The Rising Sun, Reading

Brakspear special the only real beer on when i visited, kept too cold. Quite a dingy place with lots of very sad people trying to hang on to their rebellious teen angst. Set up for the bands seems to be quite good, decent sort of volume for the size. Sound engineer (if there was one) seemed to focus too heavily on the vocals...but that would be my only quibble.

Basically, i hated the place - but may well try and get a gig there in the future.

The Salisbury, Harringay

Spacious and pleasant interior. Nice place for an afternoon drink or two (no more or you'll end up living on the streets at these prices). Fullers pub with remarkably well kept beers (better than any other fullers pub i have been in). Overall not bad at all, though not the sort of place i would really want to visit on a busy evening.

The Oakdale Arms, Harringay

I would weep were the oakdale to be closed down. It must not happen.

The Oakdale Arms, Harringay

the last festival was marvellous and it seems one is being considered for may - i really hope it happens!

The Rifle Volunteers, Maidstone

Myself and some friends came into this (empty) pub on a friday night and were greeted with the words 'are you sure you are in the right place?'. Not the best welcome ever. I guess they think young people don't like good beer. Anyway the imperial stout was tasty but we left soon after the first drink.

The Pilot, Maidstone

Only been here once, on a friday night but not at all busy. The beer was very nice but we wern't made to feel fantastically welcome. Will try it again some day.

The Oakdale Arms, Harringay

I walked nearly 7 miles to get to this pub (too poor for public transport) and was not dissapointed. 8 cask ales on, all very well priced and very drinkable - also a real cider on. Very nice looking, sizeable interior and a jukebox with a lot going for it. I intend to be back for the beer festival the week after next!

The Cove, Covent Garden

I like this pub a lot. Being in covent garden it aint cheap - but they have a pasty bar downstairs, beat that. The steak and guinness pasty was very nice if somewhat expesnive, given the size. The cornish beers are all very nice. Does get PACKED however - all days of the week so i'm told.

The Shakespeare's Head, Holborn

This is the best wetherspoons in the area - and significantly better than the penderals oak which is very close. The beer is well kept and they tend to have a couple of decent guests on often. Fair range of international beers too. Food service is quick - but they often run out of things like burgers- which is a pain. Very big, gets incredibly packed on fridays nights, so i dont go there then. Not a bad place.

The Rising Sun, Tottenham Court Road

Some quite nice beers on - and a student discount. Littl bit dingy, but dinge isnt always bad. Been here a couple of times - would probably return.

The Purple Turtle, Camden

uh...i saw a good band there once - other than that, nothing going for it. Plastic looking place with rubbishy beers served like they are in most clubs.

10 Feb 2005 14:41

The Princess Louise, Holborn

Very well priced beer here - not a massive fan of all the sam smiths beers, but they were not expensive at all. The place looks really nice especially upstairs. I'd consider going back if i was aroudn the area. Toilets are nothing special though...dunno what people are on about.

The Penderel's Oak, Holborn

I've been here a fair number of times and never really enjoyed it. If you order food it takes a long time to get served, some of the staff seem permanently bad tempered (with some noteable exceptions). The beer is worse than in most wetherspoons - which is a shame as they often have quite a few guest ales on which i'd like to try in proper condition. Not a great place.

10 Feb 2005 14:38

The Pakenham Arms, Clerkenwell

When i went they only have one ale on - Adnams broadside - it was kept far too warm and served in a dirt encrusted glass. The place seemed fairly run down. It was a shame because after all these comment i thought it was going to be great. Maybe i just picked a bad day. Dissapointing.

10 Feb 2005 14:34

O'Neills, Euston Road

Like most oneills pubs really - fairly ordinary with big bright special offer signs everywhere. The irish wetherspoons - except not cheap. In fact, pretty damn pricey. Beer well kept though.

10 Feb 2005 14:32

The Marlborough Arms, Tottenham Court Road

Yuck, they keep their beer horribly. Place is fairly average looking inside, rubbish jukebox. Food seems cheap but i've not risked it. I don't intend to go back

10 Feb 2005 14:30

The Jeremy Bentham, Bloomsbury

This pub always has around 4 ales on and they are served to a good standard. Not bad place to go if you are in the area - not a favourite of mine but certainly somewhere i'm likely to go again.

10 Feb 2005 14:28

The Jack Horner, Tottenham Court Road

Uh, its alright! A little expensive compared to fullers pubs nearby but its a nice place to sit and have a drink - the beer is decent quality and the service is good. Definitely worth a visit.

10 Feb 2005 14:27

The Hope and Anchor, Camden

Pool table is good, though the cues are somewhat deformed. A few ales on pump. Not a bad jukebox - could be better. Its conceivable i'd go there again but im not planning to.

10 Feb 2005 14:25

The Southwark Tavern, London Bridge

This pub is alright, nothing vastly special - some pretty decent cask ales on when i visited. Fairly generic pub with lots of trendy types and tourists in - i believe they do a fair amoutn of food too. Would consider going back if i was i the area

10 Feb 2005 14:21

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Good beer! Lots of good beer! Including beer from the local pitfield brewery (and very nice it is too). Definitely worth a visit or six. Place seems nice enough to sit in too, check it out.

