The Kings Arms, Oxford

Sorry should have been clearer, and I see your point: my main complaint was the pricing. The food costs pretty much the same as anywhere else, even if it's far from wonderful. I've had better, cheaper beer elsewhere in Oxford but I suppose you're paying for location as you say.

The Isis Tavern, Iffley Lock

Very decent food in a superior setting. The only thing that let this pub down when I was there was the drinks on offer. Go for lunch and enjoy the view.

The Rickety Press, Oxford

Charitable institution devoted to the promotion of meat consumption: there is a fresh meat raffle after the pub quiz and the food is almost certainly the cheapest in Oxford. In fact it's so cheap you could probably afford to taxi here and back and still feel it was good value for money. The drinks seem to subsidise this altruistic distribution of meat, but are tasty enough. Good roomy pub with great atmosphere. Worth checking out. The food is by the way tasty enough, and comes in large portions. Vegetarians, students and locals all well-catered for.

The Kings Arms, Oxford

The attraction of this bar eludes me other than its location. Far too busy, for no good reason, at night. It is however not lacking in atmosphere, but mostly it's students. Also, the Young's beers here are overpriced for the quality. It doesn't seem nearly as bad for food though, and at least during the day it's generally possible to get a seat.

5 Sep 2006 15:54

Jericho, Oxford

Vastly overpriced and morbidly painted bar. It seems to attract clientele who think it's stylish.

5 Sep 2006 15:52

The Duke Of Cambridge, Oxford

I'm told it does special offers at times, which will only make this rammed bar even more revolting. Too loud, too expensive, too dark and too rah. Easily one of the worst cocktail bars in a city full of mediocre cocktail bars. The only thing good about its location is its proximity to Raoul's, where it is actually possible to have a good cocktail.

5 Sep 2006 15:48

Three Goats Heads, Oxford

Nice building with the usual Sam Smiths drinks. Nothing special, and smaller than you think, but in a great location. Several times when I used to go regularly it had a truly great and friendly barman who remembered our drinks after one visit. Last time I went there was a surly girl who seemed to be tripping.

5 Sep 2006 15:43

The White Horse, Oxford

Reasonable pub in a great location with bad food. It's ruined by the fact that it is the size of most pubs' toilets. The decor is pretty charming, though, so it's worth a visit to check it out, and if you catch it when it's not busy it'll save you the walk to a better pub outside the city centre. The beers here are fine, and quite varied. A victim of its own success really, though I've found it to be a little friendlier than most of those nearby.

The White House, Oxford

Great food; good garden. On the whole a fine semi-gastro, and very handy for the station. Worth the walk from the town centre on a nice day, as it probably has the best beer garden in Oxford. Virtually the only beer garden in Oxford in fact, but still a good one. It's not really an ale pub, but they do serve it. Not in fact white.

5 Sep 2006 15:33

Royal Blenheim, Oxford

Reasonably late opening standard boozer, handy for a quick one while you're shopping, or a late one on the way home. Quite spacious. The beers are nothing to write home about, but generally fine. It'll never be your regular, but it's got its uses, and probably deserves to be on a crawl.

5 Sep 2006 15:28

The Rose and Crown PH, Oxford

Great beer, great landlord. I haven't had the food but I'm betting it's great. Pretty interesting building too. This indeed a real high point in Oxford drinking.

5 Sep 2006 15:22

Whitelocks, Leeds

A true old school city pub. Undoubtedly the best in Leeds, and not just for its unimaginably fortuitous location. Well-kept interior in general, but with just enough wear and tear. Good beers, but small, so you'll probably want to sit outside. Food tasty. Staff variable.

5 Sep 2006 03:35

Fanny's Ale And Cider House, Saltaire

Superb beer and range. Delightful building, good location and piano made this a top choice for when I've been in Saltaire.

5 Sep 2006 03:32

The Boathouse Inn, Saltaire

This pub has now finalised its transition to restaurant. The food and service when I went were both terrible: the wrong main course was brought out, and then corrected with something that was manifestly microwaved. Unluxurious on the inside, and a little unkempt by the river. THe beer is so-so.

