The Spitfire, West Malling

Went here for the first time today with my disabled wife in a wheelchair. For a newish building (2001 I think) very badly designed. Mostly raised areas with no wheelchair access. No wheelchair accessible toilet that I could see.
Four pumps but only one working was Spitfire Golden.Ale. Sorry to those who like this tipple, but I have tasted better mouthwash and left most of mine.
Food was reasonable but not good. I had sausage on bubble and squeak. But B&S did not have any cabbage or greens in it. (Is that Bubble or Squeak missing?) Sausages were nice. My wife had a very nice steak ale pie, but it came with cabbage so tough it should not be eaten.
Normal pub prices for the area.
Good point, the service was polite and friendly.
Piped music was too loud for a pub selling main meals, more suited to a kids pub at night.
This was a visit about 13.00hrs, no idea what it is like at night.

The Queen's Head, Nutfield

Went here lunchtime for the first time.
Warm welcome from staff.
Very clean.
Excellent choice of food. and good quantity and quality.
Two very sexy ladies serving at the bar. (sexist but true)
Only down side was a very limited and dull choice of cask ale. Harvey's, Spitfire and their own Queens Head Ale, but that is only 3.2%

The Rose and Crown, Halstead

Good selection of beers, normally about 6.
First class food and plenty of it.
Friendly bar staff and locals.
Only down side is do not depend on roast advertised for Wednesdays, often not on, but a good choice of other meals.
Sunday roast is excellent.
Parking is limited.

The Cock, Ide Hill

I had a meal here about a month ago. Warm welcome and reasonable beer. The food was first class. Went there for Sunday roast today. Welcome was still good, beer, Greene King, food though awful. Meat tough as old boots, roast spuds more like mash and tough greens. Chef asked how the meal was and was told about the meat. But not given a penny off or apology. So my last visit there. Can only assume they have changed chefs. A real, and expensive disappointment.

Crown Point Inn, Seal

Went here for the first time today. One person in our party was in a wheelchair. 1st no disable parking, but not a big problem. Then two lots of stairs to carry the wheelchair down, not good, third, none of us like rare meat and that was what was on offer, so we left. Can't comment on the beer. The waitress was polite and tried to help but don't go here with anyone in a wheelchair!

Kings Arms, Shoreham

I have had a few meals here over the past couple of years. Always a warm friendly welcome. Best pub grub I have had in Kent and plenty of it fairly priced. Specials board changed regularly so a good choice of food from there and the main menu.
Limited choice of beer. Greene King or Abbott.
My comments relate to lunch time only as I have never been there at night. But for a midday pint or meal I would highly recommend this pub. Only down side is parking is very limited.

The Kings Arms, Leaves Green

Went to this pub for the first time midday today for a meal with my wife. First impressions, a nicely laid out pub, plenty of character. Couple of local (Westerham) beers and a Timothy Taylor one on tap in the bar we were in.
The menu was a big surprise! Much larger choice of meals than expected for a country pub. Better than many restaurants.
We went for the steak and kidney pudding, mash and veg.
From previous experience of pubs in this area, I expected a tiny pub with little meat. Instant mash and not much veg. What a lovely surprise when the meal came up! Massive puds crammed full of meat. Some of the best home made mash I have tasted and a wide variety of veg, far more than we could eat. For average pub prices this was a feast indeed.
I had a pint if Westerham British Bulldog. Without a doubt, best pint I have had in west Kent!
I was a little dubious of trying this pub, but am very glad I did. Certainly we will be going back again. I do not know about night time, but, apart from one person with a mobile, which you get everywhere now, it was a nice quiet environment with plesant piped music. Top rating from me.

The Rose and Crown, Halstead

"Seems likely that "Somerstown" (review below) had the wrong glasses more likely"

Honest criticism not welcome then? I gave praise where it was deserved. Also said I had only been here once, but if the quantity of food was normal for this pub, there are very few locally that dish up less. Hopefully it was just an off day.

The Bull, Horton Kirby

Excellent pub! Great choice of cask ales, good food and plenty of it. Nice welcome from locals even though it was my first time there. Highly recommended!!

