The Boat Inn, Cromford

Handy for the legendary Scarthins bookshop.

The beer is well kept, however there is a general grubbiness about the place and I would agree about the pervading smell of dog.Not sure I would want to eat here.

The Beltane Cafe Bar, Buxton

Unusual but consistently good little cafe/bar on the steep hill from the Crescent to the Market place.
Always a range of interesting beers on offer with reasonable lunchtime food. Now our place to stop for a quick couple after a show at the nearby Opera House.

The Packhorse Inn, Bakewell

Less than a mile from the Peak District tourist hotspot of Monsal Head, this has always been a small friendly, pokey little country pub.

Subject to a recent change of management which has been entirely for the better. The bar has been moved maximising the limited space available in what is essentially three small connected rooms. The food is well prepared and good value, with three decent ales on offer the last night I was in, including two from Thornbridge Brewery which is only a couple of fields away.

A much better option than the overpriced, packed Monsal Head Hotel and the two rather bland Robinsons' houses down the hill in Great Longstone

The Cheshire Cheese Inn, Hope

Best pub in the Hope Valley. Good beer decent grub and run by a bloke who runs a good house.Recommended

The Barley Mow, Bonsall

Popped in one quiet lunchtime, the Hartington was slightly off but no quibbles and it was changed. Simple hearty lunch and a nice atmosphere with the locals very friendly and on good terms with landlord.

Would definitely use again when next in the village.

The Red Lion Inn, Litton

An excellent, little country pub.

Four decent ales, usually with good options on offer from Bradfield and Abbeydale breweries. Honest hearty grub and a place that attracts a broad range of nice people. Always leave with a smile on my face and wish I could stop a bit longer.

Highly recommended

The Peacock, Bakewell

Sadly not the pub it was, the change in landlord has had a detrimental effect on the pub with many of the local departing.

Still a nice pub and my favourite in the town, the beer is usually ok, although not consistently good as in the past. Better than average but somehow its lost its heart.

People rarely appreciate a good landlord until they've gone.

The Red Lion Inn, Litton

Haven't been in for ages but good to see little has changed.
Late October sunday afternoon and the pub was packed with locals and their dogs,a folk session was going on in the little back room, a few tourists were studying the piles of local guidebooks and papers and everybody appeared to be enjoying the quality beer and great atmosphere. One of the best pubs oin the district.

The Old Bear, Cobham

Big pub that was virtually empty when I ventured in on a midweek evening. Food was nicely presented, cooked to order and reasonable value for this part of the world. Staff were friendly and the beer (Batemans) was good. I will be back

Dog and Gun, Keswick

An extremely good pub which appears to meet the competing demands of being a proper local and not disappointing passing local trade. Nice range of local beers, decent food, dog friendly. Nothing to dislike about this place.

The Old Clubhouse, Buxton

Handy if you are visiting the Opera House next door, during the week it's often quicker to get served here than by the geriatrics running the Theatre bar. There's a decent function room upstairs that is great for comedy nights and used extensively during the fringe.

Other than that this pub is just a little disappointing, a lovely building which has been been blandly decorated inside with not a lot to recommend it other than its location.

The Wheatsheaf on the Green, Esher

Unpretentious pub with decent beer with a good mix of customers.A nicer atmosphere than thatoffered by the laternatives in Esher. Recommended.

The Queens Arms, Bakewell

A once lovely pub, ruined by a past makeover when they knocked most of the space into one larger room. Cheap refit a couple of years ago under the current landlord is already starting to look tired. Beer is very good and well kept (take a bow Ben) and the staff on the whole are friendly. The place is let down by the clientele, it attracts most of the town's kids and the pool table (what is it about pool that attracts riff raff?).

The Barley Mow, Marylebone

Nice pub with great little snugs. Let down by an East Eurpean barmaid who clearly had little English and even less understanding of how to put a proper pint. Took exception when I asked for the pint to be topped up.

The Golden Eagle, Bond Street

To find this place so close to Oxford Street was an unexpected pleasure.

Very well kept beer, fella playing a piano with half the pub singing along. It felt as though I fallen into a time warp. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and will definitely use the next time I am in the area.

The Peacock, Bakewell

Best pub in the town. Now serving Bakewell Bitter from Peak Ales which alone is worth the visit.

Entetaining quiz on Wednesday with free sandwiches, ofter offers live music at the weekends. Great for watching rugby. Attracts all ages and classes, a proper community pub.

The Plough, Cobham

Expensive but what do you expect in Cobham?.

Beer is usually pretty reliable, the food in the L'auberge is extremely good while the pub grub in the rest of the pub is reasonable but nothing special. Parking can be hellish and some of the clientele worth shooting but if I had to live (or could afford) to live in this neck of the woods then this would definitely be my local.

The Bentley Brook Inn, Fenny Bentley

Excellent pub for all the family. There is a big lawn out front for impromptu weekend games of footie for the nippers. I love the Leatherbritches beer brewed on the premises and Mrs superowl likes the plant nursery attached to the pub.

Food is on the whole pretty decent, particularly when you go for the more simple fare e.g. excellent bangers and mash with good quality sausage is my regular choice.

The Devonshire Arms, Pilsley

Not to be confused with a pub of the same name in nearby Beeley. This place is the business. A lovely, unpretentious country boozer in one of the villages on the Chatsworth Estate.

The beer is well kept, the food is simple traditional country fare (excellent pies, great fish and chips etc.) and the Landlord is a real character. don't dare use a mobile in his pub.

Combine a visit with a look in the Charstwoth Farm Shop a 100 yards up the road.

The Devonshire Arms, Beeley

Lovely setting adjacent to the Chatsworth Estate.

Beer is reasonable but expensive for the area, the food likewise. Restaurant area gets very busy and you always get the impression that it a numbers game at this place. worth using if in the area but there are many better pubs nearby.

The Bear, Esher

Worst Young's house I have ever been used.

Clueless staff offering appalling service, expensive poorly kept beer only slightly redeemed by the fact that the food was a little better then expected.

14 Feb 2006 14:02

The Prince of Wales, Esher

More a restaurant than a proper pub these days. Vast menu with reasonable grub, expect long waits at busy times. Lots of foreign staff who haven't a clue about pouring proper ale. Quality of the beer is variable, have had a number of dodgy pints in here.Hardly worth pointing this out as the staff don't know anything about the stuff.

14 Feb 2006 13:57

Crown Posada, Newcastle

Lovely traditional Victorian boozer tucked away in the mess that the Quayside has become. Great range of interesting beers with decent customers, fortunately most of the underdressed mobs roaming around these parts don't appear to notice this gem

22 Sep 2005 13:51

The Bulls Head, Ashford in the Water

Consistently high standard of food, pub is only let down by its beer imo, Robinsons is a very poor pint in comparison with what is available elsewhere in the area.
