The Calthorpe Arms, Holborn

"Old fashioned, well-worn pub would be the cliched description"

I totally agree. This has been a favourite of mine for some time, purely for the decent beer, great food and friendly bar staff. All are still the same apart from the later. The short, blonde, scouse barmaid is quite possibly one of the RUDEST barmaids I've ever come across. No scrub that, she's one of the rudest human beings I've ever come across. I was in there a few weeks back with about 4 other people and she took all of our drink orders at the same time and wanted to charge us a total rather than us wanting to buy our own drinks. I put this down to the fact that she'd gotten out of the wrong side of the bed, had the decorators in or perhaps hadn't had any in a while. (To be honest I'd be surprised if she'd had any EVER!!!) I went in this pub again today to be greeted once more by her slapped ar5e for a face and poor attitude. Add to that the fact that there was a dead mouse upstairs laying on the carpet and I can see why no one has been in here recently.

R.I.P The Calthorpe Arms. I will miss yor nuclear lasagne so... x

The Milestone, Rochford

Cracking little boozer!

Never even knew it was there till I recently moved to the area and went there as part of a local pub crawl.

Friendly staff, jukebox, dart board, beer garden, WIN!

The Bat and Ball, Leicester Square

Totally agree with the last post.

This was a spot on boozer and one of few in the area that was cheap, friendly and ALWAYS full. Make me wonder why they close popular places like this down for the cr*ppy lounge bars and gastro sh*t holes that are cropping up everywhere.

Had many a good afternoon in there. Sadly wont be doing so again :O(

The Pembury Tavern, Hackney

NO WAY!!!
It's been a few years since I was round this area. The last time I was this place was sitting empty and in a shocking state. It had been left empty for years.

Nice to see it re-open as a pub. Judging by the reviews though I don't think I'll be visiting. Doesn't sounds like my kind of place.

The Masons Arms, Upminster

This pub is back on top form!!!

Landlord is a bloody chap!

Nice one Tony. Hope you hang around for a while and give this pub a well needed face lift. You've certainly made the place welcoming again.

Maybe we should all go down with our paint brushes and lend a hand?! BAGSY NOT THE BOGS THOUGH!!!

The Northcote, Leyton

Popped in for a few pints after the Orient game on Saturday. Nice to see another pub supporting the local team.

If we go up and the club bother with the old bus parade then I think getting mangled in here will be a priority.

The Pakenham Arms, Clerkenwell

Darts for the last 4 Friday's running.
Went in at lunch time yesterday for the first time.

Reminds me of the Apple Tree back in the good old days.

Very friendly bar staff, darts, good jukebox, sky sports on ALL THE TIME, great food. What more could you want?!

...a few attractive women to come in now and again I guess.

The Old Maypole, Ilford

Have been drinking in this pub since I moved to the area back in 98 and I've seen three versions of it.

98-01
Cracking PROPER boozer!

01-03
Went all pink and blue coloured. Didn't really like this era.

03-present
Darker colours, looks a little more like a pub again.

Always have a laugh in the Maypole even though some of the chav punters in there can get on your t*ts! Sometimes think they own the place. Landlord is a lovely bloke though and don't stand for no sh!t. It's a nice big pub with tons of room and has a good atmosphere when packed on weekends. Not sure why but it's gone a bit quiet of late.

Happy to call this my local.

The Masons Arms, Upminster

First time I visited this pub I loved it.
Second time I visited I still loved it.
Third time I visited I wondered what the hell had happened to it!

This pub has so much potential and with a refurb could go back to it's glory days that I hear about so much from my mates.

+ points
Three pool tables
Video Jukebox
Fit barmaid

- points
Chavs
Needs decorating

Bootsy Brogans, Wembley

Visited this pub pre curry last night.

It was pretty empty but it had a nice look about it. Nice big boozer, decent beer, sky sports and a pool table. Not much more you can ask for really!

Caf Kick, Exmouth Market

More of a cafe that sells beer than a bar or pub. Is a run down hole of a place, very similar to a grubby greasy spoon.

The Apple Tree, Clerkenwell

That glass table is stupidly big.
Myself and thebigman were hoping someone would trip and fall through it last week, just for a bit of lunch time pub comedy.

