Visited the pub on the 16th June. Bar was was buzzing with a number of locals calling in. Young manager but in the old style. It's a local which delivers and needs supporting. Shame on you Twickenimians (is there such a term?) if you let this one die

The George IV, Kentish Town

it's a fine pub. though I no longer live in the area I have a number of family anecdotes relating to this pub that bring me back on a regular basis. Some staff have been there for years and add to the atmosphere of the place. Having said that I rarely have more than a pint here while I read my paper and reminisce.

'Round midnight Jazz & Blues Bar, Islington

Service and beer all adequate. It's the music that sets this venue apart. Good selection of blues and jazz artists which make it unique in this part of town. Well worth a visit

New Fairlop Oak, Barkingside

Ok it's Wetherspoon's but the staff are helpful and the range of beers is the best in the area. Lunchtimes tend to bring mums and kids out to play but for less than 3 you can't complain.

King George V, Ilford

Locals pub with good staff and a range of activities over the week. Always the danger of being accosted by the local pub bore but not a bad place for a couple of pints

The Unicorn, Ilford

As a local I have avoided this pub for years. With the closing of two local pubs within the last 4 months I thought I'd give it a go. Staff are very freindly and efficient. Real ale available and good standard. The food comes in good portions and is edible and the regulars are friendly. What more do you need? I wouldn't advise making a long journey to get here but if you live in the area it's worth a visit

Closed July 2010.

The County, Ilford

Another decent suburban pub bites the dust. The County had a go at being a community pub a Gastro pub and a regular boozer. What hope is there?

The Warrington Hotel, Maida Vale

No it's not cheap but if all you want is cheap beer you can go to a Whetherspoons. The choice of beers, mix of punters and stunning and well preserved interior puts the Warrington ahead of any other pub with a W9 postcode.

The Swan and Edgar, Marylebone

Oh dear. Have been coming on a regular basis for about 6 months. Was enchanted by the minimalist decor with newspaper motif. A bar designed for the well heeled and urban gentry of the area. Recently they have removed the real ale that was on sale and seemed to have pre-empted the era of austerity we are entering by reducing the food portions to levels which would make Victoria Beckham ask for more. On second thoughts perhaps the owners have decided to go with the times and have heralded the return of a Tory government by turning this place into an eighties style wine bar. Must dig out my red braces and Filofax.

The, Gants Hill

Interesting bar located near the station. They do serve real ale including London Pride. Would echo the comments about the owner and the regulars. Maybe not a place to spend an evening but definitely the best place to meet friends or have a 'livener' before moving on.

The County, Ilford

When I first came to this pub 20 years ago it was not uncommon for it to be packed three nights a week and Sunday lunchtimes. I guess those days are over, but if any pub in the area deserves to be full this is it.
The new owners(managers?) have turned this into a venue with a great community feel. The food is excellent and the chef goes out of his way to make sure you're happy. The staff, mostly young, attractive and female are helpful and just the right side of friendly. There seem to be events most evenings and the Jazz nights on Sunday are excellent. One critiscism is the beer. Although they sell a variety of beers from the local Ha'penny brewey (less than a mile away, which is worthy of praise in itself) there are times when demand exceeds supply. This is a small quibble and would not stop me giving them my custom in preference to any of their rivals in the locality.
