Ilchester Arms, Abbotsbury

A group of 8 of us ladies visited at the weekend - a reasonably large group but not massive (and we were well behaved!). We had a very disappointing experience. Our food was brought to the table a bit at a time and there was no apology or explanation and no smiling either. First two plates of lamb were delivered (but no veg), then quite a bit of time later, two more meals were brought out (including one with fries), then later one more was brought out (but no fries that had been ordered even though these must have been cooked at the same time as the other order), meanwhile the original two people were still waiting for their veg and so on and so on. It must have taken 15-20 minutes before all the dishes were eventually served. I've never experienced anything like it. The food was excellent but because of the above we will not be returning.

The Anchor, Seatown

Visited at the weekend and pleased to find the ladies is now a pleasant place to go to now! However, prices seem to climb and climb and one of the bar staff was particularly unfriendly. The crab sandwich was served in an unappetising roll and tasted more of lemon than crab. The beer was fine but overall it wasn't the lovely experience I've had in the past. Perhaps a victim of it's own success?

The West Bay, West Bay

Stopped for a beer and a crab sandwich at the weekend. Really friendly service, good (Palmers) beer and a lovely sandwich, all at sensible prices. Can't wait to visit again!

The Three Crowns, Chippenham

Last pub we visited in Chippenham and still the best! Friendly proper pub. Real log fire. Lots of interesting beer and cider.

The Rose and Crown, Chippenham

Seemed nice both outside and inside but no real ales on offer. However, friendly barmaid pointed us in the direction of the Three Crowns.

The Bear Hotel, Chippenham

Sadly seems to be another dying pub. No real ales. Turned round and walked straight out.

The White Hart Hotel / O'Dwyer's Bar, Calne

Present owners have been there for a couple of years now. 4 real ales in good condition and good freshly cooked food. Outside is looking a bit tatty but maybe about to be repainted/plastered etc. Clean inside though large amounts of memorabilia in various corners/on the walls. Very friendly and welcoming and log fire burning in the evening. Recommend a visit!

The Crown Hotel, Alton

Visited recently with some friends. Not quite as bad as previous reviews. Food was mostly good and reasonable (avoid the omelettes though!). Two real ales on hand pumps situated behind the bar. Courage Best was fine. Service was friendly and loos were clean.

The Barley Mow, Alton

Cotley Inn, Chard

Visited for lunch recently. Two good log fires. Very welcoming. Excellent drop of Exmoor Ale and lovely home made pie and chips. Fully recommend a visit.

The Chequers, Burcot

As a group of 8 ladies staying at a holiday cottage nearby we took advantage of a pub so close and had lunch and dinner at The Chequers. We were really well looked after, the staff were charming, helpful and efficient, and the food (and beer) was excellent. It was also clean and comfortable and had a lovely log fire. Highly recommended.

The George, Dorchester on Thames

Wonderful building but we must have visited on a bad day (8.3.15). The service was appalling and surly. It took us 2 hours to have a one course lunch! We had wanted pudding but they never came to take our order. It was busy but not that busy. There was no apology for keeping us waiting nor did they check our food was ok. Am afraid we won't be going back for quite some time. Shame.

The Kings Arms Hotel, Dorchester

Stayed one night recently - very comfortable and clean with good service. One end of the bar now has comfy settees whilst the other end is set out for dining. Food was very good. Only one beer on hand pump available but it was fine. Car park at rear and in the centre of Dorchester. Would definitely stay here again.

Great beer, great food, great service, great pub!

The Star Inn, Bentley

Haven't been to the Star for years but popped in for lunch at the weekend and was very pleasantly surprised. Friendly and welcoming - roaring log fire - two good beers on hand pump and food was lovely. Will be visiting more often!

The Flying Bull, Rake

Popped in for a quick lunch with local friend. Had a bowl of very nice homemade soup and a decent pint of Brakespears. Lovely log fire and friendly, helpful service. Will visit again.

The Star, Godalming

Nice pub and great selection of real ales and ciders but we visited on a quiet Saturday afternoon and it was so cold inside. We had to keep our coats on (as did the people at the table next to us) and we only stayed for one quick drink. Shame.

Lasham Gliding Club, Alton

Club House open to the public. Really nice sitting outside on a sunny day watching all the gliding activity. Bar recently refurbed and usually has at least 2 ales on pump in good condition. Canteen next door does excellent food and the bar also has a good snack menu. A good place to stop off at on a cycle ride/long walk.

The Guy Fawkes Hotel, York

Had a lovely meal in the restaurant here last weekend. Excellent service and food beautifully cooked and presented. Gas light and candles added to the atmosphere.

The Black Swan, York

Great pub, good beer and a friendly landlord. Very atmospheric, lots of beams, nooks and crannies, etc. Well worth a visit.

The Old Farm Inn, Totternhoe

Just popped by on the way to visit friends at Leighton Buzzard. Lovely pub, friendly service and a good pint of Beach Comber beer and Hazy Daze cider. Would like to get to know the place better.

The Shipwright Arms, Helford Village

Wonderful pub with great food and beer. I gather it must have changed hands late last year/earlier this year and the new people are doing an excellent job. Lovely spot on the Helford River. The loos are now updated and spotless too!

The Golden Pot, Shalden

Popped in for quick pint as we haven't been there in ages to find that it's changed hands yet again. The interior has been smartened up and the bar moved again. We didn't eat but the couple next to us had their snack bowls - one cheesy chips with bacon (£4.75) and the other nachos with cheese and jalapenos (£3.75) - which looked really good and very generous portions. The menu also looked tempting. Perhaps could do with a couple of comfy chairs but otherwise looking good. Service was friendly and efficient and the beer good(two real ales available). Will definitely give it another visit in the near future.

The Kings Head, Alton

Agree exactly with previous comment. Good locals pub. Held an excellent beer festival over the weekend - well managed with some very interesting and pleasant beers. If only the interior could be made less stark - a few pictures would help for instance. Sylviajoan

The Rose and Crown, Greenwich

Had a very nice lunch here - fish and chips. Beer sampled was fine and service efficient and friendly. Good Victorian décor. (Whilst in this part of Greenwich worth visiting the small, quirky but interesting fan museum a couple of doors up the hill).

The Sailors Return, Weymouth

Great pub. Good beer. Good music. Very lively on a Saturday evening.

23 Jun 2013 13:41

The French Horn, Alton

Well run pub. Usually a good choice of real ales and good food. Nice log fire in winter and pleasant large garden in summer. Staff generally friendly and helpful.

12 Jun 2013 23:33

The White Hart, Holybourne

Changed hands last year and new landlords seem to be making a good job of running the place. Usually 3 real ales on offer. Food very good. Beer garden is currently being improved too.