The Olde George Inn, Shoreham

Subjective perhaps, but 3.7 is not strong ale to me. Harveys is standard in many pubs, just like London Pride or Spitfire, a reasonable beer but nothing special. T.E.A. I tried and did not think much of it.
Screaming kids is what was there on my visit and I reported what I found. Food was good and in quieter surroundings I would try it again.

The Stanhope Arms, Brasted

Choice of three decent cask ales.
Excellent meal and plenty of food.
Gorgeous blond barmaid (Landlady?)
Excellent polite service.
Snooty locals. (But I am not proud, I will speak to anyone, so said "hallo" to them!)
Well worth going to for a pint or a meal. I will be back there again.

The Lion Hotel, Farningham

Waited ages for food. Big looking pie was served up in a brown bowl. Took the top off and played "Find the meat" without success! Unless you like slow service and cr*p food avoid this dump!

The Gamecock, West Kingsdown

Used to be a decent pub for real ale and nice food, but I visited the first time for a couple of years the other week and it has changed. Courage Best and Directors were the only beer. Food in the chiller behind the bar was ancient looking sausages and dried up curry!
No food and only a half for me! I will not be returning here.

Rising Sun, Twitton

I thought I would stop for a pint and a meal there today. Pulled up at 1pm. Cars were parked outside, but doors locked! Don't know if that is because it is shut down, just doesn't open on a Monday, or to prevent non locals gaining entry?
Can't rate it as I had to go elsewhere. If it is still open can someone else please post and tell me and I will try it again? (Its not too close to where I live and don't want another wasted journey!)

The Rose and Crown, Halstead

Having read good reviews of this pub here, I thought I would try it. Certainly they sell a nice pint and the locals were friendly. The food was well cooked, but I must have picked the wrong day The portions were so small I would have been better off getting a saveloy and chips on my way home!
I might try it again, but will have a pint first and see what they dish up for other people to see if my experience was unusual.
Nice pub if just out for a drink I would think.

Bull Inn, Brasted

Beer was excellent.
Locals friendly.
Very limited menu unless you want all day breakfast or jacket spuds.
Don't start Sunday roast till 1pm, so don't turn up at 12.30 as I did! (and went somewhere for better food)

Two Brewers, Shoreham

Only been in here once, that was last week.
Barmaid was chatty.
Food was plentiful and about the same price as others at Shoreham.
Beer was limited to Green King IPA or Spitfire.
Garden area was a pit.
Bar was clean.
Only problem really was that the barmaid had to go upstairs with the food order come down, go upstairs to collect the food and bring it down (I was eating in the bar, as were most folk. Restaurant upstairs) Dirty crockery to be taken upstairs by her. She was working hard, but there was a long wait to get a drink often.
Locals were friendly.
Can only say how I found it, and would rate it second best in Shoreham, with Crown, for excellent food and beer, first, the other two tie last. One coats food in MSG, the other has screaming kids in it. (But good food) Neither had any thing special in the way of ales. (Both had small brewery bitter, but going by the taste, must be the cheapest)
I will visit th Two Brewers again and see if it stays the same.

The Woodman, Otford

New people running it now. (August 2009). Friendly staff. Average beer, just Harveys or London Pride. Good food.
Okay for a meal, but I would not go there for an evening out drinking.

10 Aug 2009 19:57

The Four Lymes, Hawley

A dive. Depending on which chef you get, either excellent food or half cooked MSG covered Cr**!
Only got 2 points because it sells Adnams beer.

10 Aug 2009 19:45

The Crown, Shoreham

I eat and drink there often. Excellent meals. Polite welcoming service and good beer, only pity is there is not a bit more choice of ales. Lots of character. The best I have found of Shoreham's four pubs.

10 Aug 2009 19:27

The Olde George Inn, Shoreham

Good points?
Clean. Polite service. Good food and plenty of it.
Bad points?
Indifferent beer if you like strong ale.
No character.
If you sit outside you better enjoy kids shouting at the top of their voices, because it happened when I was recently there right through our meal, so not a place for a quiet meal with a friend!