'Artwork' in there is pretty bad

The Lamb, Bloomsbury

Cracking homemade food!

Proper old school boozer. One of those pubs that i hope never changes. Problem is that it's in a new media gastro revamp area but i have a feeling that this is a place that will stay untouched.

The Goose, Holborn

It's okay.
Nothing special. Good food though.
Pain in the arse having the non-smoking area when you're out with people who are smoking as there's never anywhere to bloody sit to eat!

Downstairs aint bad with the pool tables.

23 Sep 2005 11:48

Blue Lion, Holborn

Hmmmm, never REALLY had a bad night in this place.

Food is average and the staff are pretty sh*te. No I take that back, the staff are rubbish! And why do they have so much room behind the bar? The place gets PACKED on a Friday night and you can't move whereas behind the bar the staff have enough room to do the ruddy conga!!! SORT IT OUT then I may just like you a bit more.

23 Sep 2005 11:44

The Yorkshire Grey , Holborn

Gone very up its own arse!

When they first reopened they had fit barmaids. Now there is nothing worth going in here for. The food aint up to much and it's waaaaaaay to expensive for my liking.

23 Sep 2005 11:42

The Rugby Tavern, Clerkenwell

Orangiboooooooooooooooooooooooom!!!!!!

Not a bad pub, not a great pub.

Low ceilings, a proper old pub, does exactly what it says on the tin.

23 Sep 2005 11:40

The Puzzle, Clerkenwell

Total gash!!!

Don't like this place at all. FAR too light.

I remember when it was The Old Monk and it was sh*t back then too.

23 Sep 2005 11:37

Printworks, Clerkenwell

Nice and cosy arches which are cool for small groups. Big screens for sport and as a few of us found out the other week, dj on a friday. TOTALLY RANDOM!

Not a bad bar, again a place that i've never had a bad night in.

Cheap beer too what with it being a spoons.

23 Sep 2005 11:36

The Pakenham Arms, Clerkenwell

It's a mans pub!
A proper pub!

Gets a little too smokey late at night but I've never had a bad night in here.

Lacks totty but then what do you expect for a "proper boozer"

Three big screens for sport and a jukebox which you don't see that often now even if it does swallow your money from time to time without playing your songs.

My friend likes to call it the Packenham Inn - GENIUS!!!

23 Sep 2005 11:33

The Apple Tree, Clerkenwell

I'd just like to add that although the landlord is a bit of a jackass the barmaids are lovely and very friendly.

23 Sep 2005 11:31

The Kings Arms, Clerkenwell

Small pub but a proper pub.

Don't go in there that often but it aint bad.

Not really more I can say.

23 Sep 2005 11:29

The Gunmakers, Clerkenwell

KWOLITY food in this place.
Top notch grub.

Really small inside but I like the make shift conservatory out the back even if it does get a little damp when it's wet.

Wouldn't really call it a "pub" though.

23 Sep 2005 11:21

The Eagle, Clerkenwell

Red Stripe on tap!!! SAY NO MORE!!!
Only been in here once. KWOLITY steak burger and when I say steak I mean a big old slab of meat.

Not somewhere I'd go often

23 Sep 2005 11:19

The Duke of York, Clerkenwell

Not bad.
Been there on a few all nighters.
Gets RAMMED with couriers in the evenings.

Don't like Tai food so never eat in here.

Landlady once looked like she wanted to kill us for being a tad too rowdy.

23 Sep 2005 11:17

The Coach and Horses, Clerkenwell

Proper w*nky pub this!
Gastro new media, not enough on the menu and too expensive. Went there once and wont be going back.

23 Sep 2005 11:14

The Apple Tree, Clerkenwell

aaaah the apple tree!
Many a friday night spent drinking in here after work.

Used to be a great pub, pool tables, dart board.

Now the beer is waaaaaaaaaaay too expensive and the landlord is a bit of a knob!

"I'll have a magners please..."
"That'll be 3.90 please"
"3.90!!! How the hell can you charge those prices?"
"Well we are a posh pub."

You can f**k right off!!! Though I must admit I still go there quite often cause it's close.