5 Sep 2006 03:29

The Old Barn, Frizinghall

Hilarious mixture of besieged regulars and 6th formers. It serves these two constituencies well.

5 Sep 2006 03:19

The Park, Bradford

Pub full of TVs.

5 Sep 2006 03:17

Bar t'at, Ilkley

This is a wonderful pub. Everything you could want really.

5 Sep 2006 03:10

The Ginger Goose, Bradford

Unbelievably unpleasant bar. Bring spare pair of shoes. Location no advantage: there are no nicer bars in the immediate area.

5 Sep 2006 03:05

Sir Titus Salt, Bradford

Pretty poor, even for a Wetherspoons. Food served with all the speed of continental drift. Nice enough building ruined by terrible staff. But still better than the immediate neighbours.

5 Sep 2006 03:03

The Shoulder of Mutton, Bradford

Nice enough beer garden with old man's pub. Stunningly low prices, but it's only Sam Smith's beer. Worth incorporating into a crawl.

5 Sep 2006 03:00

The Love Apple Cafe, Bradford

This place outclasses the local opposition, such as the Wetherspoons or all the chainclubs (like Revolution). Food range good, and all very tasty. Ales limited but well-served. Staff very friendly. Good mix of interesting people go here: it's very handy for the theatre and arthouse cinema. It's shaken off its slightly Bohemian feel, but is still fun. Definitely worth a visit. Some of my best nights in Bradford have been here.

5 Sep 2006 02:56

The Fighting Cock, Bradford

Nowhere to sit: go for the drinks. Probably the best range of beers and other goodies (including ciders) in Bradford. In middle of post-apocalyptic quarter of city.

5 Sep 2006 02:52

The Corn Dolly, Bradford

Friendliest place on earth. Great building, good pool table, 4 guests at a time with quick turnover. Staff excellent. Unpretensiously charming. Only drawback is the beer garden is the car park and it can get quite hot. On balance, probably the best in the city.

5 Sep 2006 02:49

The Cock and Bottle, Bradford

Astonishingly good beer and range. One of the top two for beer in the city. A little out of the way (and up a hill), but repays a visit. Decor is unspoilt but not homely. Landlord generally friendly, staff less so. Last time we were there the radio was deafening, and playing only adverts. A hidden gem really, but not without its flaws.

5 Sep 2006 02:46

The Black Swan, Bradford

A good pool table with an alright pub attached.

5 Sep 2006 02:43

Beehive Inn, Bradford

Superb pub with lots of character, and a reasonable range of beers. One of the best the city has to offer. Pool table in its own room.

5 Sep 2006 02:42

Hobgoblin, Oxford

Good beers and honest food. Student discount, but by no means a student pub. Very friendly staff in general, and fantastic location. Possibly the town centre pub most worth a visit. Curious lack of places to sit or stand for such a large building.

5 Sep 2006 02:31

The Turl, Oxford

Wonderful building. No beer or customers.

5 Sep 2006 02:28

Rosie O'Gradys, Oxford

Hard to know what to say. It's pretty much the only pub round here, and if you sit in the comfy chairs it's not at all offensive. Irish drinks you don't get everywhere.

5 Sep 2006 02:27

The Royal Oak, Oxford

Top pub with great Continentals and pretty good bitters. Sociable opening hours mean this place gets busy, even though it's enormous. Wonderful atmosphere most of the time. We played French Cluedo here. Hard to fault, except it's just a little out of town, but definitely worth the walk. Good gateway pub for Jericho.

5 Sep 2006 02:25

The Cape of Good Hope, Oxford

Never go to a pub with bouncers. Or one that doesn't serve beer.

5 Sep 2006 02:18

The Turf Tavern, Oxford

The fact this place actually has a good range of beers served not too badly is irrelevant, since it's so packed at all times that you'll never get to taste any. Food slow and standard. Outside in use all year: ineffective braziers, where you can toast marshmellows. Only go if you're a tourist, a student or enjoy complaining.

5 Sep 2006 02:16

The Mitre, Oxford

Tourist trap serving boring food. Imagine the place you'd take your granny if you didn't like her.