4 Feb 2005 11:40

The Doric Arch, Euston

This place sells nice beer. The real ale selection is always changing and interesting. I never find the place a hugley comfortable environment to sit in...not sure why really, but i wouldnt go there for a whole evening. Definitely agree on the Gandalf The Wizard lookalike statement! Also on a few other statements below that will go unmentioned.

4 Feb 2005 11:38

Goose, Bloomsbury

I go to this pub mainly for the very good meal deals that they do. That aside its a fairly average chain pub with variable quality beer and a vast array of delightful mentalists who frequent the establishment.

4 Feb 2005 11:36

The Court, Tottenham Court Road

Yuck, this place is almost as bad as 'The Rocket'. To tier pricing system means that people with a yellow card think they are getting a good deal. The place gets packed with oh so trendy student types swilling cheap lager (no good beer served). Not reccomended.

4 Feb 2005 11:34

The Bunch of Grapes, London Bridge

Nice youngs pub, good place to go if you're gonig to borough market or london bridge. The beer is very good and they have a sizeable range of youngs bottled beers (available to take home too). Prices not bad for the area.

4 Feb 2005 11:33

The Bree Louise, Euston

Not a bad place to go between lectures - not particularly busy during the day and 3 or 4 real ales served. Priced arn't bad, service good, place looks fairly average. Nice.

4 Feb 2005 11:31

The Bloomsbury Tavern, Bloomsbury

Nice pub, smaller than it looks from the outside. Only been once, had a very nice pint of Bishops Finger but sat outside as it was pretty crowded. The place looks nice, service seems decent, beer is good. I think sometimes they have an upstairs open too which would be good.

4 Feb 2005 11:30

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

This pub is great - a little too small for comfort at times, but great. Unfortunately as it is quite busy they do tend to run out of some of their (excellent) St Peter's beers. Only open on weekdays which is fine by me. Usually at least one St Peter's beer on keg too, which is nice. Definitely worth visiting - check out the cream stout and the strong ale. Lovely.

4 Feb 2005 11:27

Mabel's Tavern, Euston

This is the nearest pub to my hall, luckily however it is not full of students, as they all seem to have the impression that if somewhere serves drinkable beer then only 'sad old men' can go there. Fine by me, i hate student pubs. Anyway, the place is nice enough to sit in, decent range of shepherd neame beers, usually some combination of bishops finger, spitfire, master brew and a seasonal beer (the winter porter was fantastic). Prices are a little too high for me to spend too much time there (2.75 for a pint of Spitfire last time i checked). Nice place though, reccomended.

4 Feb 2005 11:25

The Rocket, Euston

I think this pub is an abomination. Being a student myself, i am at a complete loss as to why people actually queue up till midnight to get into this place on a friday night. This pub has NOTHING going for it. Admittedly, on some saturdays it serves its mediocre cheap lager even cheaper - but who cares!?? If that is a student pub, then i refuse to be called a student. To Beth, what is it you think the Rocket serves which is so infinitely better than Carling (which i agree is terrible). Many better pubs in the area tha actually serve nice liquid and arn't fully of 'trendy' idiots.

The Three Greyhounds, Soho

I like the arguments below! My opinion of the place is nothing but good. On both occasions i have visited recently, the beer has been excellent and varied. Prices are not bad at all for the area and the place has a nice (if somewhat artificial?) atmosphere. Good beer, good service - and they serv real ale in pint mugs - can't go wrong!

The Norfolk Arms, Russell Square

I have only been in the place once and was not particularly enthralled by the place. I visited on a thursday or friday night and to my surprise, myself and my friends were the only people there besides one obvious regular and the somewhat onboxious barman.

Upon entering the barman abrasively asked 'what do you want?'. Upon viewing my limited choices i opted for a pint of guinness, which was no of a particularly high calibre. We stayed for the one drink then left - never to return.

4 Feb 2005 01:25

The Euston Flyer, Euston

This is a decent enough pub - quite obviously part of the Fuller's chain. Quality of the fullers beers varies from pretty good to very good. Food seems very expensive. Large Tv screens mean a big crowd of football fans whenever a game is on. Drinks prices are about average for the area.

4 Feb 2005 01:22

The Calthorpe Arms, Holborn

Since posting my previous comment i have been to this pub on a number of other occasions and always been delighted both with the quality of the beer and the service received. The Youngs cask ales are top notch and they have *almost* the full range of bottled beers. The food is good and very reasonably priced. Definitely reccomended.

4 Feb 2005 01:20

Quinn's, Camden

I go to this pub at least once a week, preferably more. I have nothing bad at all to say of the place. The range of beers is extensive, with a sizeable variety of belgian and german beers on offer. For winter, an extra selection of excellent belgian winter beers were made available. The prices beat anywhere else i have seen in central london at 3 for the belgians and 3.10 for the germans. However the wonderful beer is not all the place is great for - the Quinn family who run the place are an entertaining and amiable bunch who always do their best to make sure you are well served and enjoy your time in the pub. I could not reccomend this place more. It is excellent.

The Calthorpe Arms, Holborn

Cool pub, full range of youngs bottled beers, 3 or 4 on tap. Very nice place indeed.

Ye Olde Thirsty Pig, Maidstone

Amazing small local pub, winding passage ways, pool table, excellent jukebox, good selection of bottled ales - really cool staff