5 Sep 2006 02:13

The Next Door Bar, Oxford

Not a pub: definitely a bar with restaurant, but a very good restaurant, and a pretty good Young's bar. Main attraction is the quietness as compared to the tasteless city centre pubs. Ideal for a chat on an afternoon, but it's not the kind of place memories are made.

5 Sep 2006 02:11

The Old Tom, Oxford

Refurbished controversially: non-smoking rules render this place clinical. No students in general it seems though. Food was terrible when I went, but I hear it isn't always bad.

5 Sep 2006 02:08

The Lamb and Flag, Oxford

Unusual beers, served pretty well. Nice enough decor, with a couple of more isolated rooms. Worth a visit or three since it's conveniently located.

5 Sep 2006 02:05

Jude The Obscure, Oxford

A pretty good pub but a little busy. There are a million better pubs just off Walton Street.

5 Sep 2006 02:03

The Honey Pot, Oxford

A tiny bit pricey but worth it. Easily the most interesting bar in this part of town.

5 Sep 2006 02:01

The Red Lion, Oxford

If you're looking at this website, you already know not to go here.

5 Sep 2006 02:00

The Half Moon, Oxford

Chaotic, glorious pub that doesn't close.

5 Sep 2006 01:59

The Harcourt Arms, Oxford

Undeservedly quiet pub with well-kept beers, and good landlord. Some games. A little small, but it's not usually that full. Worth a trip if you're a little bored of the other great Jericho pubs.

5 Sep 2006 01:58

The Head of the River, Oxford

Overpriced, overrated and overpopulated.

5 Sep 2006 01:56

The Fox and Hounds, Oxford

The best Sunday roast in Oxford, possibly the world, and cheap to boot. Beer is nothing special, but unimportant. The staff are friendly, some of the locals colourful. The building is quite pretty: full of stuffed fish (confusing for a pub named after hunting) with a carvery area made to look like a French rural cafe.

5 Sep 2006 01:54

Far From the Madding Crowd, Oxford

Uncomfortable bar which massacres good Northern beers.

5 Sep 2006 01:50

The Eagle and Child, Oxford

The previous post surprises me as the bar staff every time I've been were clearly overseas students with no comprehension of how to pour beer. The smoking section is cosy, the non-smoking potting shed hideous. Food alright. You can do better than this across the road, or just up it at the Royal Oak.

5 Sep 2006 01:48

The Crown Inn, Oxford

Scary unwelcoming place that drove me away with its lack of decent beer. Surprisingly easy to miss, which is recommended.

5 Sep 2006 01:44

The Chequers Inn, Oxford

More of a bar than a pub. 'Nuff said.

5 Sep 2006 01:43

The Bookbinders Ale House, Oxford

Good range of beers, well served. As for food, the menu is limited but well-prepared, generously proportioned and not too expensive. Superb for sausages. Wonderful building, with (suprisingly) books all over the place, fake door handles on the toilets and signs in Polish. Free monkey nuts from a barrel in the middle of the place and locals with dogs make this an interesting pub. Superb pub quiz, with convoluted rules and ludicrous themed rounds. A few tables outside for Summer with a great view of the Orthodox Church.

5 Sep 2006 01:41

The Brewery Gate, Oxford

Generally overpriced gay pub. Some offers on. Distracting posters. Friendly though, with interesting juke box.

5 Sep 2006 01:36

The Bear, Oxford

A pub that doesn't quite deliver on its promise. Miniscule inside, and possibly the ugliest outside area in the city, with umbrellas the only saving grace. The food is of a pretty good standard and well-priced. The beers are never as good as you hope: this has more to do with the selection than the keeping. But given the dearth of quality city centre pubs worth bearing in mind.

5 Sep 2006 01:34

The Angel and Greyhound, Oxford

Food not bad at all. Beer all Youngs but not badly kept: draw your own conclusions. Often very busy, but pretty good atmosphere, and with lots of outside space for Summer. Main attraction is board games and bar billiards, though this can make the place feel like a pub for teetotallers or toddlers at times. Rare Oxford pub darts board, and thoroughly unpredictable barman.
